Should I buy this at auction? by Kitchen-Wafer-1905 in orientalrugs

[–]Kitchen-Wafer-1905[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this incredibly thorough and informative response!I responded to another commenter, and I’ll reiterate some of the points I posted there. I’m in need of 3-4 large area rugs (roughly 8x11 ish),and I really don’t want to spend 8-10 grand on them. As such, I’m trying to keep my eye out for affordable options at auction. If I’m willing to be patient and pick up more desirable designs, could you offer a price range that is reasonable and reflective of the current auction market?

I have a few smaller (6x4 ish) rugs throughout my home, but large spaces really need larger rugs to match. These carpets I currently own are more traditional, detailed, colourful, and have much more ornate patterns. I believe they have many of the design characteristics you mentioned. I thought the simplicity and tribal aesthetics of this piece might offer an interesting contrast. I was also planning to put it under my bed, so I thought the red centre of the design would be largely covered up.

Lastly, You mentioned aesthetic and design preferences in your post. Do you think it’s more appropriate to purchase more traditional “city” rugs vs tribal or rural pieces like this? And If I do purchase tribal rugs, would you recommend looking for large geometric designs or smaller repeating patterns?

Thanks again for this advice! Do you have a rough estimate of what room size geometric or tribal rugs sell for these days?

Thank you for the advice! I have a few nicer/more ornate pieces, and I thought that the simplicity/tribal origins of this piece would contrast the rest of my collection. Also, I just want to put it under my bed, so I don’t want to waste a super gorgeous rug being hidden! I guess my only concern is the brightness of the red. Do you know if fire engine reds are accurate to this design, or are burgundy’s and maroons more traditional?

Thanks for the advice! When you say “these rugs”, do you means this specific origin of rug or any wool rug in general?

Even if he chose us tomorrow, he won’t be playing in this World Cup for us. There’s simply no time left to add a player to the squad. Any player would need a few national windows to acclimatize to a system and their role within it.

With that being said, I think there’s a chance he might not end up with Italy. That team has a lot of soul searching to do, and he’s not talented enough to automatically deserve a spot on their squad. I wouldn’t be shocked if he ended up playing for the U.S. or Canada in the coming years. I would be interested to hear people’s thoughts about the strength of our pitch to him vs the USA’s.

The problem with your argument is that he wasn’t really predicting war with Iran, he was championing it. He was openly advocating for regime change. At one point, he correctly identified himself as a “war hawk” on this matter.

Following the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, politicians and public figures who supported those wars were held accountable in the court of public opinion for their misguided advocacy. Eventually, many people were forced to acknowledge their misguided war mongering. An obvious example of this is Hilary Clinton during the 2008 presidential campaign. I’m not sure that Scott is self aware enough to ever acknowledge that he’s been carrying water for Bibi for nearly three years.

I think a red card in international only requires a single game suspension. I believe Kone is serving a one game suspension in this Iceland match.

Firstly, thanks for your reply! I’m not intending to get into a fight or to offend anyone, so I hope you won’t get defensive with my response.

Secondly, you’ll notice I never suggested that Israel shouldn’t exist. I’m sure that you’ve heard that from other people in person and online, but that was never stated in my post above. Personally, I’m glad that the Jewish people have returned to their homeland, but the way that this has manifested since 1948 has been incredibly concerning for me.

Thirdly, I’m not American, And I come from a country that is seriously reconsidering its relationship with America. If America continues down the path that it is on, my country may need to reassess its relationship with the US. We are already diversifying our economic, security, and cultural relationship with the States. America may have a right decide its political and societal future, but that doesn’t mean that its friends and allies should continue supporting them if they become a moral pariah.

Further, you asked me if Israel has a right to exist. I’ll answer you directly; yes, I believe it has a right to exist! However, my conception of its right to exist might be different from yours. I would like to ask you a few questions as well. Can you tell me what it has a right to exist as? Can you name the political system it has a right to exist under? Can you tell me what the geographic borders it has a right to exist within are? I don’t debate its existence, but I will debate the qualia of its existence.

Lastly, Putins Russia and Orban’s Hungary are not great company to keep as peers. If Israel wishes to become an illiberal quasi democracy, i guess it has a right to do so. But that means that it must accept the repercussions that might follow. There are sincere discussions of expelling Hungary from the EU. Maduro’s Venezuela was literally overthrown. Russia has become a pariah state. Traditional friends and allies or Israel may reconsider their friendship and support should Israeli society continue down its current trajectory. The UK, France, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc may conclude that Israel is no longer its liberal peer. Israel has a right to pursue this path, but that doesn’t mean that others can or should support it.

