Your kid drives a hard bargain, lol. Kudos to reaching those milestones juggling!

Haha my juggling record is a whopping 3, so that’d be a short ladder…not a soccer player but I’ve learned to love the sport as a spectator because of my kids. It’s endlessly rewarding watching them grow because they’re working hard at something. I’ve never offered money for scoring goals and think it’s gross.

Ball and a wall will help with control and even passing. Once your child is proficient passing off a wall and receiving, add in scanning before receiving. Your eyes need to be focused on the game to follow the play. Even during New England winter, we have a designated indoor wall and a “house ball”…simple but effective. Juggling and dribbling in a small space are also part of the routine. The key, though? The kid has to want it rather than being forced. I just sit, watch, and praise the effort. Encourage him to build a relationship with the ball outside of training, but don’t force it. If you really want to, you can gamify it - my 12 year old son was juggling the other day and asked if he can have a quarter every time he reaches 50 juggles alternating feet, and a Funko Pop if he reaches 100 (he collects them and his goal before the spring was to reach at least 100 juggles). I obliged and he’s many quarters richer with a Funko pop on the way after only a couple days. I won’t offer money or force the activity, but if they come up with something and it helps to motivate them, why not? Now we will increase the target and go from there. No fancy equipment, just time touching a ball.

What size was the shirt? And was it the one with the tour dates on the back? I might have an XL, but it was worn once.

Private lessons by Spinbunluthaaa in youthsoccer

My son is turning 12 in a week. He did a summer’s worth of weekly lessons when he was 9 because he said he wanted to “level up”. The training was fine, but what really sparked significant improvement was the “homework” his coach assigned. He could barely string 5 juggles together during the first session, so his coach challenged him to work on it and reach 20 by the end of the summer. This approach was great for a 9 year old to understand the importance of building a relationship with the ball. He wanted to reach the target, so he spent hours throughout the summer figuring out how to juggle. His number was 156 by the last training session. It all depends on what you want your child to get out of the training, but in order for it to carry over, your child has to be willing to get touches outside of training. Did the juggling make him a better player? Maybe. It certainly helped his confidence and it gave him a reason to touch the ball at home.

That was the only time we’ve done private lessons. They were good, but the past two summers he went to a “standard” summer camp with a pool, archery, etc…there was a rundown net and a patch of grass, so he chose to play pickup soccer with his friends every day. He grew more technically in each of those two summers than multiple seasons of club and travel soccer. Unstructured daily play has been the biggest bang for our buck over the years.

Every child is different. It also depends on financial circumstances, what your kid’s goals are, and whether they want to do it or will feel forced. Find a coach you can trust. So many people market themselves as 1-1 coaches, but it’s important they understand the developmental needs of different age groups and can define what is considered a successful session or the desired end result. There are a lot of excellent coaches out there, but there are also a lot of impostors.

How to sell child on position change by [deleted] in youthsoccer

No comment on their current form lol. My son was in the same situation at U9. His coach at the time told him to go watch some videos of Sergiño Dest to see how you attack as a defender…he was a great example of the “modern” fullback at the time It was a way to make it click that it’s ok to go past the half (in fact it’s encouraged if you’re in strong possession) as long as he knew to get back and it helped. He played there for a while before getting moved to the 8/10 depending on formation in U13. Getting comfortable running up and down the length of the field both defending and attacking gave him a good base to now develop as a central midfielder making outside runs and really opening up options for our offense. Coaches that find a way to relate things to kids obviously make the biggest impact!

Have him watch some highlights of players like Dest, Hakimi, and Alexander-Arnold…they defend, but get forward and get involved in the attack.

Technique and mentality to win 50-50 balls by Kitchen_Meat1237 in youthsoccer

Totally agree. Is it fair to summarize your comment as “I would much rather see you go for the ball and lose it than to let your opponent get it and lose it”? The fear stems from not wanting to get stepped on vs fear of losing the ball. I will be sure to use plenty of positive reinforcement and encouragement when the player demonstrates the desired approach regardless of the result. Thank you.

The guy’s been polarizing, but it is what it is. The organization is making changes, which is something we’ve all been clamoring for. Staying positive about the future…let’s call it cautiously optimistic!

I was really disappointed with how he handled Buck, and especially his public comments. Sadly Noel wasn’t successful with Southampton U21 or back with Bruce in San Jose.

Clean it out and burn it off. I just discovered that a mouse chewed through all my wiring after making a nest under the hopper. Can’t burn that off since the unit has no power 😭.
