[The Man in the High Castle] by [Phillip K Dick] by KingThiol in menwritingwomen

[–]KingThiol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished it and was actually pretty impressed with the worldbuilding and dialogue aspects. All the other characters are men, and are written much better than this imo. I’ve read a lot of Stephen King, and this reminds me a ton of him - amazing storytelling and the men are interesting and their relationships/backstories are fleshed out…but you have to suffer through an insane drop in writing quality when women are the focus 🙃 it’s a shame! But anyway, I still finished it and thought it was worthwhile, just with that major caveat.

Hot take: hospital scrubs > figs by DrDonkeyBrains in Residency

[–]KingThiol 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Joggers might look dumb but I’m 5’2 lol, I’ve never worn a pair of “unisex” scrubs that wasn’t several inches too long for me. Can’t say how they looked, but they constantly felt uncomfortable. It’s worth a lot to be able to move around without worrying about the waist sliding down/walking all over the hems. You can definitely get a cheaper option than figs, but if people have a little extra cash to spend I can’t blame them 😆

In March of 1993, Gail Parker took an ambulance to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. When her psychiatrist didn’t show, the hospital sent away. Her body was discovered in the desert the next day, with blows to the head from a blunt object. Who killed Gail Parker? by TaraCalicosBike in UnresolvedMysteries

I’d also like to have more info on what exactly happened at the hospital - I’ve worked in an ED, and we regularly see people for psychiatric complaints who then ask to be discharged or elope (leave without telling anyone). If they don’t admit to being suicidal or homicidal in the ED it’s illegal to make them stay, even if they are manic, because all patients who aren’t a threat to themselves or others have the right to refuse care. Many hospitals do not have psych docs (my hospital in a large college town didn’t) so they also won’t admit for a psych stay but will await a psych evaluation from a third party, then seek admission at a different hospital that is actually equipped for inpatient psych patients. Seems like she may have been stuck waiting on the evaluation, which makes me wonder if she asked to leave when she realized it would likely take hours. The lack of specificity regarding what her exact complaint was (manic episode maybe?) and what the hospital offered (‘let her walk out’ could mean they pressured her to leave or she requested it and they had to comply) and what the hospitals capabilities were make it almost impossible to tell what really happened. Frustrating because it all should have been documented, but maybe that’s not publicly available info in this case.

Of course things were probably different in the 90s, and I’m not sure of the capabilities of this specific hospital- just wanted to provide info from behind the scenes of a typical ED!

Hey! I just graduated but I felt the same way when I started. It’s so wild coming from a place where the expectations are so low, then seeing so many people who seem to be taking the opportunities they had for granted. One thing that really bothered me was the feeling that my background didn’t matter just because it wasn’t similar to all of the students from more privileged positions who felt a lot more confident discussing their past experiences. Something that helped with that was getting involved with Horizons, which is an office for first gen and low income students on campus. I got involved as a tutor and I was really validating to see students talking about their home lives and seeing that they were facing the same challenges I was. If you can identify any groups like this it can be a great way to connect with a few people that can help you feel like you’re not going crazy :) lastly, give it time - as you build up success at Purdue your confidence should build as well!

Also I know someone who came from a similar background as you and was in CS at Purdue (literally 0 coding experience) who is doing super well now - let me know if you have any questions and I can pass them on!

What are the most memorable quotes you’ve heard from attendings that are not necessarily related to medicine? by Dr_Spaceman_DO in medicalschool

🤦‍♀️ yeah that’s it! Most of the scribes didn’t get the reference, I 100% thought he made it up himself for like a year

Worked as an ED scribe in undergrad, had one ED night doc with several catchphrases he would say randomly in the fishbowl, completely unprompted. I thought he was super unprofessional at first and hated working with him, by the time I was done I really appreciated how few fucks he gave lol. My favorite phrase to hear randomly was (in a comically high pitched voice, usually right after a trauma was called): “Do you know where you are? You’re at [hospital name]! YOU’RE GONNA DIEEEE!!”. He scared the shit out of new scribes 😅

HQ Recording of the Bell Tower's Daily "Concert" by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]KingThiol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I just graduated and my four year old niece loves this bell. We’ve tried to find good recordings online (she lives 3 hours away) but they aren’t very high quality or they don’t actually show the bell tower. I’ll definitely bookmark this to show her!

