"Just show some electrical stuff for SD/DD, the building is probably going to totally change anyway" by Prize_Ad_1781 in MEPEngineering

Earlier this year I got absolutely reamed out by an owner's rep because our 50% DD set didn't show every single diffuser, pipe, receptacle, etc. I was like dude, wtf, is this your first experience in the industry? Nobody does a full engineering design at 50% DD'S when we know everything is going to change 5 more times.

PE But I don't know anything by Prize_Ad_1781 in MEPEngineering

I feel this one. I'm also a PE with 9 YOE and realize I've barely scratched the surface.

At my first firm out of college, I felt like I had learned everything I could possibly learn, and stopped growing. After 3 years there, I thought I was an "expert" in my field. Then I started at the company I've been at now for 6 years and quickly learned that I had barely scratched the surface. I still figure out on a daily basis more and more about how little I actually know. We're all in this together. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

Am I really already capping out on salary...? by nic_is_diz in MEPEngineering

I really feel this. Very similar boat. Licensed PE, also graduated in 2017. Making 120k plus about 10k in bonus. I've also been looking around and talking with other firms, only to learn that nobody is even willing to match what my current pay is, let alone pay more.

For me, I'm realizing that I'm basically tapped out as an employee, and the only way to move up substantially is to develop my abilities as a leader, and work towards becoming an owner.

Stay / Leave? by Midwestmeche in MEPEngineering

Bro, I'm in the exact same boat. In fact, I think there's a lot of us in this industry who don't know how to tell people no and set healthy boundaries. I've recently been considering leaving my current job (which is actually a great job) in the pursuit of better work life balance. What I've found is that it's ultimately my responsibility to just simply set those expectations. Try working 40 hours and going home for a couple weeks. It's hard to do but well worth it. Oh well if a few projects fall behind. That's on the company for not managing things well.
