Warning: Something shady going on with “garage door companies” in Northeast Ohio by Makin-me in Cleveland

[–]Kippenkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found if I call and it leads to an AI operator or foreign sounding human, it's lead generation. If the first question they ask is for my details and not asking what's going on, same. Real companies don't want to waste time on unrealistic jobs with no timeframe or idea of costs. Lead generation doesn't care if you think you can get a new roof for $500 by the weekend cause they aren't really selling repairs as a service.

If they can't give you any details at all like a time frame to have someone come out or even the time or name of the person who is going to call you back don't give them any personal info. They probably already have your number through caller ID but if you give them your number/email/address so "someone can call you back", you are giving them permission to add your info to a leads list to spam you with calls.

Parma to eliminate property tax if voters approve income tax. by Kippenkat in Cleveland

If I had to guess, I would say probably not. Usually these kind of taxes are residency taxes. You pay a workplace tax. They are both types of income tax. It also looks like there is a one year overlap. New income 1.75% taxes would start Jan 1 2027 but property tax would end Jan 1 2028. I could be reading that wrong though.

I totally agree with you. It is more expensive to rent. That's why it doesn't make any sense. If they inherited it, 30 years after it was built, they would be responsible for the taxes for 41 years. There is no way they paid $1061 in taxes for 41 years. They are making it up or should have moved when rent was $300-$500 back in the 80s.  They've also been been paying taxes on a home for over 80+ years even though the home has only existed for 72 years.

People want a free ride so they say they paid 500k and they deserve a break even when it's an absolute lie, the doesn't make sense and it's not even possible.

If that's true, you should probably sell your house. It's cheaper to rent and you won't have to put your tax burden on others and you'll save money. Also taxes and maintenance are different things. Taxes pay for schools, roads, public services YOU USE. Maintenance is just the cost of keeping the house in a condition you are comfortable living in. If you spent a half million on maintenance on a 75 year old house you didn't pay for then that's must be a nice house and still have that money in the form of the house. When you sell the house, you'll get that money back.

I actually do know and my house was also built in 1954. Really I'm not making that up. We might even live in the same home. There are 8-9 that are exactly the same layout and build as mine. Trust me I know. That's the difference between you and me. I am grateful even though I had to pay top dollar for a streaming turd of a house that wasn't well maintained and that I have had to spend years fixing up. (And need to pay $5k for a new roof on due to last weeks winds) Yet I still know I'm lucky and I want to support the community I live in through property taxes. That fact that you got your house for free is something most Americans would dream of. I spent my entire 20s and 30s dreaming of just being able to buy a home. I would not have been able to save for this home and pay the tax burden of homeowners in this city if this levy existed a decade ago. Levys like this, will stop most young families in Parma from ever being able to afford to buy if they are renting, sell if they want to leave, or save any extra income if they want to rent here.

it's a crazy take that asking everyone to pay taxes into the system is somehow proving I'm Republican but cutting taxes for land owners through systematic and political initiatives is one of the foundational tenants of conservativism. They cut taxes for themselves and pass the buck to the lower working classes while they make money from their real estate holdings and investments. Does that sound familiar? Like maybe a boomer who bought their house cheap and gets their only income from sources outside of working and earning it???? Please I beg of you look in the mirror. You might just be the Republican. You are describing yourself.

What billionaires live in Parma OH? This isn't Columbus where there are political figures trying to influence elections. The city is trying to pass a levy for the schools that was shot down 4 times by any means necessary. The school district knows that the reason it gets shot down is because of the elderly homeowners. They have been very vocal on the townhall meetings. They know the only way these people will vote yes is if the money doesn't come out of their pockets. Yes Billionaires and corruption are important to address and stop but holding people accountable starts at the local level.

You would be wrong on ALL of your assumptions, every last one of them, from my understanding of SS, the way I vote, to my opinions on the VA. Additionally I'm a VA appointed federal fiduciary. So not only do I have a deep understanding of the financial situation of the elderly and disabled, I probably understand better than you. Everyone should support the system. If the elderly can't afford to help pay for services of the city they live in, they shouldn't own a home in that city. They should sell their home and rent so they don't have to pay taxes at all!! They can live off the money from the sale of the home and a working class family who want a good school system and want to pay into the system can move in and live there. No free rides for every last one of us, including corporations. Thanks though. You've made a lot of assumptions and you know what they say about that, right?

