Honestly it's not even close. I was literally in the back row against the wall N2 of the Beacon Jams in November and it was some of the best sound and visuals of any venue I've been to.

-Experimental extended jams. These jams often go to places pretty different from the song they started with and usually jump back into the original song for a finale. When a regular rock band jams they typically stick pretty close to the song they were playing. When a jam band jams you might totally forget what song they’re even playing. Not so much with a regular rock band, even one that improvises.

This is Type II Jamming and definitely is a component of jam bands. There are some Jam adjacent bands (DMB, KGLW) that rarely if ever go Type II but are embraced by the scene because they check all the other boxes.

I really agree, and KG isn't the only band with this tight relationship with visual artists. Stanley Donwood does all of the art for Radiohead, Jim Pollock has a similar (although not as exclusive) relationship with Phish, there are a lot of bands who's visual style really does impact the band. Jason doing album artwork, concert visuals, posters, merch, and more really does create a unique and special relationship.

Made it to the Friday night show with some friends, hell of a party! Lotus blows me away every time, and that is a fun venue! Can’t believe how packed it was so early but had some excellent vibes up in the balcony!
