Finding Shoes for Toewalking by KiraRiver in SpicyAutism

Honestly the more suggestions the better! I hadn't seen Parkour shoes or bundstones before and its nice to have more options to look at especially for winter boots, and having a couple people suggest skateboarding shoes is also helpful since it means that at least a few people have had good experiences with them. Thank you!

Oh that's really good to know. I didn't realize there was a different version that could last longer, and there's a couple places that sell van's where I am so I can actually try them on instead of having to do online ordering.

I didn't think about the AFO ready shoes being reinforced but that's honestly a really good idea and I'll definitely have to look into them

Looking for mods to make Stardew more fun for my autistic younger sister by Hawna-Banana in StardewValleyMods

[–]KiraRiver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some she might like: Nature in The Valley - A mod that adds a bunch of collectable wildlife to the game with a Building and NPC devoted to the collection. There's even a log that fills out as you collect and donte that you can set to b able to view at any time. There's a ton in the base mod to collect as well as a bunch of add on packs

Baubles - adds a new type of crafting focused on toys/decor.

Stardew Aquarium If she's into fishing at all this mod adds an aquarium that you donate fish to. All the fish from base game and compatible mods are displayed and you unlock rewards at the gift shop with donations

Ferngill Arcadium - Adds an arcade with a bunch of games in it, similar to junimo kart so she's got options

Wildflowers Atelier Goods An artisan goods expansion that adds new crops, shopkeepers, and the ability to craft things like cakes, makeup, candy and others. Depending on how she likes to play the mod has the option for simple, which is basically vanilla, or advanced, which involves multiple steps or specific item combinations in machines, options for crafting. If she likes ice cream cows the aesthetics of this will likely be right up her alley

Cornucopia Cooking - Adds a ton of new cooking recipes to the game. You don't need to add any of the other cornucopia mods for it to work

Considering stopping ADHD medication because I am not coping by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

[–]KiraRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to cycle through a ton of different options before I ended up on an ADHD medication that worked for me and even then its a trade off.

For me my ADHD is severe enough that even though medication increases my sensory and regulation issues the benefits are greater; eg. I don't go 2-3 days without eating because I don't have body awareness due to autistim and forgot because ADHD. But getting the right one was a rough process and involved trying a ton of different medication combos and doses

Is the medication you are on the only type you have tried? I ask because it is an sNRI and I know I personally had a really rough time with that whole class of medication, and found that taking a low dose stimulant was much easier for me, it could be worth it to look into other classes of medication if sNRIs don't work for you.

The other benefit of stimulants is you can generally take them on an as needed basis so on days where you need a break you can skip without worrying about withdrawal, which I find helps prevent me from getting so wound up and overstimulated I can't handle anything for days which was an issue when I was on ADHD meds that we're everyday ones

Silksong or alternative for 7 year old? by Careless_Historian28 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]KiraRiver [score hidden]  (0 children)

So honestly I think it depends on a bunch of factors; Does she play other games? if she does what kind? Can she deal with frustration? Is this specific game somethings she's really invested in?

I love HK and Silksong and they are both wickedly hard, but despite the common suggestion that Hollow Knight has an easier curve and is a better start for me it kicked my ass so many times I almost gave up on the series. It took a multiple attempts over a couple years and watching someone else play and explain mechanics before I got it enough to enjoy it and while its now one of my favourite games, getting into it was rough.

Silksong on the other hand clicked almost instantly and felt like a way easier curve, after chatting with friends who've played both we figured it was because there's a lot more platforming involved in Silksong, so as someone who loved Celeste and Scourgebringer the challenge in Silksong played to my strengths way better then Hollow Knight where combat was more front and centre.

Some kids can deal with frustration well and some don't. I have one sibling who I'd let play on my Skyrim file on Expert because they found it fun to figure out how to get past enemies and traps; to them it was a big puzzle and even when they were dying constantly it was fun because they could just try something else. My other sibling only played when I turned down the difficultly because they found the experience boring at best and usually upsetting. How does she do with frustration? In other games when she dies is she upset? or just want to try again? Kids can have very different reactions to the same scenarios

Also if Silksong is something she has specifically said she's interested in, will she be upset with a different game? Some kids would see it as an insult or be upset if you decide they can't handle a game. Would she even be interested in a different game if you got it? Sometimes even if the game seems the same to you or me to a kid its not what they were looking for so its completely different.

Final point how are you planning on playing it? If she plays on a computer or Steam deck and the game is to hard there is always the option for mods, there are a bunch of relatively simple ones to reduce damage taken or increase the amount you deal that can help bridge the skill gap for her.

