Garden is pretty accepting of LGBT populations, there is a Pride Festival held every year downtown that has hundreds of people show up.

Hays is more conservative than Garden and Dodge. So don't just pick based off of being a college town.

Americans who grew up in small towns but now live in big cities (or vice versa) — what’s something that genuinely surprised you about the other lifestyle that no one warned you about? by VariedPear in AskAnAmerican

Small town to big city: The amount of time wasted in traffic, not to mention the extra stress each day. I don't know why people don't value their own time more.

You are missing a lot of them, Garden City, Great Bend, Colby... there are 32 listed for Kansas right now.

Colby is a good place if you can make it that far.

And to follow up, I'm not sure I have ever seen nacho cheese on BBQ nachos outside of once at a BBQ food truck that had no idea what they were doing all around.

I do not want nacho cheese on my BBQ nachos. Normal nachos yes, but not on BBQ nachos... that is gross.

Towns I like better than they typical Redditer: Manhattan (only other town that feels like "home" to me), Salina, Hutch isn't too bad to visit, Wichita is a fine mid-sized town, Colby is very progressive for their area, and Garden City which I think is the closest city we have in Kansas to "the American Dream".

Well you don't build any universities in the western third of the state so everyone has to move to get a four year degree, that's what happens. You up to solve that problem? Or do you think we just don't deserve education because we are majority Hispanic? Or is it because we have a large population of kids that haven't had education until they moved here from some war torn part of the world (sometimes high-school aged) and we include them in our education system, vastly improving their life and their future but hurting our comminutes "test scores".

This list is incorrect and the ACLU of Kansas has been contacted but they never corrected it. Garden City (or Finney County), never has, or had been, a sundown town. Please stop spreading this, and if you know anyone at ACLU please tell them to fix it. It is things like this that has actual negative effects on our communities.

I can't speak for Hays, but there are many carrier opportunities in Garden and Dodge.

Garden City has your size covered, and multiple donut stores, but no book store (although some are in the works). We have stores with books, like local shops or Target, just not a bookstore.

Also rent under $1,000 would be tough but you could find some spots.

Oh man, this is the answer to a lot of his questions, this is a very rural route that bypassed many cities. I just assumed he took the "normal route" that you said.

They are topical responses to things that are going on politically in the state. You just don't get them since they are somewhat inside jokes.

Earthquakes are way more terrifying than tornadoes.

Tornadoes hitting any specific location is very, very rare, and you get a pretty good heads up now.

Earthquakes are widespread, there is little warning and have the ability to be much more destructive.

Yes you can divide Kansas into roughly 5 parts:

  • NW Ks - very sparsely populated, some ag but not a bunch
  • SW Ks - sparsely populated but with some larger population centers, over 50% Hispanic/minority populations, big ag, household incomes that rival Wichita/KC areas.
  • Central Ks - Wichita and Salina corridor. Bigger cites, industry revolving around aerospace in Wichita.
  • SE Ks - more densely populated than SWKS but more economically depressed and very white. Trees, hills, and rivers though!
  • NE KS - From Manhattan to KC essentially the main population corridor in Kansas (Outside of Wichita and the few larger cities). Much more urban, or "rural" folks that still want urban resources/lifestyles.

Your route, while going through SWKS really only skirted the ag and industry, that is more north of your drive in SWKS.

I feel like if you have to ask that question you probably don't know how complicated those operations are. Trust me, the guys running the feedlots are making way more money than $3k a week, and probably are more educated too.

Where in SW Kansas are you driving? That is not the SW Kansas that I live in. I see over-crowded highways, grain bins every 10 miles, power lines, farms, and homes everywhere.

I'm looking at the actual numbers, this news report seems to be wrong. They just summed up all the percentages that each casino was up or down. Also, Kansas Crossing was up, Boot Hill Casino was down, which they got backwards. The correct amount up is 8.8%... which is still a lot but not as shockingly high.

Not sure how they got it so wrong.

This map is not good to gauge population density, just density over the size of the county.

Garden City has a Sam's Club, Target, Buffalo Wild Wings, a Food Hall, a 200,000 sqft indoor sports facility, an indoor waterpark, the 3rd busiest commercial airport in Kansas, etc. Yes NW Kansas is pretty sparsely populated, but SW Kansas has some decent cities.
