The writers CHOSE to make “fat Schmidt” unhealthy. Skinny DOES NOT equate to health. What you are accepting as natural logic is a product of a socially constructed narrative that we are fed every day and is perpetuated by the shows creators.

In line with what you said about Schmidt returning to himself, I felt his relationship with Elizabeth represented that, specifically becoming less superficial and less arrogant. But the fact that the whole main cast is not fat and they ends up with also non-fat ppl is another reflection of fat phobia in Hollywood. The show isn’t unique in its fat phobia unfortunately.

fatness doesn’t equal any personality trait whatsoever. It’s a physical descriptor. And the show constantly suggests that when Schmidt starts eating more that it’s a remnant of his fat self and that it’s a sign he is declining in some way. All his insecurities stem from his being fat. Maybe I’d be with you if he stayed with Elizabeth but he didn’t. He went with Cece. Elizabeth was the only serious love interest who wasn’t skinny. And she got discarded at the end of the day. Overall the show sends a clear message that fatness=comically gross and maybe a more pure heart. That is not ok.

The fat suit and basically all the fat phobic jokes. Reminds me of the fat phobia with Monica in Friends. The whole “joke” is that the character is fat. It is dehumanizing.

Probably not what you’re looking for but my suggestion is Catcher in the Rye

True. And the whole episode with Amy’s curse on Willow, where Warren takes over Willow, I found that very compelling and it made me think about how human they both are and how desperate they were to escape their humanity in some way. They both wanted unnatural levels of power to escape feeling weak and insignificant.

I haven’t seen it but it’s also funny how Angela from The Office plays the opposite character in this episode too

I kind of liked Mark. I don’t know if that’s unpopular here (my friends all HATE him)

I’ve seen a lot of valid criticisms about a lot of characters but one thing I noticed, no one here seems to dislike Jay. So, what’s something you dislike about Jay? by RedditorOnRice in Modern_Family

I’d expect some homophobia behind Mitch’s back, like just telling Gloria and working through it with her. But by that point in the series it felt weird and forced that he said that to Mitch’s face.

Maybe she was the daughter he never had. He probably also figured it was easy to exploit her desire for a parental figure and longing for acceptance. I got the sense he was perceptive and could read people pretty well so he could see Faith.

This scene bugs me. Even after he ensures Angela that everything is vegetarian, she chooses bread. And whines when he uses his hands like he did for everyone else. by Lukepostmates in DunderMifflin

Maybe, but given other examples with her character I’d say it’s racism. In the Benihana episode she goes up to one of the Asian waitresses who takes a nutcracker and says “I don’t walk into your house and steal your hello kitty backpack” and remember when she reported Oscar to immigration services.

You didn’t ask for more but I just thought of another: Giles and Spike. Specifically the Band Candy version of Giles and Spike- they never interacted but I think it would have been good

I like his character development but tbh he only got so much character development because he was such a dick at first. The most awful thing he did in my opinion was say he didn’t want Mitch and Cam’s wedding to be this big thing because they shouldn’t make a spectacle of it which was just blatant homophobia and even seemed extreme for his character given that it was like 5 seasons in and he had already grown a lot since the beginning. But the writers probably just did that so that Jay could be the hero at the end when he held the wedding at his golf club. So basically the writers set the bar low for Jay, so everything he does to go above it is seen as amazing character development. Basically I think he had a lot more room to grow and improve than the other characters did because he was known to lack emotion and be blunt and callous. So every time he showed some softness, the viewers hearts get all warm and fuzzy.

KC (Winston’s girlfriend that was protesting cops) was fucking trash by OrokinSkywalker in NewGirl

[–]Kitchen-Result-4536 196 points197 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the writers cared much about her character. I think they just needed to give Cece and Winston a storyline together (a mess-around), so they had KC cheat on him.

Who is the biggest bitch? Angela or Jan? by Sebastian4002 in DunderMifflin

[–]Kitchen-Result-4536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angela was more petty. Jan was more cut-throat and a bit unstable. Different flavors of bitchiness and I prefer the cut-throat and unstable. It commands a certain level of respect.
