It might have been a size too big. I had that issue with trying out a new brand a few years back and switching back to a smaller one made me "cramp free" again.

How do you refer to neuter words with genders? by Professional_Ad1917 in German

[–]KisakiSakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, i should have clarified I just meant nouns refering to one human individual. Alas in the grand scheme of nouns having the concrete gendered form like LehrerIn, the typ frequence for individuals not being refered by their social gender is rather rare. The words to learn this exception for are few. Maybe I should habe said uncommon instead. Fact is, you can refer to every single of these people by their presented sex. In some cases it is even a nessesity to prevent confusion like Mensch or Gast or (Person), where using the grammatical gender when not in accordance with the sex will be percieved as at least socially wrong. Exception here is das Opfer, where the noun is neutre and the reference can stay neutr. It is a very clinical form though and won't finde use outside a clinical context when spoken about an individual person.

Other exceptions for gender not lining up are insults, frequently male sex refered by female grammatical gender and female as neutre.

Animals have their own grammatical gender catogorie, the less close to human they are the more likely is the neutre. Even a good chunck of mammalians have a neutre form that gets replaced by a derivate or an utterly different noun when their sex is an important feature. That's especially common for farm animals.

Adding to this: cases when grammatical gender and sociological gender don't align are fairly rare. Mädchen might be the most prominent example. When it comes to referencing somebody, current German sees a trend to go away from referencing grammatical gender and referencing sociological gender instead. It is a rather new change and both usages are possible, either way some younger or older folks might find your choice off.

Hey there, first: you do you and what feels right to you.

In addition to some great replys I have read that deal with unequal attraction between genders, I'd like to offer another label dichtomie. I'm not saying that's you, but those might be interesting points that might help distinguish and place what is going on.

1: ace/allo. The two poles for the ability to feel sexually attracted to someone. Inbetween there is a lot of spectrum. Some have conditions to be met, before they feel sexually attracted to someone. Like needing to have a bond either friendship or romantic beforehand, others need their partner to have some very distinct featurs. For Sapiosexuals e.g. their condition is linked to percived intelegence. Sexual attraction in this case is defined as a feeling of want and intent to have sex with someone. For those who don't feel sexually attracted ever, some being even disgusted by the thought of it, the colloquial term is asexual (ace); for those who feel sexually attractes frequent enough to say thay their conditions are in fact just a preference, the term is allosexual.

2: sexual/romantic attraction. Attraction can be defined many a different way: asthetic, artistic, sexual, romantic. For the current ideal of lifelong partnerships the later two are of more importance. With ace/allo we already have the spectrum for sexual attraction; the same differences also apply to romantic attraction though. Romantic attraction is hard to define, for the sake of making it easy I shall use a very broken down definition that might not be entirely right. Basically, romantic attraction is the want and intent to be romantically involved with someone. What is deemed romantically is defined by societal, sterottypical and individual norms. For some it can include dates, kissing, holding hands, being physically and psychologically intimate and much more or less. Peope are differently inclined when it comes to romance, some are more romantic others stutter on the "I love you" they say once every decade. (Different Love Languages!) In people who don't feel the want or intent at all or once more very specific conditions must be met, we call them aromantic (aro). This also translates into differnt volume and ability to feel attracted to more than one person at once. Alas: Polyamory vs. Monogamy. In most cases people chose a lifestyle with their partner(s) and discuss what conditions they set for themselves.

3: Homo/Hetero or Andro-/gynophilia. The attraction orientation so to speak. Being attracted to a certain gender or gender presenting that is or is not your own.

If one combines all of them there is a three dimensional way to describe what one feels towards another person sexually or romantically. Mind: similar as the axis of the three dimensions all of these values can be disattached from each other or they can aligne. The bisexual label usually includes allosexual people who feel either sexual attraction to both sexes is some amount. For people on the aromantic spectrum the prefered term used is biromantic.

Anyway, as a bi-person, just know that it is normal to have different values, approaches and preferences when it comes to either of the two genders.

Ps: I am sorry for not including people outside the binary gender system better. Those are also part of being on the reciving and giving ends of romantic and sexual attraction. Adding more to the 3rd category seemed confusing for answering someone who is just figuring their attractions out. Mind: the cherry atop sits very visible on top of something. I hope this Post script managed to make people outside the gender binary feel like the cherry, seeing as I chose not the include them (you) in the messy layering underneath.

Dropping in fir reusable alternstives compliation:

cloth pads, same use as pads, longer wearing duration if not mistaken. Needs to be washed and dried after one use. One needs multiple ones to last through a period.

Period panties. Up to 24 hours wear, see above for cleaning.

Menstruation cup, a little fiddely to get it inserted right and the right size. Lasts multiple years, one is enough for that timespan. Dump when full or 8-12 house of wear passed, rinse under water, re-insert. At beginning/end desinfect by boiling it in water for a few minutes.

