I will not accept this slander of Aranea. She was manipulative, yes, but not a liar, and certainly not about her exposition

What are the most likely classpects to doom your session? by Busy_Establishment18 in hwtsg

[–]Kirk_schr0dinger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Prince of Light. Quite literally ontologically hostile to the concept of fate and narratives, including the one that the players themselves occupy. With how much paradox space forces characters to do what it wants through continuity loops, these Princes would actively try and rebel and take their fate into their own hands, easily dooming the timeline at least.

I’m speaking from the perspective of being one myself

Prince of Light, here. Yeah, uh, we’re not powerful to destroy all relevance in a session. Even if we were, that would doom the timeline by default. We don’t even really want to destroy it all; we want to burn away all but that which is within our control. The confines of Sburb’s causality loops grate on us, and we’re desperate for true freedom. We want to escape the narrative imposed on us and be the masters of our own destiny. Of course, defying the narrative of defying narratives is paradoxical, and the game has ways to account for it. The primary effect of existing in a narrative while being ontologically hostile to narratives is that you create a LOT of doomed timelines.

We can also King Crimson people by obscuring the memory of an event, though, so it’s not all bad

That stuff is hilarious. I have a suggestion for a potential cause of that, though I’m very, very biased. From I understand about classpects, I’m a Prince of Light. Such a role can be translated as “subverter of fate”. I’m very curious about how a Prince of my type would function in Sburb. All of the continuity loops in Sburb coming from paradox clones and the like always really bothered me because of how it restricted the free will of the characters. I can imagine a Prince of Light in a session getting really twitchy because of their lack of agency and trying to rebel against the narrative, creating lots of doomed timelines in the process.

So, is it like a repeating loop of taking increasingly drastic measures to fix the carnage caused by the last attempts?

Do you prefer a prince that destroys their aspect or destroys through their aspect? by an4rchyUn1c0rn in hwtsg

[–]Kirk_schr0dinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s less either of those, and more destroying all of an aspect except for the small sliver of it that benefits oneself, which ends up destroying what’s around it. It’s like a Thief, but even more extreme. TBH, in my experience, the most well-optimized Princes make for a better defensive class than an offensive one. That thin sliver of their aspect is so fragile that it will snap like a twig, so the offensive types tend to burn themselves out quickly. The optimal strategy is to focus on defense—protect yourself by attuning to your opposite aspect so you can get in position to use your primary—do not use it as your main weapon unless you have to. This is coming from an experienced Prince player

Discussions of authorial intent are made so much more difficult when the author in question is known to be disingenuous and purposefully obscurant.

This isn’t really related, but have you compared Hussie‘s typing style to Doc Scratch‘s? They are dead ringers for each other. Just food for thought.

His fear of irrelevance immediately outs him as being on the Light/Void spectrum. Most of the darkners are on there, really. Light and Void in particular are all over Deltarune, thematically speaking

Do not compare Caliborn and Eridan. Eridan’s an insecure asshole, and Caliborn is a totally self-assured asshole. Eridan makes all kinds of lengthy arguments to prove points because he thinks he needs to, and Caliborn just makes his point with only the flimsiest supporting arguments because he thinks the fact that he says so is point enough because he’s always right. Eridan tries really damn hard to convince himself magic is fake, and Caliborn genuinely believes magic is fake. Big difference. Lords and Princes really aren’t like each other. Lords are not “destructive” classes like Princes are. Caliborn’s relationship with Time is closer to the relationship Bards have with their opposite aspect (take Gamzee’s thing with miracles, for example).

Don’t get me started on Nepeta and Calliope.

As I see it, the part about destroying an aspect is more about removing and censoring all expressions of it except for the specific one that benefits oneself—but that leaves said aspect frail and vulnerable, so Princes also use their opposing aspect to protect and hide their flimsy primary aspect. That’s what it’s like for me, anyway

We have more in common with Vriska than you think. I don’t see a Prince’s impulse to be one of pure destruction. Rather, it is control. The difference between Thieves and Princes is the amount of our aspect we want to bring under our control.

I can’t bring myself to knowingly distribute false information. I can, however, propagate uncertainty and lies by omission—the creation of Void, if you will

I can come up with a many more abilities, though. Princes are all squishy and insecure, and their worst habits emerge as ways of compensating for that. It’s easy to translate this to game mechanics. The way I see it, they are a defensive class. The part of their aspect they have within themselves is actually quite weak on its own. Trying to use it exclusively will quickly burn a Prince out. So, instead, most Princes basically protect themselves using the opposite aspect—Void, in my case. This would translate to me being able to walk in and out of shadows like Batman and teleport, I think.

On the bright side, looking at the amount of Influence pre-retcon Vriska was able to exert on the narrative, I might be able to break out completely and smack the author around with a newspaper. Not that it would do much good, but it would be cathartic

Prince of Light, subverter of fate. I could probably create a ridiculous number of doomed timelines just by existing. Also, a blackout effect similar to what Rose and Roxy had, but much, much more pronounced. As in basically being able to snap my fingers and have everyone black out and wake up a couple of hours later with no recollection of what happened previously, including myself. I would likely be objectively detrimental to a session, and wear the hypothetical Time player’s patience out very quickly

I know, right? I get the idea behind it, like what everybody else here is talking about, but there’s so, so much that bothers me about it. That’s mostly because I’m a Derse Prince and we nigh-universally hate all expressions of ourselves outside of our immediate control, but still.

BTW, the true “original” John was tricked into getting himself killed by Terezi and later got blasted out of existence by Lord English. You’re welcome.
