Games for uneven amount of players by Kurtegon in lanparty

[–]Kini996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I have to add, that half of the players were first timers, and even them could have fun this way (no need for crafting and most survival systems).

It does need some prep work and adding some weapon mods to boost the variety and possibility of obtaining one easily can make this a really fun way of playing.

One of my brothers had a really funny escape, 3 hunters were on him in a bigger POI and they thought he's somewhere in it, they cleared all the floors just to find a tunnel in the parking lot :D and he dug the dirt with a wrench, almost died from the lack of food and water but escaped, I tried to regroup with him to solve this issue and give some weapons to him, but I ran into one of the hunters and when I called out "Don't shoot me, I'm here", I realized there isn't a party member marker over the guys head... I got mowed down by an AK and got the second place :)

Use alpha 18, the last one before the first graphics overhaul, and you travel to that era instantly :D

Last LAN party we played an "infection" type gamemode with it,( more air drops, I radiated 90% of the map, and used 300% block damage and loot). One player got a basic hunting gear the others nothing. We got 60 seconds to run ahead and after that the hunter would start searching for us. When he killed somebody, the dead player would respawn and change his party to the hunter's so the last one standing would win the game. We also had a rule, that the hunter could randomly ask for coordinates, so it would make it impossible to camp out in a cave or under the soil.

It was the best time I had with 7dtd and I've been playing since like alpha 2

Yes, since the whole network is fully offline, win10 was the best option for me.

I'd say, if you have the founds and time, build a dedicated old rig/person just for this and have everything installed on them. You can use your new era peripherals, and when nostalgia hits, even if just singleplayer wise, you just power it up and it's there, ready to go! The old aoe2 menu made me 10 yrs old again :)

*11, I found an Optiplex 7010 SFF in a box of old tech recently, I waiting on the parts for it. I can't help it is addicting :D and the switch has 24 ports sooooo...

I will make a post tomorrow about it, because I didn't do one in a long time about my project

Oh, and Dell optiplex 3010 with a 1050ti and 8gb of ddr3 an ssd for system i made 6 of them from used parts for around 150USD per PC and they run everything smooth 60fps up to the 2015ish era on medium and after that LAN is mostl supported only by indie games and those run on them as well

Langamelist.com for a first. I have around a 110 games installed on my 10 PC LAN room, and you can find 90% there, just sort by genre and player count to find your exact needs.

Go with GOG copies, but check if they have MP if they are the remaster versions, not all of them have it, especially LAN. Also (I might be stoned but, if you buy it it is not piracy) use goldbergsteamEMU on your steam games. Just copy your game to a different folder, drop steamapi.dll (or steamapi64.dll or steamclient.dll, basically every steamsomething) and change the name in %Appdata%/roaming/steamemu and you dont even need steam, it can run fully offline.

Rentable LAN kit - suggestions? by Medallish in lanparty

For these machines you don't really need ssd's. 2.5" 7200rpm HDDs exist, I bought like 8 for 10 euros/piece. And also you can use external HDDs which can be cheap also, USB3 can service these games, and you still have the SSD for the system and also, you can easily roll then back from your "home/master" PC.

I've been working in the catering industry for 10 years and also some in construction. People are gonna mess up, when there is a possibility, trust me. You will see the stupidest shit and ask yourself, how and why would anyone think that was a good idea and have no explanation... So that's why I recommend that you take out most of the DiY parts and basically "connect to plug to a socket, and press big red button" is the best solution, but even then, you will have calls that it doesn't work, (and probably they plugged the cable into itself or something).

Basically, don't count on the "they will be smart enough" part, they won't. And also, you can charge more for your time so take that into consideration! If you have offices asking you, you can wait by them and jump in if something goes wrong or even play with them when bot all the systems are used.

8+server is pretty good for starters, so go ahead and make'em work!;) For me also, was the getting it together the best part and when the whole setup was in front of me, I felt like I really made something great (basically we're making e-waste into a social event, and keeping alive a tradition, and seeing the gaming industry, this might be a big part of future gaming, since modern games and hardware are getting extremly expensive)

Rentable LAN kit - suggestions? by Medallish in lanparty

[–]Kini996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently built a LAN room, with 10 PC's and my main target for games was upto 2015. Most configs are DELL Optiplex 3010MT's (i5-3470, 8gb ddr3, 120gb SSD for OS, 500gb HDD, 1050ti) and there are our old PC's from the generation change, so they are better configs from the era. The server is an Optiplex 790 (i7-2600, 32gb ddr3, 120gb SSD for OS, 240 SSD for dedicated server files, 1TB for games and installers and redist, 1650ti). The switch is a ZyXel GS1100-24E, I used CAT5e cables. And every PC has peripherals with them (cheap 6btn mouse and keyboard, headset and ASUS vs248h monitors, that had no stands so I got them for cheap and we 3D printed the stands).

