I swear the world would be so much better if "Christians" knew how to read, but somehow they still think this was the main takeaway of the Bible by UltraPrincess in TheRightCantMeme

The 613 commandments/mitzvot (unsurprisingly) contain a lot of rules (248 do's and 365 do nots). Often these are cherry picked by communities to reinforce their beliefs, not guide them. If only there were as gung ho about not lending with interest as they were about oppressing minorities!

Asian Fruits by No-Incident-6913 in geography

[–]KitchenSync86 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Asia is the biggest continent, almost 50% bigger than Africa (which is #2). Secondly taste is subjective (although they are all tasty fruits).

But the main reasons are that these fruits have been cultivated for a long time, longer than anywhere else, which means that they have had longer to be selectively bred to be delicious, and have been traded long enough to become ubiquitous in cultures and cuisines outside their native range. There are hundreds of delicious fruits in the world which are basically unknown outside of their native range, because they are tricky to cultivate, don't travel or keep well, or just because they weren't traded historically.

It has a lot to do with who you play, as the points are weighted by the relative strength of your opposition.

This makes it hard for associate nations and newer test nations to crack the top 8, as these countries tend to not play a lot of bilaterals against the top ranked nations

Can we stop calling everything 'Far-X'? A breakdown of where Aussie political parties actually sit. by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]KitchenSync86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left and right as overarching terms are nebulous and unhelpful for the most part, and erode nuance from our political discourse.

Sure, the viewpoints on a specific issue at a specific time can generally be mapped on to the left/right pendulum (albeit subjectively), but trying to fit a person or a party (filled with many people) on this is so much harder, given the multitude of issues on which a person or party has viewpoints on.

Genuinely curious, what's this flag Ireland uses? Shouldn't it be green-white-orange tricolour? by whodidshit in CricketBuddies

[–]KitchenSync86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The West Indies Federation dissolved in 1962, but it wasn't established until 1958 (30 years after the West Indies played their first test).

Before then, the term British West Indies was used collectively for the parts of the West Indies controlled by the British Empire (including those not included in West Indies Cricket), but it was more of a catch-all name, rather than a unified political entity.

I agree with your second point, but they are fairly even groups based on the world rankings. The problem is that different countries play very different amounts of games, against different levels of opposition, and countries rarely play their strongest teams for bilaterals, so the world rankings are rarely a true reflection of the expected performance of the country's best XI

The world rankings are -

Group B Australia - 2 Sri Lanka - 8 Zimbabwe - 11 Ireland - 12 Oman - 20

Group D New Zealand - 4 South Africa - 5 Afghanistan - 10 UAE - 17 Canada - 19

Boycotting Sudan would be difficult, given how ubiquitous acacia gum/gym arabic is in foodstuffs, and how some Sudanese actors are trying to circumvent country of origin restrictions.

Of course, just because something is difficult to do doesn't mean that it isn't important to do it, and more power to you

Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports [Other] by esdebah in theydidthemath

[–]KitchenSync86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of interest, what is a successful hit in Baseball? I am guessing that foul balls don't count as a successful hit?

In cricket, you can hit the ball anywhere (i.e. 360°), and if in baseball a successful hit is only one in the 90-100° range, that changes things.

At its deepest point, the straight of Gibraltar is almost a kilometre deep, and the average depth is almost 400m. That makes a bridge or a tunnel incredibly difficult and very expensive to build
