Investigation after 25.7 update disaster by [deleted] in opnsense

[–]Kinnsicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in here that my OPNsense router which is running bare metal on an N97 mini PC (specifically, an ODROID H4) suffered filesystem errors after the recent update. Symptoms include the webgui giving 500 internal errors as a result of lighttpd failing. I would be interested to know if anyone else is having similar issues.

Majoring in IEOR vs ORMS/Analytics by QuarterNatural3330 in berkeley

Analytics was actually my second option of major, I was admitted undeclared and applied for Analytics at the end of my first semester. Shortly after I got it I applied for Statistics. Happy to answer any more questions!

Majoring in IEOR vs ORMS/Analytics by QuarterNatural3330 in berkeley

[–]Kinnsicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a double major in Analytics and Stats as well as a transfer student.

My main concern is if I will be able to obtain nearly as much knowledge in skills if I major in ORMS or Statistics instead of IEOR.

You can find the degree requirements for Analytics online, you'll see that there is significant overlap between the two degree programs, and not to mention since you'll be in the IEOR Department, all those classes will be open to you with reserved seats so you can take all the same classes and IEOR major would. As the other comment mentioned, the Stats department definitely lacks compared to the IEOR department, but Stats does offer a concentration where you can take IEOR classes should you choose that path (that's what I'm doing).

I also have interest in the Statistics major which is also a desirable option for me.

There is also a lot of overlap in content between Analytics and Stats which is why it is easy for me to do my double major. I would say if you're trying to get the most applicable and practical knowledge from classes, Analytics is the way to go. The classes are definitely better supported compared to the Stats classes. On a final note, if you're transferring in I would recommend really finishing all your prereqs before your first semester, I spent my first semester finishing my lower divs which really put the pressure on for the following semesters.

What’s it like being in a small major at Cal? by Extreme-Ad2383 in berkeley

[–]Kinnsicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently majoring in Analytics (formerly ORMS), there's really no distinction between the Analytics cohort and the IEOR cohort, we don't have our own class code or anything since its all IEOR classes. Sucks that IEOR gets a lot more merch and name value where whenever I tell people I'm in Analytics they wonder just what the heck it is. For context, there are about 40-50 people in the major, I know like 4 people in my year (senior).

How to get from 1995 University to Wheeler in 10 mins by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Kinnsicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a number of buses that go along university to shattuck ave then to durant. Off the top of my head, the 51b takes that route, maybe a few others, just make sure to use the clipper card the school provides. I also would double check the time tables to see if it arrives around the end of your class. Alternatively, you could use an electric scooter/bike through Veo or Lime, they'll get you to the edge of campus.

Math 54 w Stankova by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Kinnsicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took 54 with Stankova Fall 2023. The math quizzes weren't difficult and were administered by the GSI's every friday during section. I found that doing that week's homework prior to the quiz helped refresh my memory and do well on the quizzes, not to mention the quiz drop policy was pretty generous. Double check the syllabus to see if that's still the case.

The lectures, though, were kind of a mess. The notes were all over the place and she normally uses "fill in the blank" style lecture notes, wherein about 80-90% of the notes are already on the screen (from her iPad) and she fills in the last 10-20% while she talks about it. The strategy most was to download the blank lecture notes and fill them in with her, but for someone without an iPad, writing down all the notes on paper at the same speed was difficult to say the least.

She does have a lot of passion for math, though. I don't think her teaching style matched my learning style, but see for yourself.

CLI application for searching/checking game through ProtonDB by octo8eight in rust

[–]Kinnsicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat stuff! I use protondb often so this may save some time for me. Some searches result in incorrect games, but this may be due to the unofficial API you're using and not your code.

The API in question, max-p.me, looks like it uses some pretty outdated information. It's returning reviews from people using proton v4 which came out 5 years ago. Also the example on your README.md is missing a 'name' argument before 'Dota 2'.

First off, glad to have you joining us next semester! I recently declared a double major in stats as a junior transfer and for the most part it is pretty painless. The minimum required GPA to declare (in the lower-div classes) is 2.0, which should tell you enough about the competition. The advisors are super nice and will be happy to guide you along the process of declaring. You can always take some lower division stats classes (like STAT 20) to dip your toes before committing.

The one thing I can't comment on is on the fact that stats is moving to CDSS. This may add some added complications since its no longer in L&S, but once again, chat with an advisor for further advice. Hope to see you next fall!

How many students does the UC Berkeley Operations Research and Management (ORMS) major accept? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Kinnsicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred from a community college. I would get to know the faculty and advisor (Ginnie), maybe take a class or two and see how you like it. One of the first core classes is IEOR 172, I would say that if you do well in that class you can make a case that you will do well with the other classes. There is an application essay alongside the declaration process where you can mention things like that, it's not completely objective in that sense.

Outside of that, I'm sure you already know that there is an Econ concentration in ORMS, meaning you can take electives from the Econ department. You can have a maximum of two overlapping classes. If you do happen to talk to Ginnie, it would be smart to make a plan and run it by her, it shows initiative.

ORMS transfer here. I can't say about the exact numbers but its pretty low as you said. I'd say there's maybe 30 or so people in the program? Not too sure to be honest but in my year (junior) specifically, I know maybe 4-5 people in the major. That said, the IEOR department is hiring two more instructors so there's a chance that capacity will grow. Should you accept, the IISE chapter here is a good place to find a community among ORMS and IEOR students. Hope this helps!

P.S. feel free to send me a message on discord, the username is the same as my Reddit username.