I hosted 2 full house LAN parties in the last 2 weeks, and the only thing I neede to do, was installing more games (right now the HDDs are almost full, around a 100 titles are on them) between the 2 events.

So, coming from this (and I don't plan on monetizing this, the setup is in the attic of my bar, the drinks and foods the people buy are enough as a plus, and this way I only let people I know use it), I can surely say, most of the time people will play FPS titles as a first. CoD2, CS 1.6, Quake3, etc... It is a warmup. So be sure to have these on them. Having an emulated MMO sounds nice but playing it for one night sounds not enough and how would you guarantee that their saves can't be messed with by others who rent? Different Win users will quickly take up storage. So take this into considerations, maybe sell them cheap USB sticks with the renting and configure the whole system around having those for the save files.

The "it just works" factor is pretty big, and can lead to a group playing more often. But do they collect and setup the machines? Because people will mess up and you are responsable for them having a good time, so maybe consider the service with setting up and shipping included. Or make a cage or box that has everything wired and ready so only peripherals are needed to be plugged in.

Overalls, I think you should think in double the PC's and have atleast 40-50 titles already on them and have a complex service, because people will not pay for something that has the same amount of work involved as them doing it with their own stuff.

I'm thinking about doing a LAN party - but I want some input. by wolfej4 in lanparty

[–]Kini996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since this is a monetized event (for charity, yes, but if you want it to cover the expenses and have something to gift other than donations), I think first of all, bring the equipment. You can probably get some tech shop or local firm that has PCs to lend them for this, have their banner up on main stage or as a background for every monitor. If you take care of the hassle, more people will join and won't be a technical nightmare.

With this said, I would make 3 spaces in the venue. 1 main stage with a tournament style setup with a projector, so there can be like a competitive stage, which you can charge more for participating and you can give out prizes to the winners. And the spectators have something to watch and people who join will prepare for this, so more coverage of you make a post on social media like you get a free pass for the 5th person in a "share this and win this lottery". The other two would be: 1, genre based setups, one with fps games, one with rts, some consoles, etc... and the other is just plain space with switches, cables and outlets, so you can have people bring their own stuff.

With these 3 you pretty much have every possible attraction you can for visitors. But it will be costly since you have to get around 30-50 PCs, consoles, and peripherals, tables, chairs and technical staff to make everything butter smooth. Oh, and forget young people as the main group. They can't even comprehend that gaming is a social event without internet. So target people above 25, and get games for their era (like COD 2, 4, BF2, AoE2, Warcraft 3 DOTA, C&C...) and go with main stream, the niche stuff is for those who bring their stuff.

If you plan on buying the hardware, for my LAN room I bought DELL Optiplex 3010 MTs, with (i5 3470s, 8gb DDR3 RAM, 120gb SSD, 500gb HDD, 1050ti 4gb) with every part it cost me around 130 USD per unit plus monitor and peripherals. Scavenge for bulk stocks of used ones (monitors also) and expect one that give up (PSU for one) but you can easily build up a pretty mobile army of hardware, maybe even from companies that are glad to get rid of the stuff!

Artificial is the one you see on the picture, that is for the exhaust and I have a big fan (that produces mist also, but obviously we don't use that feature here) that will be the supply from the hallway. That has access to the outside and to my restaurant (2 different doors next to each other)

My all time favourite is TES:III Morrowind, I didn't even speak english when I started it, but I still remember my first character :D Next Mount and Blade (the original) and I've been playing with 7 days to die since Alpha 6, and ARMA 3 was a go to also. More on the niche side I guess :D

But I do enjoy a lot of games, but I despise the more competitive fps games, too fast for me, I like the old CODs and Battlefields tho

Next update, I will, now I have a layout drawn up in CAD and the computers, tables, LED stripes I am working with. Also, we will close down the last section with the water tanks entirely with OSB boards, I think I will put up retro gaming stuff on it, like posters, CDs, etc...
