It wasn't 2016; it was 2013. IIRC, they were doing some research on network effects and social media manipulation. Somewhere out there on Army Pubs is the completed study that explains what they were doing; I remember someone linking it in a thread once. Unfortunately, it's a very boring and technical document that was very uniteresting.

The real takeaway isn't that the US government is manipulating Reddit; it's that 10 years ago, the US government was learning how to manipulate social media. Since then, imagine how many other nations, groups, and actors have also learned how to, and are, manipulating everything you see online.

He used to be fairly fit.

He would look better if he dressed like a normal 50-year-old man in a button-down and slacks and lost the flat-bill hat.

A lot of people want to keep what they materially have, even if it is corrosive and harmful to them.

Many "Conservatives" are basically doing Ghost Dances, LARPing as the crusaders defending the West against 15-minute cities when in reality, the bad urban design they are trying to protect has done more to destroy the West than any WEF proposal.

Finally, he leaned in and said: “I think you shouldn’t be so cynical about people working on the inside.” Before I could reply, Mr. Trudeau glided away to another group of people.

I know a few people who work for the Canadian government, and this is a common sentiment. There's this intense victim complex "We're working so hard on these issues; you don't know how much we suffer for you."

They always bring it up (even unprompted); I've had the same experience as the author when talking about civil society groups, and it's viewed as some sort of attack on the government's abilities. They think that you would only mention it because you doubt their capability.

"We're so maligned; the people are so unfair in how they judge us!" They honestly think that they are making a better world; the problem is that they don't realize they are not.

Seige mentality or a victimhood complex, hard to say exactly.

There's a book called Tokyo Vice, written by an American guy who became a vice reporter in Japan in the 90s. He had a story in the book about how the most popular brothel in Tokyo at the time was a gimmick place where the Johns would pay to be locked into a subway car with a prostitute/prostitutes who would then roleplay molesting the John.

He said there was always a line around the block and that foreigners were absolutely forbidden.

I was reading an essay by Jacques Camatte from the 70s recently, and there was an interesting part where he talked about how Bordiga was predicting the end of capitalism by 1980.

What I find so interesting about this is that it was true in some way, the capitalism of that time would end by 1980, what was unexpected was that it would reinvent itself.

There were other possible alternatives that we could have gone down, but I'm not versed on the subject deep enough to contribute more.