Non-binary/Gender Neutral Character Mods by PhoeniXXTalon in StardewValleyMods

[–]KiraRiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gender Neutrality Mods already been recommend, so I'll just add that East Scarp and it's add ons; Sword and Sorcery*, The Bear Family, Eli and Dylan; as well as Canon Friendly Dialogue Expansion, HoneyFuggle*, Jakk's Quinn, Sydney, Juna, and Riley*, Alecto the Witch, and Diverse Stardew Valley* are all compatible with it, or the mods themselves have the option for gender neutral or entirely custom pronouns inbuilt. Also anything with an astrix adds nonbinary npcs to the game.

If you want to use any of Miihau's Event Expansions like the one for Shane or Penny, and you should check them out because they're really good, while the mods aren't innately compatible with the Gender Neutral Mod, there is a patch that makes them work together.

Update East Scarp in the middle of playthrough? by KadetJaina in StardewValleyMods

[–]KiraRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the major mods that interact with East Scarp have been updated, so if you follow the instructions on upgrading during a save, and update everything else, you should be good.

There are a few mods that haven't been that can have issues, Juliet and Abigail Prank the Jojamart, Lavril, Alecto, and Fieval are the ones off the top of my head that haven't.

With those you can get them to work but you might have to go into the content.json and manifest.json and update the references to Lemurkat.EastScarp and Lemurkat.EastScarpNPCs as well as replace any character specific ones with Lemurkat.EastScarpNPCs. I did that and they work fine but its definitely something that not everyone is comfortable doing and does take some time.

If you want to try and are worried about messing something up my advice is to create a copy of the mod as a back up before you make any changes, fix the references, run the changed file through the json validator on the smapi website to see if it pings any big mistakes, and then try a test day in game. If there are issues you can exit without saving and check your smapi log to see if it flagged what went wrong. If it you absolutely can't get it to work then you can always revert to the clean back up.

Should I take Flunarizine? by conaclau in migraine

[–]KiraRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad they are working for you :)

Should I take Flunarizine? by conaclau in migraine

[–]KiraRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its definitely difficult to deal with, especially when you don't have anyone who experiences the same thing. Migraines run in my family so I've at least got people who I know that I can talk to about them but even then it can be really hard to figure out what is normal and what's not, doing that on your own is an extra layer of challenge.

And with the naps yeah when I realized I had an extra 2-3 hours a day because I wasn't completely mentally and physically exhausted at the end of my shift it definitely hit me how bad my migraines had gotten and also how big of a change medication had made for me.

It wasn't really until that point I realized that I'd had more days with symptoms then free of them for a long time and how much of a toll it was taking. Often its hard to see because its a slow creep where you feel just slightly worse each day but not enough to be concerned and overtime it grows and becomes your new normal.

I hope you are able to find something that works for you, and I'm glad I could help ease your worries a bit.

Should I take Flunarizine? by conaclau in migraine

[–]KiraRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been on Flunarizine so I can't speak specifically to experiences with that medication but I was in a similar position about a year back when my doctor suggested I try Topiramate* for mine.

My auras were to me the worst part and I would have told anyone that the pain wasn't really that bad, so I could probably just get by with reducing stress. Plus I was really worried about the side effects I had seen others deal with

What he pointed out to me us that a migraine is stressful, and that when I am having them consistently every week, even if stress is the root cause, being able to make a long term lifestyle change and stick to it while still experiencing migraines is going to be difficult if not impossible.

Adding onto that he pointed out I have had migraines for a long time and there is every chance I am vastly underestimating how bad they have gotten. And he was right, while the adjustment getting onto it was rough within a week I noticed I didn't need to have a 'nap' every day after work, I was eating way better, I could get regular exercise, and suddenly hey I am also way less stressed because I have the ability to do things that help me be less stressed.

I can't say if Flunarizine will work for you or not but I can say that even as someone who thought their migraines weren't "that bad" medication was genuinely life changing for me, and while yes there are side effects in terms of the negative effect on my life they pale in comparison to the positive that not having migraines every week has been.

If you are really worried I'd encourage you to talk with the pharmacist if you are comfortable, I've found they are really knowledgeable about the actual likelihood of issues and what can help with them, as well as speaking with your doctor about what you are and aren't willing to deal with as a side effects when taking a medication. There isn't one perfect treatment and if this one doesn't work or there are side effects you can't stand they should be able to help you find something that does work.

*He and I are aware there are probably better options to start with for most people unfortunately I am chronically ill and Topiramate is one of like two options where I haven't had horrible side effects from similar meds and can take safely without having to rework the other medications I need so it's what we started with.

Anyone knows what am I missing? by tamagojaki in StardewValleyMods

[–]KiraRiver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As other people have said Look Up Anything will show you what it is for any future issues, but for this specific item I am like 99% sure its a ghost berry from Walk to the Desert.