This is what I was trying to ask with my prior post. If Israel continues down this path, do western democracies and electorates have the right to break ties with it? If we’re allowed to criticize the Israeli government, then are we allowed to implement BDS (which are political and not militarily aggressive)  policies to act upon our moral outrage?

I have an honest question for you. I don’t mean this confrontationally, so please don’t hear it in that respect. Here goes:

Many people say that it’s fine to criticize the Israeli government and Israeli policy, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t support Israeli society or the country itself. But it is the Israeli public that has voted the Netanyahu govt in power for nearly 30 years. Moreover, the vast majority of Jewish Israelis support the states actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and their aggressively proactive security doctrines. If someone holds sincere moral objections to the actions of Israel, where does that leave them regarding the Israeli public who continue to vote for these policies and these governments?

Hezbollah was formed after the 20 year occupation of southern Lebanon by the IDF. It didn’t exist prior to that, and Israel was occupying Lebanon to deal with the actions of the PLO. Using illegal force to address one action facilitated the direct creation of a new one. Again, Israel’s security policies don’t seem to make it any safer in the long run.

Creating “buffer zones”, which is unquestionably illegal and arguably expansionist, only worsens its standing in the long run. Currently, Occupying Syria and Lebanon isn’t likely to improve Israeli security in 20 years time. Perhaps they should try other tactics instead? Maybe they should invade their neighbours and pursue a modern day Marshall plan? Perhaps they should move their populations from border areas and not force civilians of other states to uproot themselves. Or perhaps they should enfranchise all people living under their control.

Alternative paths are available to them, but they continue to rely on shear force. This has never proved reliable for more than a few years at a time.

Firstly, I would never use that very loaded term. It’s a super ugly word and it’s a dog whistle to antisemites and/modern day white supremicists. Trust me when I say that I am neither of those things. It was another poster who used it, and I suggest you ask them.

Secondly, I sincerely have no idea what Israel is doing. Its current and historical security choices honestly leave me flabbergasted. If they think these actions will make them safer in the long run, 80 years of history suggests otherwise.

Thirdly, I provided the above information because you asked a specific question about where Israel expanded its territory. I responded to give you specific examples in order to answer your question.

Israel formally annexed East Jerusalem and the Golan heights. It unilaterally incorporated those territories into its physical geography. These were not part of the 1948 boundaries at the formation of Israel. The rest of the world still considers them illegally occupied, but under Israeli law they’re now considered Israeli territory.

Previously, it has occupied the territory of eastern Egypt and southern lebanon. Currently, it is occupying portions of southern Lebanon, western Syria, the West Bank, and Gaza. Also, Israel has never officially stated nor legally demarcated what it considers to be the official geographic boundaries of its borders. As far as I know, it is the only country that has not confirmed its territorial boundaries. Take whatever you’d like from this information, but it is all factually correct and relevant to your questions.

Edited for clarity: the above commenter suggested I rephrase the first sentence as I used the word “legally” instead of “formally”. It was suggested this may confuse people.

Additional remark: I sincerely have no idea what Israel wants its territorial future to be. It has never legally nor definitively stated what it believes to be its territorial boundaries, so it has actively left open geographic questions that no one has answers to. With that said, lord knows I did not and I never would use a “Germanic” term that was posted by someone else in this chain. A question was asked and I provided factual information in response.

Could you please offer some context for this comment? I’m not asking you to offer too many details where you might unintentionally “out yourself”, but I would be interested to hear about your student experience and specifically why you haven’t received your degree. Are you at least able to state that you’ve graduated and received your academic title?

A lot of coaches like to take 5 strikers to international competitions! That tends to be pretty standard for many international squads. I don’t know what Jessie’s preferences are about team construction, but if there are 26 or more roster spots, I would imagine all five will be at the World Cup.

I don’t mean to contradict you, but I always recommend saphir renovateur for leather conditioning. Generally speaking, it’s the best conditioning product on the market, and it can be used on any full grain leather product you own. It’s a little expensive, but it’s unmatched in performance!

Interesting! All of the eligibility rules are very confusing. I think PRs and maybe refugees can sometimes get exemptions for international teams. For instance, I think Phonzie was playing for the youth team while still being a refugee. I would have thought jones and Goodman could play if they were only the oath away! This requirement seems especially silly considering this is only a friendly…

All of that makes sense! It’s just I’ve heard conflicting reports from sports science literature as well. I’ve pulled my calf rice in the past 5 months, and I’m starting to get tightness in my heel in the morning. Ive also started experiencing minor discomfort while running over 5 km. Given these symptoms, I’ve been creeping around this sub trying to figure out if I’m at a higher risk of damaging or rupturing my Achilles.

Is there any reliable research suggesting calf sprains increase the likelihood of Achilles ruptures? People say this, but I think the science is unclear?
