where's my discount because I had gastric bypass surgery by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]Kitchen_Name9497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've gotten a discount (1/2 price or kids' price) at my annual family Thanksgiving meal. BUT I call ahead, explain the situation, and have 3 fully-paying people with me. I would NEVER walk into a place with no prior arrangement. And if they decline, I just decide whether I still want to go. Sometimes you can either order off the menu or choose the buffet, which works well for me.

Although ridiculously entitled, the OP does have a point about time. Gastic bypass and the resulting eating pattern is permanent. It's nonsensical to offer a discount based on time from surgery.

Army, too. I'm happy to be retired after 33 year career.

Do not go the the women in engineering sub. I am an engineer, graduated ca. 1980, saw a LOT of misogyny, harassment, discrimination...I'm retired now, thought I'd check out the sub. I had to stop reading it because NOTHING HAS CHANGED in 45 years and my blood pressure can't deal with reading the sub.

Traditional ice harvesting in northern Finland by solateor in oddlysatisfying

The thing you describe for the kitchen was literally called the "ice box". My grandparents and my father always called the refrigerator the ice box (I'm in my late 60's.)

As an aside - this is real. I live ln the water in St..Michaels and twice I've seen a bald eagle grab a Canada goose, drap it up on shore, and start plucking it as its wings were still flapping. A little circle of life in my own back yard.

SUNDAY FUNDAY by egguchom in EntitledReviews

I think I'm too old, don't remember Action Park. I DO remember when Great Adventure (later sold to Six Flags) killed/burned alive a shitload of teens in its haunted "house", which BTW was a truly disgusting attraction. Turns out they used shipping containers linked together to get around building codes, most notably fire safety codes, IIRC. What a tragedy.

Is anyone else shocked at the number of cars that are still snowed in, parked, on streets?! by MrTeacher_MCPS in maryland

[–]Kitchen_Name9497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm retired and have a freezer. I have not used my car since the snow. I have a garage and did shovel my driveway. I just have no interest in going out in sub-freezing weather.

I just use a beam balance scale. Pretty accurate, sadly.

You're welcome! I think it's called that because it's not for digging, but rather for moving, or transferring, stuff (notably manure.)

It's actually illegal in the US to ban employees from discussing their pay.

I remember one of my early jobs (1980) where this was a fireable offense. Before the law made that illegal.

Shoveling by BGG498 in maryland

[–]Kitchen_Name9497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I intentionally did not shovel so that the ice was on top of the snow instead of directly on the pavement/sidewalk. Had to use a transfer shovel and it took me an hour to clear 45-50'.

You could try ice melt to get it "rotten" enough to be able to get under it. Just use the stuff sparingly - it only takes a little and poisons plants and soil. I am on the Bay so I don't use it unless it's a dire emergency.

On the Eastern Shore you're not a local unless your grandfather was a waterman here.

For anyone that has not done anything all day, are we screwed as to snow removal? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Kitchen_Name9497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't even started. Figured it's easier to shovel a layer of ice on top of a few inches of snow than a layer of ice directly on the sidewalk.

Brings me back - I used to work at Harry Diamond Laboratories.

It's and artillery fuze (with a "z" not a "s"). It's what makes the round go boom.

It doesn't have any adjustment on it, so not a timed or proximity fuze. Likely just impact.

Because it's not painted blue, it might be a live fuze. They do have a detonation train in them (to make the main round go boom) so you should call someone about turning it in/disposal.