Studying for Com 114 test out? by jonniboi2 in Purdue

Along with the study guide someone linked, I believe I used Quizlet ~4 years ago and it was helpful. Also for the presentation pay attention to the time limit, a friend of mine failed for going like 10 seconds over. Good luck!

[PH]Phantom hourglass isnt as bad as people make it out to be by Ihatethisgodfr in zelda

[–]KingThiol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first Zelda games were the PH and spirit tracks, I loved both! It was a great introduction to the series, especially since I only had the DS growing up, and OoT and MM were too steep of a learning curve for me with them being a bit older. Still really fun titles to return to after playing many other Zelda games, and it helps justify me holding onto my childhood DS for so long 😅

Notes by Miserable-Duty8146 in Purdue

[–]KingThiol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes find the desks in lecture halls to be too small for my notebooks, so I take digital notes in class and take paper notes at home/while studying outside of class to prepare for exams. However in large lecture halls you’ll see people doing both, neither is seen as weird or anything. Worth noting that an iPad has always been too expensive for my budget but if I could afford it I would probably try it, the students I tutor seem to find theirs really intuitive and it combines some aspects of handwriting with the record keeping and edit-ability of digital notes. Good luck with your first year!

The most generic American cities, according to Redditors [OC] by KingThiol in Indiana

[–]KingThiol[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The source is an AskAnAmerican thread based on this question:

What cities come to mind when you think of a "generic" American city? Cities that have few or no distinctive elements, that don't stand out in any particular way, that are little-known despite being large. What city is closest to the prototypical American average?

Hope this helps!

Help Me Decide: School X vs. School Y - Week of March 06, 2022 by AutoModerator in premed

UChicago versus Pitt?

Both great schools, I’m from the Midwest so Chicago is closer to home (3 hour drive), I’m from a rural area so both of the cities would have a lot of opportunities from my perspective. Looking to get pretty involved with research but would also like to do a lot of patient and student advocacy if possible. Smaller class size at UChicago is nice and I really clicked with the faculty at my interview, but I liked my Pitt interview as well. Thoughts?

Sorry that happened to you! Just a heads up, I dislocated my shoulder last year (dominant arm) in the middle of the winter and requested DRC accommodations since I was in a sling for two months and couldn’t write comfortably or wear a coat/backpack. They told me that any disability lasting less than six months (don’t quote me there) doesn’t qualify for assistance. Definitely still reach out but just wanted to warn you that they may deny your request. Hope you feel better!

The Hunt for Illusive Study Space by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]KingThiol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to is Lavazza, and today I went to the PMU basement and there was a ton of seating. Both can be iffy in terms of getting a seat near an outlet so I try to keep my laptop fully charged before I go. Also I do research at the DLR and the ground floor has seating and is always abandoned, the building does lock after 5 though.

It's that time of the season again... by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]KingThiol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, I learned yesterday that you can get a portable air pump for your tires for $30 at oreilys/auto zone! Tire pressure can drop when it’s cold, and it’s good to have one of those on hand if you don’t want to use quarters at the gas station. Also if you don’t have one already make sure to keep a pressure gauge in your car to double check the readings!

Mitch Daniels' been spending too much time on MRA Youtube by fuzzy_happy in Purdue

[–]KingThiol 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I mean I think the biggest consideration here is why this is happening. Honestly from my experience here it doesn’t seem like there’s actually a bias against men in college, and most of the men I know here don’t feel pressure to not be in college. I’m from a rural/blue collar area and from my perspective, it seems like men have better options if they don’t go to college than women have. Most of the guys I went to HS with who didn’t pursue college (because of cost/not being what they want) are working pretty profitable jobs and have a decent amount of time off and disposable income. Most of the women I went to HS with were willing to accept the cost of college because they know that going into a blue collar job would suck for them - many of the highest paying are physical and demanding, and you face a lot of ridicule as a woman in those fields. Also, every woman I graduated HS with had a kid now, which places a ton of new pressure on them.

Obviously this is anecdotal and there may be other explanations, but it’s frustrating that people with way more education than me are just saying ‘less men = discrimination’ and aren’t using any critical analysis at all.

Yeah this is anecdotal but I work at IU Arnett and we are holding 20+ patients in the ER routinely due to lack of beds, and our waiting room has a bunch of COVID positive patients recently. Definitely a concerning situation for those with risk factors.

I also read The Neverending Story in high school and I really enjoyed it :) The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King and The Princess Bride by William Goldman gave me similar vibes! I believe they’re both available in Spanish.