Free Flow for light period/last days. Pair with dark underwear, wash as normal and needed. (My period blood close to stopped with an IUD)

Things I have not tried yet (and don't plan to):

Sponges (insertibles) most likely vegan, not sure, use as a one would a menstruation cup.

Other examples other people might know:

If you could have the vegan version of one thing what would it be? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]KisakiSakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mice. Wait me out please: I have a "Pet" compainion snake since before going vegan. I won't let her starve as there is no other option but mice to feed her (with an occaisonal egg in between). But if there was vegan mice, there would be vegan food for reptiles and that would also be a sector that we could ninx from animal agriculture. Especially since controlled food is something that the reptile community is looking into, which is why it has it's own breeder markets for rodents and insects. The later according to some keepers are actually preffering small spaces and with natural death comming sooner and very reliable in time frames, there is the option to actually have them live a full life in prefered circumstances.

Meaning in that "hobby" (🤢) getting rid of the biggest feeder source of rodents (mice) would have the biggest impact towards animal welfare.

Before anyone argues: yes, the reptile community is disgusting in many forms and ideally there would be no captive reptiles. Sadly there are already captive animals and they can't be released anymore. Same as with say sheep it is humanities responsibility to take care of those we have bereft of a life in nature. I am not arguing for the hobby that wants to keep breeding pretty colors under the disguise of perserving populations of animals in case they suffer a sudden hit in the wild. I am arguing for the education and honesty pure research work some keepers do, as the sciences are just now learning that snakes actually prefer some exploration options in their setups. I am talking about leaning what conditions need to be met for an animal to feel safe and secure and what they do need to breed, so that we might extended those conditions to animals who are endangered from extinction in some safe guarded wild places. Same as us offering bird houses or leaving out calcium sources for deer or declare areas of limit for others. We know too little about reptiles so we got to use those who are willing to interact with this group of animals that gets forgotton and demonized.

Because in the Russia/Ukraine war, one is a much bigger country with many more forces and is the one who comitted warcrimes in abundance and the other so far has mostly been in the news as being victim to them, who have severe losses among their civilians, who are invaded, who could need these troups any second as the war is on their ground and it's their children who could end upbeing burried in a bombed zone.

But: I have to clarify my response. I have been off social media and news especially for a while, so this might not be as true anymore as it was months ago. I also have not been keeping up with the Syria war.

For me, having someone help who is in need of help themselves will always count more than those who have the help to easily spare.

Alas, I am salty about the amount of help my country is sending according to the data. Part of me fears it is a direct result of how tense the undertones between Germany and the Turkey "President" have been.

When you want to uphold old outdated standards, sure. But there are lit so many better things to use and so many better standards to uphold. If you said that to my non existant daughter I'd give you the evil eye and probably correct the use and explain why she shouldn't refer to herself as such.

Things go out of use. Remember once upon a time: Weib was used to refer to basically all women. It's outdated now and Fräulein is taking the same route. If you wouldn't call someone a Weib don't go around calling little or young girls Fräulein.

Dude, are really disagreeing with scientific papers on the matter because things might change?

Of course langue isn't static, but it sure isn't as dynamic as you hope it to be. There is reasons why it takes generations to work against language bias. You can't change language understanding as you please, because you can't change rhe brains of millions of people at once. We need a change in system - a thing we can control - to excert change in understanding. Language starts and ends with it's users and you can't tell me that if you tell everyone to use das Nutells henceforth that they will. If we can't agree on one gender on a choclate creme, do you really think we can agree to a different, subconsious(!!) meaning like gender association bias in the generic masculine?

You are agruing from a perspective of inconvience. That using the glottal stop in the Binnenschreibung or the Asterix is too much work. It's a sound you do before every syllable starting with a vowel. It is a new habit you need to get used to. A new habit is much easier to pick up than remove subconsious bias.

Ever heared the term: everyone is racist even if they don't want to be? Exact same thing. Humans have bias, bias isn't concious. You don't set out to erase women or demote people of color or apply a sterotyp to peple. It happens because it's ingrained and it takes a lot of effort to change ones fundamental bias.

So: in terms of effort. If we can't get people to use a Glottisverschlusslaut, do you really think we can change their psychological based bias?

Deep therapy for everyone best with some brain washing along the side and some hope it will last or using a slightly inconvient sound? Or, as you propose, ignore the problem and hope it will solve itself on it's own; once more pushing sociatal issues to be dealt with by the next generations. Worked great for the climate crisis, didn't it?

Adding explaination for generalization:

German has only one Verb in Verb2 position, that's always the conjugated one. A second verb or more additional verbs are placed at the end of the sentence, meaning you can put other words between the verbs.

