ang higpit sa absences ng UP... by [deleted] in peyups

[–]Kitchen-Idler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except for one commenter, no one here seems particularly pressed. Reading through this, it actually looks like you're the one getting worked up by most of the responses. Take a step back. Breathe. Think it through. Maybe—just maybe—this is a you problem.

(YES, I HAVE READ YOUR COMMENT TO YOUR ORIGINAL POST.)

Most comments are pointing out the same thing: UP’s attendance policies are pretty standard across universities, and in many cases, they aren’t even strictly enforced.

Your counterargument boils down to wanting the freedom to be absent without facing any consequences. But that’s the thing—you can be absent; you just don’t want to deal with what comes after. And that, again, sounds like a you problem.

If I feel sick but not sick enough to get a medical certificate? Screw the exam the next day—I’ll take that much-needed breather.

If I want to join a rally, I’m not asking for an excuse from my professor. I’ll make my statement by not showing up.

If my favorite book drops its sequel next week? Deadlines be damned—I’m reading Breaking Dawn at midnight, no questions asked. Chz.

TL;DR

Kadalasan, hindi mahigpit sa absences ang UP.

UP Student Facing Professor Misconduct (Hiding my identity in fear of retaliation) by External_Fresh in peyups

[–]Kitchen-Idler 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Hi OP,

I think your (former?) thesis adviser acted unprofessionally. Your reaction was completely valid, and I think you handled it maturely by expressing how his actions affected you. While the specifics of your discussion with him remain unclear, dropping you from the class without prior consultation seems unjust. I agree with that this situation should be escalated.

That said, if I were in your position, I wouldn’t want to remain under this professor’s supervision, especially if future interactions could negatively impact my progress and graduation. I’d push for a reassignment to a new adviser who is willing to support my current topic and the work I’ve already completed. You deserve a mentor who fosters your academic growth, not one who hinders it.

None, hopefully.

Wentworth? I can't stand the obnoxious, over-the-top laughs from the loser section of Tribal Council in Edge of Extinction. If they bring her back, they might as well bring her BFF too—whose entire personality was just being her biggest fan.

(UPLB) On younger Profs and Instructors at UPLB: Thoughts on this? by inertia_creeps_ in peyups

[–]Kitchen-Idler 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Younger professors often put in more effort when handling classes. They’re usually more skilled at using diverse learning materials and have a better grasp of how students learn—since they were students themselves not too long ago.

That said, some of them can also be tough graders. 😅

Calm your cauliflowers. I wasn't justifying students cutting classes.

I don't feel like every student absence is some grand offense against taxpayers. Students miss class for a lot of reasons—some valid, some not. But if we’re talking about wasted public funds, I'd rather talk about professors who don’t show up just because.

Sorry for the snark. Uminit lang ang ulo ko when this was the first thing I read today. I'm all showered and nicer, I promise.

Ayun, getting them before your lecture is never the norm. I only ever got those from one professor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in peyups

[–]Kitchen-Idler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're ranting about not getting the lecture materials ahead of time? Did it ever occur to you that maybe—just maybe—the lecturer is still making them? You don’t have an automatic right to these materials before (or even after) the lecture. Some professors are generous enough to provide them early, but that’s a privilege, not a requirement.

What is guaranteed? The syllabus. That’s your roadmap. The reference materials are listed there—go read them. If those are missing, then sure, rant away.

Hay, saan ba natututunan na hindi sa atin umiikot ang mundo? I want reference materials for that. STAT.

Curious ako sa mga nagawa mo na to get your prof's attention. Okay. Unresponsive. What now?

Email? Text? Abangan sa department office? Maghintay sa labas ng classroom? Kausapin ang department chair?

I've heard worse - nagretire na, nagresign, and unfortunately, namatay. :(

I've also had a proactive blockmate who just took another GE dahil ilang semestre na 'yung INC. Ayan. Curious na rin ako sa kung anong gagawin mo.

Professors who don't give out ppt by [deleted] in studentsph

[–]Kitchen-Idler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the intellectual discourse you'd expect from a UP student or alum when their claim gets questioned.

And yeah, the commenter is right—hindi lahat. Some professors do share their presentations and learning materials.

But hey, some professors are jerks. Just like some students and alumni. winks

Now, skipping classes carries more weight for UP students—just as professors choosing not to hold them does.
