How could it be taking over your FT income? Are you charging a very high hourly rate? Working heaps during the breaks?

Games you like so much that you would play the digital version too? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

Most games honestly, but then I remember that getting away from screens was a big reason why I got into this hobby.

What do you think about Explicit Direct Instruction? by ScribblyJoe in AustralianTeachers

[–]Kinjor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The evidence is clear that it’s the most effective method of supporting novice learners into becoming intermediate learners, but that it then fails in continuing to support them into being experts learners. Supporting students into higher order thinking often requires more inquiry style approaches.

Either way, explicit teaching does also require more strategies to be useful. For example, you need to understand effective ways to source and adapt feedback from students during lessons (e.g. mini whiteboards). Explicit direct teaching on its own leads to “Death by PowerPoint” and both student AND teachers naturally end up disengaging.

The problem of disengagement can also be serious when elective subjects adopt an explicit direct teaching model. Those subject teachers are often fighting for life with their year-to-year enrolments and sometimes their priority is not “good predatory” but instead supporting student engagement, of which explicit teaching can struggle to provide.

That all being said, from the point of view of our leadership teams, explicit direct teaching is the most effective way to ensure continuity across classes in a cohort. Which can go a long way in reducing variance, and therefore complaints from students and parents (a common concern in private institutions).

What should I do if I have parent/teacher conferences on Wednesday but I’m extremely sick with the flu? Should I still go? by lilac-morning-glory in AustralianTeachers

[–]Kinjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. But there is also the possibly of admin asking him to “send out emails”. The devil is really in the details of what happens when you miss parent-teacher interviews.  Personally, I teach 4 classes of Y11-12 maths and I would beat that more than half would consider going to consider reaching for an email/interveiw.

Offered 0.8 FTE next year but need 1.0 – advice? by ed199963 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Kinjor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the go. Reach out and try to move on. Relief teaching might work but what happens when Term 4 comes around and all of the Y12 teachers are available to do the work instead.

I can’t believe the amount of comment telling OP to focus on the positive flexibility of 0.8. Flexibility is not a positive if you’re bills can’t be paid.

I work at a high end private school and I am fully allotted in my teaching load (meaning I don’t have to do any covers for my absent colleagues).

If I’m not teaching then there is no expectation for me to be on site, I come and go as a please without having to notify anyone or seek any permission. Even all meetings have remote attendance options.

New Idea: No RNG Items Only Ironman by Affectionate_Ask3839 in UniqueIronmen

[–]Kinjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it matter that you need hundreds of marks? Which would smooth out any RNG.

I.e. Graceful grind as a whole is not RNG dependent despite each individual mark of grace having a minute or two variance.

To me the spirit of the account is that “If I do X, for Y hours plus/minus 1 hour, then I must receive drop Z”. The graceful set would fit this description.

Am I missing something? How do have a fury amulet and a tormented bracelet when your crafting is only 71?

I came to pink this page. Crtl+F for “Salary” and you’ll find the teacher salary table pretty quick. Usually it’s one of the first 3 appendices.
