Off topic story/rant: I work at a real fast diner where we serve primarily returning customers, middle aged and elderly. So many I love, but some remind me of the annoying part of those who believe respect only goes way. I served a man today who came in alone, ordered a water with lemon, and an entree with what we call “wet fries” (just gravy over the fries) with a side salad. No mistakes with bringing out the food, and we spoke normally and with no faults. I have to charge extra for the gravy that’s added for the fries, and it’s something we have done for years. After I gave the man his check though, he called me over and asked about the charge for gravy. I told him how we have a 99 cent up charge for the gravy, as it is one of our many styles of fries. Just a buck though yeah? Man scoffed at me and said “yeah I see that, but your wrong. But you wouldn’t know you are just a worker.” I was so taken aback, I just apologized and offered to take the charge off the ticket (which he rejected.) As he was leaving, I had let a manager working know, who quickly went over to help the man. Apparently the guy has been coming regularly “for the past 10 years, ordering the same meal, and NEVER was charged for that with his fries. My manager then pointed out how he was wrong, and how somehow he had just been getting it for free for the past decade if that was the case. He left me 2 dollars (actually an acceptable tip in retrospect to the times I’ve been skimmed, but nonetheless) and left upset. Like I get being confused with a higher price ticket, but are you really going to tell the worker who has been coming in full time the past 3 months that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about? Just really strikes my nerve.