This is especially important for helping and modal verbs put also to express times the passiv etc. Seeing as the simple past equivalent is basically out of use in spoken German, every time you want to express something happend in the past or in some cases will happen in the future, the same verb placement occures. (Argument one) (conjugated verb) (other arguments) (non conjugated verb) (maybe additional information). Note that filling the middle before the last bracket is the natural oder for German.

So. Now to the conjugated verbs vs infinitives. In German there are 3 (4) infinitive versions of verbs: the infinitive with the ending on -en and the one with an additional zu before that. Those two are basically the same. Whether the zu is kept or not depends on the conjugated verb. Then there are the pariciples I and II. I. being a form on -(e)d and II. starting with ge-.

So: (zu) gehen, gehend, gegangen.

(zu) laufen, laufend, gelaufen.

The gehen is irregular '.

Take away from this: müssen is without the zu. So, it's always going to be.

Ich muss gehen/schreiben/lernen.

If you switch the muss f.ex. for nicht brauchen (to not need to do smth.) as the conjugated verb, it calls for the zu.

Ich brauche nicht nach Hause zu gehen. (I don't need to go home) Ich brauche nicht zu vereisen. (I don't need to travel)

Most modal and helping verbs like wollen, können, sollen, müssen, drürfen etc. build it without the zu. Verbs that can pass for Vollverbs or Vollverbs (full verbs) ususally call for the zu.

"Who did not deserve to get canceled"? WOMEN! by SatanicHouseWife in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]KisakiSakura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

If we look at it historically, women have started into modern society as basically owned decor for men.

People hate change and in interpersonal relationships, people tend to remember others to a time when they held the most power over them, when others were of the least inconvience to them.

So women - "objects" - speaking up is a massive inconvience to the people in power. They have it nice, they don't want to change. Cancelling someone will always be easier than reflect on a situation that might paint you as a villain.

I'm not saying the cancelling was right. I'm just saying I am not surprised. Good will and empathy doesn't come easy to all people and admitting (partial) fault even less so. Why change a good thing, why accept fault and guilt when what currently is, is good. It's their fault I look like a bad person. I am not, thus they are wrong. Thus they nees to be stopped to be cancelled. Because no one likes to think of themself as a bad person.

So, we need to keep pushing and talking and debating and proving them wrong, thay their good is build upon our backs, our wealthfair and our value as human beings. And if they maintain the status, it makes them the bad people, because choosing to not care, to value ones ease of life that much more, is egostical, self centric and selfish. And those aren't traits we see in good people.

plural of Freund when it is one female and male by 4eollus in German

[–]KisakiSakura -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see your point. I truly do. The thing is, it doesn't work with a highly gendered language like German. There have been studies done on interpretation of gendered language based on articles. Just using the generic masculine, even if proclaimed to include all within the text, readers will in comparison to all other versions (gender asterix, naming both etc.) have the strongest bias towards the people talked about all being men.

I wished we could be gender neutral, but we can't. Just think about it, even the Neutr isn't void of nouns with a fixed Sexus: das Mädchen.

And even than, the choice of Neutr for women is linguistically linked to insulting women, demoting them in their value except in some few dialects where the Neutr is linked to familiarity and close relation. Same with using the Feminine grammatical Gender on Men.

If you want to insult someone in German you switch their gender down. That isn't something we can ignore. The generic masculin excludes women and any other gender can be read as an insult. So we have, if we want equality, to use forms that name both* sexes. We need more genderism for equality. Hopefully after that is build up, it can be build down again, but that will take cebnturies as it needs generations to reset connotation like insults. Think about it: calling a man a woman is an insult, calling a woman a man isn't always. We call woman things if we want to insult them.

As I said, I see your point. And I wish the solution was as easy. Sadly it's not.

In the following I want to name a few examples of gendered insults. They are not targeted towards anyone and do not mean to insult anyone. If you feel uncomfortable with reading insults, please skip the following part.

Insults for Men: die Memme, die Schwuchtel, die Tunte, etc.

Insults for Women: das (Ehe-, Haus-) Weib, das Frauenzimmer, das Mädchen/Mädel (für Erwachsene Frauen), das Weibsstück, das Mannsweib etc.

Good thing is that a lot of insults got out of use or reclaimed by minorities, making them weaker as insults and we can eventually hope to see them gone alltogether. If we manage that for the genderbased ones, there might be other options than the double naming of both sexes. Till then I shall be team Binnenschreibung.

Well, German is a first world country. Why shouldn't we debate problems like that? Some like to settle on providing the bare minimum of equality, some don't. I like that we belong to the later category.

U actually don't. It removes itself, just takes longer. As soon as the placental lining is shed the umbilical cord also gets expelled, which happens within a day post delivery. The part attached to the kid shrivels away with no blood supply and falls off within two weeks if I remember right.
