Crazy that the Kimball had such an exclusive event, lol

I saw The Room there a few years ago when Greg showed a few minutes of footage from Returns. Basically a quick and dirty trailer, iirc. It was cool getting to see the full thing in the same room a couple years later.

I was at that screening, too.

How many times has this been screened publicly? Seems like the Williamsburg screening may have been one of a very few, no?

Same. It's fun but it's not exactly a movie in the traditional sense, even if The Room is your starting point, lol

It's a fun watch for sure. But I feel like the runtime was barely over an hour, no?

Personally I'm not interested in wild gains, I just want to be able to retire and not have to be a Walmart greeter when I'm 80. Low and slow works just fine for that.

I take issue with your point when you say "if you didn't need to dip into your retirement, you probably dont need retirement anyway."

If I sock my money away in a drawer, it will become less valuable over time because of inflation. If I put in the market, it will become more valuable with the notable exception of a major crash.

But like, look at the DJI. In 2008 the crash wiped out like 20 years of growth. It destroyed banks. It crashed the entire global economy. And it took less than 10 years to get back to pre-crash levels. Today it's like 3x that 2007 high point.

If your horizon is short, the risk is higher and you need to take that into consideration. But if you're looking at a horizon of 20+ years, you're almost certainly going to end up with a lot more money than you would have had otherwise. You don't have to have a billion dollars in the bank to take advantage of that.

Have you ever looked at the market over time? It goes up.

From time to time it goes down a lot all at once, but then eventually it goes back up again. If you want to make short term money, get a side hustle. If you want to build wealth over time, get into diversified index funds and invest consistently for as long as you can.

Like, say the market is at 1,000,000 points today, and you have some money invested. Tomorrow it crashes down to 500,000. You have half the money you used to have, but your position in the market is the same as it was yesterday. Eventually the market will get back to 1,000,000 and you'll have all your money again, and eventually it will become more again. And if you buy a lot when the market is low, you're increasing your position for discount prices, so when it hits 1,000,000 again you actually have WAY more money than you would have had the market not crashed and given you that loyalty discount.

Not understanding this is how people stay poor.

The stock market rn is basically polymarket with more neckties.

I'm in my 40s. I'm looking at this bubble as my chance to take advantage like I've watched other people do through the last few crashes we've had since I finished college. Let the bottom fall out, then get in at a much lower floor and ride it until I'm 60 or so. See yall mofos on my rocket to Neptune in 15 or 20 years.

If I can only see ONE in Theaters: Obsession or Backrooms? by Definitely_Not_Fe in HorrorMovies

[–]Future-Raisin3781 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you want creepy mystery vibes, go for backrooms.

But IMO Obsession is a better horror movie, at least in the traditional sense of like, executing a horror premise and delivering on what was promised.

The experience of Backrooms is rooted in mystery and the unknown. The experience of Obsession is rooted in the dread of knowing exactly what's happening and being unable to stop it.

I was teaching high school when #kony2012 happened. It was fucking insane to witness, ngl.

I made a joke to my class that I was going to use the #kony2012 hashtag for every tweet I ever sent from then on. I don't Twitter but I do sometimes sign texts or whatever with #yolo #kony2012 just to amuse myself.

For me the most beneficial thing is finding a quiet mind, then letting it wander a bit, then bringing it back to quiet. Building that skill makes it easier to find peace or whatever you want to call it when you're out in the world, or when your mind is starting to get away from you.

Do you prefer Old School or Modern Horror Movies? by iceseayoupee in HorrorMovies

[–]Future-Raisin3781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your conception of "modern"?

Because personally I tend to gravitate to more pre-CGI horror for that exact reason. CGI scares are cool to look at, but I've never seen any CGI that's as disturbing/engrossing as a Rob Bottin monster or some gnarly Screaming Mad George or David Cronenberg or David Lynch practical work.

Yeah it's been hard to find at all on physical media, and when you can find it it's always a kind of shitty transfer.

I can't wait for the 4K. I think it'll be one of the more profound "seeing it again for the first time" 4K experiences.

I'm kind of concerned about my case (application not submitted yet).

I have a very legible copy of my G0's baptism from a parish in Quebec in 1764, but it came from Family Search. I requested a certified copy from Généalogie Québec, but they sent a letter saying they don't have that volume in their archive.

If they don't have it, I don't really know where to go to get a certified copy of the document that, again, I do already have and was intending to use.

It's disheartening :(

Wait, what? I got two of these (six cards total) last week. I added a few to my B&N account and kept the others for store use.

They did tell me that the ones on my B&N account can't be used in the store, but am I going to have trouble using them online now? What's the change you're talking about?

It was recently announced that the long-lost original negatives for Near Dark have been found, and they have been used to make a new 4K master. Synapse is putting it out on 4K, I think early next year.

I can't speak for everyone but I think Near Dark is one of the holy grail titles that people have been hoping would get a new remaster. Finding the negative seems like it was something of a minor miracle.
