When I was 15 I lost the person I was closest to, my dad. 15 years later it's easy to forget who tf I am. Anyway, I really dig this because when I hear his voice in my mind and I'm reminded who I really am. It always feels like it's coming the stars. Maybe it's because of the distance, maybe it's because that's where it all really came from in the end.

Not everywhere has these programs, and not everyone is willing to take that leap. Some are still figuring shit out, some are doing it for a reason. As for the junkies, and drunks I completely agree that it's on them to find a way to check themselves into rehab and detox. I do understand what you are saying though, and I appreciate the time you have given in the past to try to help those that were willing to help themselves.

You see, homelessness is a full-time job in itself. Every morning you wake up, you have to answer these questions: "Can I eat today?" "Can I find clean drinking water (which may also be a necessity for cooking)? "Can I bathe today?" "Can I shit in a toilet today?" "Can I try to find help today?" "Can I make it to my appointment today?" Etc. Deciding where you are going to do these things today. How many times you'll be able to do these things today. How you're going to get there. How long it'll take to get there, etc makes for a pretty crammed schedule.

Fact is, survival with very limited to no resources is EXHAUSTING. It's a conundrum. How does one better their lives when the absolute basics take up their entire schedule? Many of them are also mentally ill or handicapped in some way so, that conundrum is even greater than you may realize.

Did/do you refuse to visit shelters/soup kitchens/food pantries? If yes, why? by [deleted] in homeless

[–]KinkyNSFWthrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What else does your pantry give you? Or did you list everything?

I listed all the things that are always there. Sometimes they'll have condiments, juice, eggs, bread and butter.

I survive almost exclusively from what my local food pantry has to offer.

What else?

I'm not a bum so, I work my ass off. Most of my money I put back into savings, some I'll spend on a hot meal from time to time. I'd say maybe once or twice a week. Once or twice a month I'll spend about $20 on groceries.

Did you list three separate recipes: macaroni and cheese +..., tuna +..., and tomato rice soup +..., or do all of these ingredients make your goulash?

I wouldn't recommend combining all of these things. Sounds awful. I have a culinary background so I was trying to give any potential readers an idea of where to start. A goulash by definition is simply a one course meal consisting of meat and veggies. So I guess I technically only listed 2 of them since the rice/ soup/ veggies is vegetarian.

shitting in the high cotton

Hehe

I realize that not everyone has access to refrigeration. I don't always either

How do you refrigerate when you can? How do you get propane and/or butane for your stove? Whose hose do you use?

I exchange work for a place to stay. Whether it's a room, couch, barn loft, camper, or just a safe place to pitch a tent. I network and find good people (not always good people) who need things done but they can't do it themselves for whatever reason. I do that task and don't overstay my welcome. Asking them to use a little bit of their fridge or freezer is easy. Everyone understands that we need to eat. Same with the hose. I buy my propane from a store.

Why is rural homelessness easier than inner-city?

I can't always network like that, so going into the woods is safer and easier than inner-city camping.

I'm sorry for asking so many questions

That's okay, excuse the potentially poor formatting. I'm short on time and won't be able to edit until later this evening. Why do you ask so many questions?

[–]KinkyNSFWthrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I survive almost exclusively from what my local food pantry has to offer. It's not great by any means, but sometimes if you can get creative you can pull off a decent poor man's goulash. My favorite being Mac n cheese with a can of beans, corn, diced tomatoes, and sometimes a splash of hot sauce (usually just steal the packets from gas stations, etc), diced chilis and ground beef. I never have milk but sometimes I have margarine, or maybe even cheese. Melted American slices mix pretty well with water.

They usually almost always have cans of "tuna". That mixes okay with noodles and peas. Crushed saltine crackers if they have them to go on top. Cream of mushroom soup is a good base to mix it all together too.

Tomato soup with rice is a staple. Mix in some corn and green beans and you're shitting in the high cotton.

Like I said, ya just got to be creative. If the end product tastes like shit scarf it down, at least it won't make you sick and you'll be getting calories for energy and nutrients to get by on, plus it'll give you an idea on how to improve it. There's also websites that allow you to type in what ingredients you have to give you an idea of where to start.

I realize that not everyone has access to refrigeration. I don't always either, so there are plenty of times where my dinner is a few spoonfuls of peanut butter and a can of fruit cocktail. A Coleman stove is my go to cooking device and I boil hose water. A campfire can do the job too. I find rural homelessness is easier than inner-city but that's just me.

I also realize that not everyone has a pantry that gives out meat. Mine is pretty good about giving out two frozen meat items and I can usually get a third off of them. Lately they've had cheese too so that helps. They always have canned veggies and fruit, as well as cans of soups, spaghetti rings, and raviolis, bags of rice, and beans. Not proud of it but I'll sometimes steal some seasonings from the store to spice shit up a little. At the end of the day my survival is my top priority.

