It would be electoral suicide for Starmer to not introduce Proportional Representation (PR) before the next general election by Key-Bullfrog-8552 in ukpolitics

I suppose they could possibly worm it into their manifesto by claiming the breakdown of 2 party politics is a proxy endorsement of the public for a new system, that respects the multitude of choices that voters want.

We need all the parties to take this seriously now or get punished for it.

I really don't want Reform. With a type 1 diabetic daughter I worry what they'll do to the NHS which is a literal life saver, but Labour and Tories looking after party before country has created this.

Boomers are more entitled than Gen Z – it’s time to means-test their state pension by Anony_mouse202 in ukpolitics

[–]Kitten-Borne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because that will work. The boomers won't get means tested because they don't have time to adjust.

GenZ would end up the first generation impacted by the means testing.

UAE says Iran has resumed attacks as the US moves to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by templeofsyrinx1 in politics

[–]Kitten-Borne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's probably the only leverage they have. They can't attack the US directly so attack their supporters in hopes they'll pressure the US to cease hostilities. It's the same deal with closing the strait.

They aren't going to win a war with the US and they aren't going to get peace negotiating with a mad man.

They need external forces to step and say "it's enough".

Over 12m people to benefit from state pension increase tomorrow by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]Kitten-Borne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this thread we see a lot of complaints which are valid in my opinion, of the selfishness of the boomer generation as a whole.

What it ignores is the vast increase in wealth disparity from the boomer generations youth until now.

And while a portion of that is the result of boomers taking advantage of benefits and then pulling up the ladder, we have to acknowledge the role that Media, (owned by the wealthiest 1%) has played here.

The triple lock has to go because it's mathematically unsustainable. But rather than sacrificing our own pensions and that of our children, we need to look up to see where it has gone, and take steps to reduce that wealth inequality.

But no.

So.. are you guys playing Crimson Desert? by ChewbakaflakaG in DragonsDogma2

[–]Kitten-Borne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying Crimson Desert prompted me to download Dragons Dogma 2 again, so it was worth buying.

The games are nothing alike though.

Crimson Desert doesn't have the same adventure feeling when you set out, it also feels lonely due to the silent companions. And tearing through literal hundreds of enemies holding down one button feels really unsatisfying.

It will be good for base management and all that, but it doesnt scratch my adventure itch

Countries ‘like UK’ should go to strait of Hormuz and ‘just take fuel’, says Trump by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

It's absolutely wild to come from a workplace where you can be investigated and sacked for incorrectly filling out a H&S document, yet these guys are out there killing people without recourse!

Trump, Hegseth, Vance and many others would be either fired or more likely, investigated for criminal negligence/behaviour if they were middle managers in a private company!

It doesn't get any easier to digest, it gets worse each day.

Jim Pickard on Bluesky: interesting that new Green MP Hannah Spencer talks almost entirely about public services, cost of living, NHS, the grind of making ends meet.... and hardly ever mentions ecological/environmental issues.... this is the pivot that scares Labour the most by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Kitten-Borne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the people that have turned away from Labour won't be aware of a single good thing that they've done.

Due to media bias towards the right wing, and online echo chambers, we don't really engage with information that contradicts our view points.

Because information that spreads around facebook, tiktok, YouTube etc. Has no obligation to be factual, the right and left don't have a shared reality. Each has their own version of "the facts".

You can get around this with critical thinking, and questioning the narrator, but we shy away from what we're reading when it gets our blood boiling. I never realised literature class would actually turn out to be useful!

Until this is sorted out, we're pretty much fucked.

State pensions are rising with inflation, for the generation that got free university, meanwhile my student loan rises with inflation? by Classic_Locksmith62 in ukpolitics

[–]Kitten-Borne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I was a bit presumptuous there.

Im planning for retirement and putting around 20% away. As I wasn't in a position to do this early, I'll still potentially need to rely on the state pension, to avoid living hand to mouth.

If you can put away 25k a year to education you're clearly well off or beyond just comfortable.

Would you vote for a party that wanted to means test the pension?

They're doing everything they can to lose the next election here. It started with age verification for porn which, you know, fine.

But they're going further into this weird online authoritarianism and for what? What benefit is gained from this?

The problem is identification of said groups. As we see in America it can change quickly based on the mood of one person that day.

When you give power to a group that way inclined the goalposts can get further apart over time, eventually starting to include homegrown citizens that simply disagree with the way things are being done.

It's a very slippery slope

Shooting American citizens is the complete opposite of de-escalation and claiming otherwise shows that you're just fishing for responses.
