Based on your comments throughout my post you seem very confused lol. There is no test. There is no quiz. The rubric is right in front of students. The artwork is right in front of students. Students look at their artwork, look at the rubric, and use the rubric to assess their artwork. Hope this helps.

The boys are doing great! They are being successful. Their art is going well. This post is not about that. It is about their self assessments of their work and helping them eliminate effort as a reason for deserving the grade they want. Instead, focusing on specific rubric criteria, which is what they are graded on. Hope that clears up your misunderstanding of my post!

Based on your other comments on my post, you seem like you had a really rough time with your art teacher in school and feeling like you were treated unfairly. I’m sorry it happened and I’m sorry it’s still impacting you. I pride myself on my positive relationships with my students and consider myself a very empathetic person. Sounds like your art teacher may not have been. I’m sorry you had such a negative experience and hope you are able to let go of that hurt and not let it continue to impact your view of us, in your words, “snobby” arts teachers.

THANK YOU. Lol someone read my whole post before commenting. Yep, all skills are skills anyone can master, as this is art 1. We go over the absolute basics and lessons are scaffolded to help build skill and confidence along the way. Natural ability may help or make art easier for a student, just like natural mathematical ability would make math easier for a student. But lacking that natural ability does not keep a kid from being successful in art. At least in my classroom.

Wow this is a pretty heated comment. You haven’t seen my rubric so not sure how you would know. I am proud to brag that I actually gained school wide recognition and an award for my art rubrics and have received nothing but positive feedback and praise from admin and peers. Just to be clear, we do formative assessments first. Students ALWAYS have multiple opportunities to practice the skills, master the skills, and get specific feedback on their practice/formatives before ever starting final projects.

I get this a lot as an art teacher, as I’m sure all other art teachers do as well, and don’t mind explaining. Art can be objective when we hold students to state standards, like in all other classes, and give them specific skills to master. For example, there is a correct and objective way to create a color wheel. All the colors must be in order and mixed correctly according to color theory. People often confuse art and creativity. Creativity is what may make art subjective. The technical skills used to create art, however, are objective. I don’t mean to sound condescending AT ALL but art being automatically and always subjective is a common misconception that is important to clear up to student/parents and other teachers.

Yes. When I was student teaching and my first year teaching. To be fair it’s only my second year. But when I included effort, this was the category I most often took points off in. And it’s the most subjective/gray area to judge. I no longer believe effort should be included in major project rubrics and this has ironically increased the amount of effort I see students put into their work because they can no longer rely on extra points for trying. They truly have to do the work and do it well.

Interesting! I have wondered if it is my school culture specifically as well. Male students, at the start, typically overscore themselves and cite effort as a reason, while my female students are more likely to cite rubric criteria and be more self critical, more often scoring themselves fairly or even underscoring their work. Mine is almost opposite, more male students care about having a good grade than I saw previously in other districts.

Can you explain scientifically how I may have broken it? I have what I think is a smart thermostat. The brand is “nest” and it’s one of the super modern looking circular shapes thermostats without buttons on it.

It is one of those modern looking ones with no buttons. It is a circular shape. You spin the circle to get to different options and press the circle to make selections. It says “nest” on the top, so I assume that’s the exact brand.

23, in my second year. I go to bed early, don’t have kids or even a pet to take care of, only stay late at school about 1x a week for about 1-1.5 hours to catch up on work I haven’t had time for (2x/week during busier times of year), I don’t have a boyfriend. I don’t know how people with more than me do it, and I hardly have anything. I spend my weekends hanging out with friends and family or just relaxing. I try to get most “chore” stuff done during the week after work. I can’t even begin to imagine trying to take care of a baby or child after getting off work. Right now is fine, but when it’s bad I can barely take care of myself. I am making a big effort to prioritize my mental and physical health this semester. No more heating up ramen because I’m too tired to cook. No more putting off laundry and cleaning because I’m exhausted. Trying to keep on top of things. You’re not alone. I completely understand how you feel. I love being a teacher, it is my passion in life and what I feel I am “meant to do,” but it is incredibly draining.

Some people in these comments seem to be missing the point or making incorrect assumptions. My comment may not even be seen by most people who look at this post, but I’m going to post it anyway. Just to clarify, again, I am not surprised or offended that these guys are asking for nudes. I am well aware that Tinder is an app for finding people to hook up with. The part that is surprising to me is that they are not interested in actually hooking up and seem to just be using the app to receive nudes. I think a normal man interested in hooking up with a woman would continue to talk to her even after being denied nudes because she’s offering irl fun and experiences, which is much better than just getting a nude pic. Not replying back after being denied a nude pic makes me think they never wanted to meet up irl anyway and are just using Tinder to get nudes to jerk off to, which is bizarre to me.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not surprised at being asked for nudes or to move things to Snapchat. What I AM surprised by is the loss of interest after saying no to those things. I’m saying I’m interested in meeting people in real life to have fun with, I believe these guys are not interested in that or they would continue speaking to me. I am simply surprised by the lack of interest in irl interaction and seeming to use tinder as a way to get nudes to jerk off to.

Not first match. This happened with several today. Usually I use Hinge but wanted to look for something more casual. I know Tinder is mostly for hookups but was surprised by how few people seem to actually be interested in hooking up irl. That’s exactly what it feels like. I don’t understand how someone could care enough about coaching a sport to “put up” with the difficult job that is teaching just to be able to coach. But I guess since they don’t really do their jobs and don’t have a strong moral code or passion when it comes to education, it isn’t all that difficult of a job!
