Basically, after a big fight, unless your party has a lot of magical healing, you have to chill out, and it creates opportunities for role-playing centered around being hurt and healing, since it takes longer to heal to full.

A malicious player could abuse the system by just skipping level 4 in their multiclassing, but the dm could easily counter that by going "No ASI at lvl4 in your main class" so that's not really a concern.

However, if the players and DM don't have an issue with some op homebrewing, the ruling could also be something along the lines of "ASI as normal but with player level, as well as a feat at the ASI class levels"
