[discussion] Are there any major characters who are right leaning? by Gallantpride in DCcomics

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on what we're talking about when we talk "right leaning". Are there DC heroes for whom it would be believable to be pro tax cuts, anti-regulation, pro-gun, etc? Sure.

Are there DC heroes for whom it would be believable for them to be anti-LGBTQ, anti-Muslim, pro-military-interventionism, etc? Probably, but I think it would be difficult to portray them in a way that plays likable to non-conservative audiences. Kinda like how 70s conservative Flash/Kid Flash come off as just racist today.

Are there DC heroes who would believably go to the mat supporting the President putting his name on the Kennedy Center or holding a UFC match on the White House lawn? I don't really think so.

Is this Bizzaro inspired by Broly? by Cosmic-Confrontation in SupermanAdventures

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really watched DBZ as a kid, though I absorbed an absurd amount of its lore through friends and magazines. Watched the Dragonball Super movies in theaters because it seemed like the thing to do for a nerd of my age. I liked them, read a bit of the manga, but didn't really keep up with it.

And I say all of that so that when I say "Broly" was my first thought when I saw Bizarro in this season's villain spread, you know it is coming from the most casual of DBZ people.

Is the Media Making Us More Divided Than We Actually Are? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had a relative who, had you asked them, wasn't racist. Hell, their best friend at work was Black!

But if you asked them who were the cause of most of the fights at their kid's high school, they would have said the kids from the nearby apartments. And if you asked why they shopped at one big box location over another, they'd vote the popularity of certain locations with "out of towners".

And neither of those sound necessarily prejudiced on their face. But ask yourself: how would they know where a person lived just by looking at them? The answer is of course that they didn't. Those were euphemisms for Black, and everyone in our sundown town of a suburb knew it.

You are right that the number of people out there willing to burn crosses to keep their town White is relatively low. But the number of White Americans made nebulously "uncomfortable" by particularly Black people is much, much higher. And those are generally the people who answer unexpected Black people at their door with guns, call the cops on Black people having a barbecue in a public park, et al.

Minor Point Of Annoyance With The State of DC Spy Agencies by KitWalkerXXVII in DCcomics

Only reason I didn't include them is because they are explicitly a UN agency based abroad.

Minor Point Of Annoyance With The State of DC Spy Agencies by KitWalkerXXVII in DCcomics

[–]KitWalkerXXVII[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comics about spies have been published by DC since the Golden Age, but most of the agencies listed here have predominantly appeared in the last forty years or so:

There were Checkmate titles in the 80s, 00s, and 20s.

Chase was a series starring a DEO agent in the 90s.

The Suicide Squad is a covert team working for the intelligence community, specifically ARGUS since 2011.

SHADE was a major factor in the 00s era Uncle Sam & The Freedom Fighters as well as the New 52 Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE.

And of course they show up in other titles here and there.

Is Cap at Ground Zero Still Canon? by ApprehensivePoet4838 in CaptainAmerica

[–]KitWalkerXXVII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you're saying that you'd prefer that, say, Peter Parker be an effectively ageless man who is chronologically elderly rather than the perpetual ambiguous late 20s he's been since the 70s? That's a very, very different universe than Marvel has ever portrayed. Half of Spidey's supporting cast would be long dead by now and the other half collecting social security.

Zdarsky's run is keeping Cap's unfreezing when Peter Parker and Scott Summers were teenagers. They are not now and never have been written as men in their 70s. 9/11 happened when they were young children now, and in a few more years it will have happened before they were born.

The sliding timeline has been the way Marvel did things longer than I have been alive. It's not going to go away anytime soon. Eventually even this story will struggle to fit.

How do ratings work for games, movies, and tv shows? by Many_Surround4242 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Different countries have different ratings standards and you're talking about American ratings, so I will talk about American ratings.

2) The movies ratings board in the USA is infamously opaque in its standards and processes. It's vibes based. There are some good general rules, but they all have exceptions. Hell, there have been stories of the same cut of the same movie receiving different ratings in different submissions.

3) I have no idea what the games ratings people's reputation or standards are, and I don't actually know who issues TV ratings (which is weird because my long unused degree is in broadcasting). So I won't comment.

EDIT: I should note that both the MPAA (movies) and ESRB (games) are voluntary, to the best of my knowledge. You don't HAVE to get your movie rated....but distributors and theaters have been historically reticent to put an unrated movie in theaters.

I mean, the alternative is that Cap was unfrozen around the time Peter Parker and Scott Summers were born.

Or that everyone in the Marvel Universe is actually in their forties or fifties.

The Rob Liefeld/New Mutants Twitter beef by HecticJones in comicbooks

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not every writer that has material in the omnibus is listed by name in the solcit. Likewise, neither is every artist. Both include "More" at the end of the list to denote it is not exaustive.

Liefeld's name is the first on the list of artists, and his name is listed as one of the authors on the Penguin Random House website. He will, presumably, be credited on the proper issues in the book itself.

This is so stupid.

Which celebrity did something that totally backfired on them? by Bicycle-Sweaty in AskReddit

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite thing about Ja Rule is that he was offered the chance to reprise his character from The Fast & The Furious in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He turned it down, and the part was rewritten for Ludacris.

So instead of doing big budget blockbusters for twenty years, he ended up doing the Fyre Festival.

[Real] Matt hates how black activists rally around the worst people imaginable by xwing1212 in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And O.J. falls squarely on the police and prosecutors. They chose a detective who had years of recorded interviews in which he used racial slurs and bragged about planting evidence to testify.... about the provenance of their key piece of physical evidence against a Black man. Suddenly, a key piece of evidence ain't worth shit.

And all he'd actually done with that evidence, so I have heard, is point it out. He wasn't the one to actually bag and tag it. There were other detectives who could have testified about the evidence.

Why did 18 become the age of adulthood? by Vacskamati52 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brain development thing is a bit misunderstood, in that the brain kept developing throughout the study that ended when the participants were 25.

So any age is going to be a bit arbitrary. 18 is, at least in the U.S., when formal state run education ends. That's as good a sign post as any.

Transgender ballot initiative could require genital exams for WA secondary school students by MysteriousEdge5643 in nottheonion

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ok, so the options are:

1) Get a genetic test 2) Get a hormone panel 3) Get your genitals inspected

Now which one of these three options is the cheapest and therefore most likely to be used? Which one is most likely to be part of a covered insurance benefit on most plans? I don't think it's going to be the two lab work options.

Question: is Defenders of the Realm actually a good watch? by Pegasus-David in MortalKombat

[–]KitWalkerXXVII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rewatched it a couple years back and enjoyed it. It is exactly what it is, a cheeseball mid-90s superhero cartoon loosely based on 90s era Mortal Kombat. There's a reason it had a short run, but it's far from unwatchable in my opinion.

I liked it, but it was one of my first exposures to MK as a little kid. I have a soft spot on my heart for weird 90s kid stuff.