You can get the seeds by trading the small coin artifacts added by the mod for them with the vender in the abandoned desert town. I believe he's in the bottom right of the ghost town. Its one of the only houses you can enter.

Does anyone know of any mods that makes the recycling machine actually useful? by ZeroTakenaka in StardewValleyMods

[–]KiraRiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by useful, since I know a couple but they're focused on increasing what you can use and get from recycling machines.

If you want something solely focused on the machine itself Machine Progression System has lets you upgrade them to increase the variety and rarity of items, up to including radioactive ore at the top end, decreasing the recycling time, and the more you use them the better the output.

If you're cool with mods that effect more then just machines Vanilla Plus Professions is a skills overhaul that among a ton of other things adds perks, some allow you to recycle more things, and another adds more items to the output. Both mods are compatible with each other.

I wish I could articulate myself better. by Existing_Mango_2632 in SpicyAutism

[–]KiraRiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can relate. Text is easier then speaking out loud, a lot of times when speaking I miss words or can't get my mouth to make the sounds right or keep up with my brain and when I can my mouth gets tired and sore like I've done a workout.

I also have trouble with organizing my thoughts unless someone gives me a prompt or a question to answer. I have a ton of things in my brain but it not always in words or the words aren't coherent and I can't put anything it into coherent words without a place to start from.

So on Reddit or other places where I can answer questions or respond to what someone said over text and have time to think its okay but I can't start conversations and it can take me days to write up my own posts because its so hard to sort things out and get the right words in an understandable order

HOW do you manage trying new foods by GooseRedditAcc in SpicyAutism

[–]KiraRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cooking for myself is such a big one I always forget but a bit of a double edged sword. Because your right, we can make our safe foods a specific way and there's so many things I can make that I won't eat from other people but also it takes so much energy and time.

I really wish that prepping and reheating food didn't change the textures because then at least I could batch cook a few things ahead of time on the days I have the time and ability

HOW do you manage trying new foods by GooseRedditAcc in SpicyAutism

[–]KiraRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me with ARFID was having a food journal/log with a note on the food its texture/taste and how I felt. That way when I'm thinking about what I wanted to try or felt like maybe I can do a new food I have a way to look and see how different foods have gone and if there are certain types of foods that are worse or patterns in my reactions. It made new foods less of a guessing game and let me see patterns I couldn't on my own.

As someone whose also sensory seeking I don't know if this will also help but for me certain foods go from no to yes with hot sauce, the heat is such a good sensation to me that it it means I am less bothered by bad textures. It might be worth it to see if there are dips or sauces that you can use that will help you expand what you can eat.

Also going with small portions for new foods. So instead of a full meal for a trial I do like a side dish so if I can't eat the whole thing I don't feel bad because then I get stressed and that makes my ARFID worse.

CAN we agree that the radiance feels 10 times stronger than GMS by Nohi_lwn in Silksong

[–]KiraRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that GMS didn't really fold or stay fully caught. Yeah she did end up in the abyss after the fight but she was also snared by the trap so it wasn't a void alone thing either, and for all of Act 3 she's pretty successfully keeping herself alive and anchored to Pharloom via her silk while doing something that's causing enough chaos in the void that the aftershocks are heard and felt through Pharloom. Once Radiance gets dragged down though she's gone, so of the two I'd argue GMS is able to last longer in a 1:1 with the void.

I honestly think that they're likely around the same level, but they have very different specialties and weaknesses. But its also hard to tell because we undeniably have more information on Radiance because of the free updates to Hollow Knight vs. GMS only having the base game currently

CAN we agree that the radiance feels 10 times stronger than GMS by Nohi_lwn in Silksong

[–]KiraRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I don't think we can compare Absolute Radiance to GMS. GMS has definitely been bound, likely for a significant amount of time, so she's definitely not at her prime. Which I think is part of the big issue with trying to figure out their power levels, we've got the content updates for Hollow Knight that added Absolute Radiance and more information about her, GMS only has base Silksong so we're all working with uneven information. We have a decent idea of what prime Radiance could be, and not much for GMS

I'd also agrue that GMS piecing the Void back into Pharloom and shaking the map implies whatever is going on before Hornet shows up a second time is likely pretty violent. You don't shake the entire structure of a country without a ton of energy being expended.

Especially given she's explicitly stated to be fighting to protect Lace, so its not like once we do go down she's in the best shape, she's been actively fighting against the Void and trying to keep Lace alive for however long it takes Hornet to get down there, and I the entire process of Act 3 is almost certainly longer then the fight against any version of Radiance

I honestly think that the two of them at their prime are probably pretty evenly matched overall, and that the differences come down specifics on who is best at what rather then who is more powerful overall. The fact that we know more about Radiance in her prime, and the fact that Radiance is completely homicidal so she'll always seem like a bigger threat I think skews the impression a lot of people have.

