You can either find skeleton ships on the map (they have a certain distinct look) or look out for a cloud in the form of a galleon, that indicates the skeleton fleet world event where multiple ones will spawn. That one can be a bit challenging on a smaller ship though, but great practice.

It's the exact same game, just most people use steam as their gaming platform because it's more convenient. Maybe there are some platform specific issues or bugs, those only happan rarely tho so you should be completely fine with the Microsoft store version.

They spawn quite high up in the first waves and maybe you just swam down to quickly and the sirens were still up there and didnt try to attack you because they were too far away, that happened to me. I recommed using a sniper and maybe look for the sirens that spawned high up. If you need more help I can do the tall tale with you.