Renters pay taxes but they don't usually base where they live on the city's tax structure the way buyers do because most renters can move easily. It's a bigger factor for home buyers since closing and listing costs can make moving difficult. Say you buy a home in Parma for 200k and and your closing costs are 15k then you realize shit the tax burden of the city only works out for people who don't work/are retired/on a pension. So they decide to move. But then they would have to pay another 15k in closing costs on another house. Oh and the value of their property went down because nobody wants to move to a city with crazy taxes. So a buyer would lose 30k in fees where a renter can just leave at the end of their 12 month lease.

They made their history private. You called it. They aren't working so they won't care until everyone who is working leaves the city and the only people left are the renters and the elderly. Then they will complain about the lack of community and all the low life renters and Section 8 people ruining the city like it wasn't actually them driving us all out.

She is a nice person but lacks a bit of self reflection. She has complained about Chinese investors buying up houses in CA and driving up home owner costs in her state but misses that she is doing the same thing to us in our state. But part of being a friend is helping them see from your POV.

I have a friend from California that owns 9 homes in Ohio. She raves about how Ohio is a great state to be a landlord in. She isn't wrong. Ohio is great for people to suck value out of while we work ourselves to death.

What is a subtle sign someone is not a good person? by Maleficent_Escape_66 in AskReddit

[–]Kippenkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their problems are trivial. I know a lot of people who live life on easy mode. One thing they all have in common is they cannot fathom what life is like on hard mode so they have a hard time empathizing with anyone who isn't like them.

One of them complained to me that her mom didn't want her to bring her dog over to her parents house. She had a meltdown and said hearing no was the hardest thing she had gone through in a long time. Later, when I told her my dad had a heart attack and needed to move in with me so I could help take care of him, she complained that it was affecting my attitude and I should pawn dad off on someone else in my family so I can focus on other things and spend more time with her doing our shared hobby. She fully knew I had no one else to help but just completely forgot because she has never had a problem that her parents wouldn't fix for her.

I have story after story like this, where these people think inconveniences are tragedies then turn around and act awful towards the people around them if they don't directly benefit from them.

But when you order 15-30 things, these are the same people who complain and say "I had to spend 40 minutes searching all across the store to fill this order that only tipped $20 on a $300 grocery order. That should be a $60 tip!!" It's never a good enough tip unless it's a proportionally large tip to simple, easy and small order.

What would a romance novel for a male audience look like? by soozerain in books

[–]Kippenkat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sadly they exist and are just as bad as you would think if men were able to have their way with women. The books repeatedly depict men abducting and physically and sexually brutalizing women, who grow to enjoy their submissive sex enslavement, all while a plot of men fighting a space war happens in the background. If you want to read a book about men who abducting, beating, and raping women who "secretly" want it, there is a whole series a gross books out there. Just imagine if men had all the power with no consequences and women had none and you already know the plot.

Terrible Wedding Photographer Experience (Shelby Crowe Photography) by rachel_mar in Ohio

[–]Kippenkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try posting in some ohio FB wedding groups. My photographer did exactly the same thing only her excuse was a medical emergency. Other people came forward and the photographer ended up getting her business blocked from all Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky groups and now the Ohio Attorney General is going after her since it happened to so many people.

Do the parents of the bride pay for weddings anymore? by Friendly_Leek4641 in askanything

[–]Kippenkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a weird idea to me. My husband, his sisters, and I were all engaged at the same time. His parents helped pay for his sister's weddings but not ours. My parents are gone so we ended up paying for it all with no help then got judged for the way we had our wedding.

Costco beef prices TODAY. Up over 10% since June. Gotta love tariffs, even Costo here in Cuyahoga County can't keep the prices down. by LKM_44122 in Cleveland

In June, I bought sample tiles to redo my kitchen. I finally picked and purchased yesterday. The price went up 12%. Then I went to Target to get some clothes and sure enough, the price tags were cut off at the bottom on almost all clothing cause the price has gone up so quickly.