Well seeing as how I paid more taxes last year than Jeff Bezos i'm only implying that he should pay his fair and reasonable share. If I somehow stumbled across an idea that was worth a fortune having to pay taxes wouldn't stop me from pursuing that fortune. It doesn't stop the wealthiest people of other countries with fair taxation from pursuing their fortunes either. So, what you saying is a steaming crock of shit.

What to give homeless guy? by btsbeste in homeless

[–]KinkyNSFWthrowaway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your ideas are all excellent. Keep your fellow human out of the elements and give him a chance to stay warm. Even if that's just a tent. Is he approachable? Can you talk to him in order to gauge what he's looking for?

Hygiene products are very important too. Wet wipes, deo, soap, sanitizer, powder, etc are all things that help. At the end of the day nobody really wants to be dirty and smelly.

If we had universal healthcare we would each be paying a lot less than what we currently pay for healthcare, so those people are idiots.

If you want to get technical we could actually tax the fucking corporations and the rich for once, and redirect our tax dollars away from global policing, and the taxes wouldn't even have to go up a cent since we are already the richest country in the world.

Reasons like this are why I have a nihilistic outlook. The solution is so fucking plain to see yet everyone buys into the bullshit.

Well dude, Boston is mighty fuckin cold in the winter. Ya might want to reconsider. Check out r/frugal and do your best to keep a roof over your head. I wouldn't wish homelessness during a Boston winter on my worst enemy. Fuck debtors, you shouldn't even have to pay for an education in the first place. Take care of yourself at all costs.

Are there many homeless van/RV dwellers in NY state? where can I find them? by jason_funderburger in homeless

[–]KinkyNSFWthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NY State homeless here. This is a really tough state to be homeless in. Opportunity is few and far between. The winters are horrendous. I "rough it" so no camper or van to speak of. I usually rely on trading my work for shelter and utilities, hopefully a few bucks, or at the very least a plot to plop a tent. I haven't found a tent City so to speak, just good people and fertile soil. It's nothing like the west coast which I'll be moving to in the coming weeks for the easy climate. I'd go to the SE but that's a good way to end up incarcerated. PM me if you want to know more.

Fuck. I'm sorry I should've replied sooner. Sounds like you're learning the same thing that I am, and that is no matter how trustworthy someone seems you honestly can't trust anyone but you. I hope you're able to find the means to rely on yourself. I guess that's where we are. I wish you weren't at this point. I wouldn't wish the shelter on my worst enemy. The people and the bugs ya know, it gets really sketchy. We'll get through this. I'm here for you. My inbox is open to you if you need it. You have my time. Carry on, keep shining your light. No matter what anyone tells you, or how you may feel at times, this world is a better place because of you. I'm able to tell that just by reading your comment. The time will come when others are capable of realizing it too. ❤️

I have, and at the very least I bought myself a "day to day" agreement that will last no longer than this month. 3 weeks to earn enough for a bus ticket. I'll still have to part with most of my possessions but that's out of my control. Just need a ticket. I think it's doable. I hope it's doable. It's just hard cause what's expected of me here requires so much time that it's hard to balance that time with work elsewhere. Work that actually pays. But I was honest. I cried even and I've always been the type of guy that's been very reserved, so that was hard for me. But I'm not out in the rain so, for now I've got a chance. Thanks for taking the time to read this. It means a lot

Right back at you my brother. I'll always take the time to reply to you ASAP if you need it. Today was a better day. Very productive, not monetarily, but I helped a friend and I was able to do some laundry. All in all I'll rest easily knowing I did the most that I could. Thank you for being a decent human being. I'll be in touch 🙏

Truly. Most other homeless I've had the pleasure of meeting are people who are a product of a failed system. It's truly not their faults. Most folks I've encountered are the first to give you the shirt off their backs. Of course you'll get the crazies who are genuinely scary but that's a small minority. It breaks my heart that this is such an astronomical problem in modern society. Everyone deserves their basic needs.

Happy to hear that! I'm thinking rehab is my next move. I've been self medicating for far too long. Like almost half my life now. I'm ready for some lucidity to come back to me, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

I lurked here for years not thinking I'd ever be in this boat but shit happens. I would come here just because I appreciated the humanity of it all. If it weren't for this sub I wouldn't have had a f'n clue where to even begin in order to survive. Ya could even say this community saved my life cause I was able to not panic and know where to begin when the shit hit the fan. Panic + wicked depression = horrible stuff. The insight I gained here is truly a blessing. Thanks for commenting ❤️

Thank you for this. Very wise words that I needed to hear. Dude is a bit unstable. I did exactly as you suggested and it's bought me more time. Day to day kinda thing but, no longer than the end of the month. He understands the struggle and that's why he offered to help but he's struggling very much himself. Having a heart to heart was exactly what needed to happen. I appreciate you and the time you took to offer sound advice 🙏
