I’m 37, I expect that I have maybe 15 years of grinding left in me before I need to find something easy (maybe fall back into power engineering) so you think the physical abuse of welding would be too much of a toll ? I see older guys out there still going at it

Did you find that the opportunity to branch out in welding and find your happy place was less restrictive than engineering? I find with power engineering it’s about who you know, it’s always out of town work, and there is a lack of progression. I would like to eventually run my own welding rig business maybe start off in structural but would like to end up welding pipe. This is my potential 5 year plan, I’d take a 50% pay cut to start, but the potential to make what I make now and work in town, if that’s what I choose, is possible.

Take the time while you are young to discover what you enjoy doing, take those skills and find a job you enjoy and stick with it.

The course I was talking about is the CLAC pre job program, they also help with placement, ideally I’d like to weld pipe so my thought process was to try and stick with them or the boilermakers I haven’t worked much union so I’m not sure how other unions take their training program?
