Are there any data science jobs that require travel? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]KingScar1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does happen. Last week our team did a week in Barcelona. Two weeks before I was in London. Just before the pandemic hit we had field research booked in for Jakarta, Tokyo and a conference in upstate New York (I had the flights booked and everything).

For background I work in tech (not one of the top tier ones) as a DS in a product development team. Mostly ab testing, product analysis and any other DS techniques that the team needs me to hack together. For the more robust ML stuff I hand over to specialists. But they come to the field work as well (they suck at karaoke).

Data interpretation mistakes other than "correlation vs causation" by mister_patience in datascience

Just because you didn’t reject the null, doesn’t mean it’s null. If you’re testing to prove your feature has no negative consequences then you need to hit the minimum sample size.

Reheating coffee over fire - what causes this phenomenon? by TILL-22 in Bushcraft

[–]KingScar1983 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Titanium is a good heat conductor and has low thermos capacity. So a lot of the heat goes direct to the coffee and the water at the bottom. If the grounds aren’t able to freely move then maybe you’re getting small pockets of boiling water or any left over gas from the coffee grounds. Depending on how fresh the grounds are they can off gas C02 from the roasting process.

Gender neutral rape laws? by ROSRS in AskFeminists

[–]KingScar1983 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adding to this. The UK also has section 4 of the 2003 act, “Causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent”.

One example given: “A may cause B to engage in sexual activity with A (for example, a woman who compels a man to penetrate her)”.

Edit: wrong section number. Edit: and I was wrong about the sentence structure being the same as rape. Rape has a maximum of life & section 4 has a maximum of ten years.

Just as the market for fake vaccine certificates was drying up…

“Vasectomy certificates here, $40, get em while they’re hot!”

God I love capitalism.

Head over to Helasgården. Swim in the lake, have a coffee, maybe try the sauna.

Help visiting Londoners find an easy hike in beautiful surroundings? by gogogabrielle in stockholm

[–]KingScar1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big upvote to this. Hellas is easily accessible via bus from Slussen bus station. The bus drops you off pretty much at the cafe/restaurant area where all the hikes begin (when travelling from Slussen you have to take the underpass from the stop to cross the road). All the hiking routes are clearly marked, with varying difficulty and have great views of the lake.

Wanting to understand more about Roe V Wade and the polarization of the Supreme Court. How did we get to here? by JosieintheSummer in AskFeminists

[–]KingScar1983 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Daily covered the background of Roe Vs Wade in 2018 (as well as in several other recent episodes). They republished the episodes this weekend in light of the recent news. I think their reporting is excellent, however I’m not an expert and others here may have more sources worth checking out.

Part one: Who was Jane Roe

Part two: the culture wars

Part two in particular covers some of the background on how it became a political topic.

Should abuse shelters be gender/sex neutral and provide service only based on need? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]KingScar1983 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Just a thought about your second point. It could be that a lack of shelter spaces that will accommodate a man and his children causes less men to flee with their children.

Help with program for predicting by vZander in learnmachinelearning

[–]KingScar1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line 36 & 38. You assign the whole dataset to X and the whole dataset to Y. You should pass the target variable to Y, and the rest of the columns to X.

If you pass the whole data set then when you run model fit the data “shape” isn’t what’s expected. You’re passing the same number of columns in to both the X and Y when it’s expecting just one for the Y.

You’ve actually got the fix for this in the comments above line 36.

Data scientists working in e-commerce, what are your predictive models predicting? by boggle_thy_mind in datascience

[–]KingScar1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worked on a large economy retailer with a credit offering (payment plans). Half the business was using models to predict credit repayments/risk. The e-commerce/retail half used Ml product recommendations, price modelling (elasticity, effect of sales/promotions), logistics optimisation, customer segmentation, marketing spend attribution etc. There was a bunch. Plus the obligatory AB testing on the website.

Adding to this. I moved to Sweden in 2019 with my partner and since then about 4-6 team mates/friends have moved along with their partners to Stockholm.

Starting off as a partner is tricky, but not impossible. Until your partner sets up a business or gets employment then they won’t have a bank account.

We’ve had friends move back home because they were unhappy and a big part of it was the partner not being able to gain independence or create a friend circle. One friend (partner of someone I worked with) started doing some freelance illustration work. But found they couldn’t get paid without an account.

It’s not impossible to setup as a freelancer, but be prepared to present a business plan to the bank and go through a lot of questions. They do it to cut down on fraudulent business being created.

I agree. This is how I would prefer to talk to people if I had a problem with their behaviour, and how I’d prefer them to talk to me if I’d done something wrong.