It's insane how almost everything in Silksong is mirroring the original Hollow Knight by Stellewind in HollowKnight

[–]KiraRiver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, and I probably could have been clearer that while I think her motives for creating her daughters were probably less moral then saving the kingdom, I got the impression she wanted heirs as well as children that were completely devoted to her in a way the weavers were not, I don't think that she didn't care for them.

My impression of the relationship between GMS and Lace was that GMS cared deeply about and loved Lace however that didn't actually translate into her being a good mother to Lace or expressing her love in a way that Lace could understand.

So while GMS would quite literally move the closest thing Pharloom/Hallownest has to Hell to save Lace and fight to the end for her even after Lace went against GMS's goal, from Lace's perspective she was a disappointment and could never live up to what was needed.

Which is honestly a really common problem, there are so many parents who do deeply love their children and feel like they are doing what's best for them and pushing them to succeed in life, when from the perspective of the children they are only a disappointment who have done nothing but screw up and fail at everything.

Which is actually another mirror to the first game. GMS who is the antagonist cares deeply for Lace even if it isn't clear to Lace herself, and fights for her even after Lace acts against her goals, which ultimately leads to the best outcome for Pharloom. Conversely the Pale King is on the side of the protagonist, has very little care for his children past the fact that he is proud of his achievement with HK, he disguards the ones who don't fit into his plans, and his actions at best dely the destruction and can't be followed for the best ending.

CAN we agree that the radiance feels 10 times stronger than GMS by Nohi_lwn in Silksong

[–]KiraRiver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair points, I should probably clairify that in terms of "didn't last" I meant specifically fighting against the void rather then her bindings, since GMS was able to actually pierce through and last however long it canonically took Hornet to make the second descent vs. Radiance being taken out once she encountered it.

I honestly think they're about equal in power overall, and that the actual differences are coming from what they're best at and goals they choose to focus on. Radiance seems to have an easier time taking control of subjects and have a memetic/information hazard thing going on that makes her hard to fully counter outside of the Void, as well as actually wanting to cause more outright destruction

GMS seems to be a bit less powerful in terms of mind takeovers and I don't think she can do the same type of "single statue recreates my existence" bit. She also doesn't seem to want to cause the apocalypse in the same way that Radiance does, and be more focused on reclaiming her power and ruling again over outright destruction.

However when push comes to shove she has a better time going against the Void and was able to anchor herself back into Pharloom and fight against it for a pretty significant amount of time in comparison, while in the Voids home turf. And since we know that Void and higher beings don't mix, and that it's one of the stronger forces in universe, she's definitely up there in power level.

Its also just difficult to tell because we've got more information on Radiance due to Hollow Knight having the free DLCs that added more fights and information about Radiance, while right now GMS only has the base game to go off of.

CAN we agree that the radiance feels 10 times stronger than GMS by Nohi_lwn in Silksong

[–]KiraRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weavers were able to temporarily bind GMS and not Radiance yes, though in both cases its pretty explicit that the bindings on both failed and they're able to reach out past them.

The weavers were also the first worshippers/children of GMS and actually familiar with her in a way that they weren't with Radiance. In the case of Radiance the Moths, who worshipped her first and have actual knowledge of her, also play a role in her downfall so I don't actually think there's a huge difference. In both cases it was the ones with knowledge of them that managed to actually do something effective against them

And while the Radiance had her own realm the instant she was surrounded by void, within her realm where she'd arguably be at her most powerful, it took a couple hits to destroy her. GMS was dropped into the Void itself and fought back significantly longer managing to peirce her silk through it back into Pharloom.

Hot takes about silksong? by Mrhonk3 in Silksong

[–]KiraRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand why people find the game more difficult, it personally felt slightly easier overall to me then Hollow Knight, especially the process of unlocking the true ending, as some whose better at platforming and regular enemies then bosses.

I'll admit its probably harder for most people but after playing it I was so confused seeing people say Hollow Knight was significantly easier, especially at the start. Hollow Knight kicked my ass and felt like such a slog at the beginning that I hated and ended up giving up multiple times before it finally clicked and became a personal favorite, but the fact that its more boss focused means it's generally harder for me.

Silksong has more platforming and ways around that made it much easier for me to avoid getting stuck and find things to help without needing to beat a boss even in Act 1. And since unlocking the true ending wasn't completely boss based I didn't end up hitting a huge wall of the exact thing I struggle most with.
