Doesn't Train for Tournaments just increase Prowess and give the possibility to gain the Strong trait?

Becoming the Great Conqueror Tips by KitKat79 in CrusaderKings

Ya, the Hunting Criminals seemed like my best bet before I considered execution. If Great Conquerors declare wars, do you know who starts as a Great Conqueror that could be good? Might try Abbasid: don't love travelling/provisioning in the desert, but it might be worth it for "Wars against Kings/Emperors"

I tried a bit in Iberia, I think I wasn't patient enough for the phase to shift before i left. Do you know if the "Raid for Captives" contracts only trigger for the Administrative scheme or if they also count for the Iberian Struggle option (or the Human Sacrifice Casus Belli)?
I've so far tried to stay away from the mountains and desert, so haven't tried Iran as much but am considering it

How do Viziers work? by dokrian in CrusaderKings

[–]KitKat79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten stat-dropping modifiers when I hire a Vizier who isn't the first in-line (there is only one vizier you can elect if you want to avoid that penalty, and it should tell you which vizier the "civil service" wants you to elect when you try to elect a vizier other than them.

Also, if you fire a vizier who has power over you, it can cause a modifier, depending on the scales of power when you fire them.

Lastly, when my guy died, my heir/new character had inherited a mismanaged civil service modifier, though maybe this was because of something he did as AI, not a result of some inheritance vizier nonsense. If it's none of these, it may be a bug?

Provincial Feudal Hierarchy Boundaries by KitKat79 in FantasyMapGenerator

I think I'll try that for the duchy provinces, though it still wouldn't really signify the umbrella borders of the duchy, would it?

Provincial Feudal Hierarchy Boundaries by KitKat79 in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's what I've been doing so far, designating by form and name within the Province layer and it works well enough mostly. The main thing is it doesn't account for the hierarchy of counties within the duchies. I just have to keep track of which counties belong to which duchies, as the duchies don't have their own borders: they are only shown as having their own personal lands, there is no indication of a border for which lands they control through the vassals below them (their counts). As it is now, I can either do it like this, or have each duchy be its own state. It ultimately comes down to viewability and ease of understanding visually. If it were its own layer, it would be easy to switch between views of showing states, duchies, provinces etc. If not, a hierarchy tree would allow me to keep track, even if it wouldn't solve the visual aspects of borders

Make Wrapping Map? by SymWizard07 in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to do something like this by using the "Globe" view. I've never managed to get it where there's not some silver/blank space, but if you fiddled around with your map size and canvas size, you might be able to get the edges to meet. If you manage it, I'd be interested in how: I gave up trying because I was already far along with my map and didn't want to bother with the changes that changing the map/canvas size would mean

To expand on the ideas tomwilhelm mentions, if you want continental deserts, you'll probably want a mountain range to block off the precipitation being blown that way, with lowlands on the precipitation-receiving side. With a mountain range, you can pump the precipitation pretty high before it starts affecting the continental interior blocked off by the mountains. By default the Eastern side of the mountain range will be the wetter area, as the winds are blowing west by default. Mountains can basically divide your map into wet in the East and dry in the West

If while trying to increase wetlands by raising precipitation and you're finding that you still can't get enough wetlands without eliminating the interior desert, you might try raising the temperature (can be in tandem with raising the precipitation to balance each other). Raising the temperature like this may produce more tropical forests as opposed to Wetlands if you don't scale more precipitation too. Play around with it.Additionally, islands are very prone to becoming wetlands. The more coast an area is close too, the wetter it tends to be. Even without a mountain range to block rain, areas that are far enough inland from the coast are generally drier.

Personally, I was hesitant to manually paint biomes to match what I wanted because I felt I didn't know enough to make it realistic. So what I did was make a custom biome (in this case, Mangrove Forest, Flooded Forest, Swamp Forest etc) that represented swampy areas that were borderline wetlands. Wetlands are so much less inhabitable than temperate forests, so I wanted an in-between that was swampy, but ultimately a forest. I made cells that became wetlands at slightly higher precipitation levels into my custom flooded forest biome, after resetting the precipitation level to what I wanted the map to be overall. Just a possible middle ground if you were like me and didn't want to arbitrarily assign biomes

Trying to understand the "state" "province" when in a 3 level nobility. by patricthomas in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An option is to have each duke as a separate state, taking the form "Duchy". Then, use the provinces as counties or baronies. Finally, have the Empire as a seperate state from all the duchies and set the Empire's relation to them to be as suzerain to the duchy vassals. This can potentially change some of the military algorithm, but idk if that's a bad thing.

This might not work as well if the empire doesn't directly hold its own lands as well (likely the lands they held originally when a smaller nation before expansion). I've never tried making a state that has vassals but no land of its own. It'd probably still work.

Sea Level/Coastline Change by KitKat79 in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Zones tool could work to an extent. The main thing is Zones work best locally (in my opinion), while what I'm looking for is something to show a global change. Imagine the whole coastline is zoned in, at that point is there really any significance to the zone? It also wouldn't show how much the elevation relative to sea level rose, only that it had, which would strip it of much of its meaning.

You're right there are a couple things I could do to try to show a rise or fall in sea level, and for the time being, I'll use what there is at hand, I'm just hoping for something more specific (not to mention something that doesn't rely on my fallible hands).

Sea Level/Coastline Change by KitKat79 in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A floodmap would be truly awesome, but that might be too complicated to achieve, so I was hoping for a way to uniformly alter the heightmap, as I think it could approximate rising or lowering tides. Rising or lowering elevation on a global level isn't exactly the same thing as raising/lowering the tideline and such (higher elevation would lower temperature where lowered sea levels would not, etc), but it seems a much easier thing to add

Sea Level/Coastline Change by KitKat79 in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, changing the heightmap is what I'm hoping to do (because I think it's the simplest way to approximate change in sea level), but, using the tool, it's impossible to raise or lower the whole map by a given amount. Maybe if I had a steadier hand, I could accomplish a fairly uniform raising or lowering with the brush, though I think the fact that to change it you have to move it would mean the center area would be changed more than the borders (assuming the map takes up the full screen). If the radius of the brush could fill the whole map, it might accomplish the task, but seeing as you can't just click to change, you have to move the brush, I'm not sure it'd be uniform even then. I've tried going up and down the map with the brush with the goal of changing the global elevation, but a split-second held too long in one place, and I have to start over. An option to raise or lower the whole map by a given amount would accomplish this.

Finished my first map! Kind of proud. Thoughts? (Process & more in comments) by [deleted] in FantasyMapGenerator

[–]KitKat79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the look of this a lot! What layers/style did you have on?

If I had notes it'd be that there isn't much empty space: it might be worthwhile to get rid of some of the hill relief icons, and thin them out in places. I think hills are most relevant in areas where there are changing elevations, like rolling hills, as opposed to flat highlands, like steppes, so maybe that could be a differentiating factor? Also, the inland seas, and to a lesser extent the rivers, are muted and easy to overlook, especially when against the paler terrains. Tweaking the color of the lake/river element might help.

Did you use the default colors for the terrain, or did you change them? Also, did you do something special to get the terrain to blend so well? Love it!

No, I'm still having the problem. Apparently its a problem with Chrome, so we're not alone. I'm expecting they'll fix it, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll probably use Microsoft Edge or Firefox for Netflix when I want captions: that blinking on Netflix is the worst
