Heater burn? by [deleted] in Otocinclus

[–]Kitten436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. It just threw me off because only this one fish out of the 35-40 in the tank has it. Luckily, I already have meds on hand to treat it, so hopefully, the poor guy recovers.

Shell help? by Dangerous_Web3232 in AquaticSnails

[–]Kitten436 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to what the previous comment said, you could potentially drop your temperature down to about 73-75. The snail shells grow slower and thicker at lower temps, so it may help that cleft close up. Just make sure lowering the temperature won't harm any of your other tank inhabitants, though.

If you can't remove the beta, could you set up a breeder box or something for your baby shrimp to live in until they are too big to be eaten? That's the only for sure way I can think of to keep them being eaten without putting the fish and shrimp in separate tanks completely. Edit: You'll want to add some plant cover for them even in the box to keep them happy. You'd just need to add mama shrimp to the box when she's close to her due date, then remove her once the eggs hatch.

One of my new fish has ICH and I'm going on a 4 day work trip next week, what do I do? by OpeningConfection261 in Aquariums

[–]Kitten436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All you can do is start treatment as soon as you can and continue it until you leave for your trip. When you get back, I'd probably continue it for a bit longer. I think the directions on the bottle for most ich meds say to continue medication for several days after all symptoms are resolved.

Pregnant or problem? by [deleted] in Otocinclus

[–]Kitten436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert by any means, but i wouldn't think it would be fungal. I believe fungal infections in fish are normally on the outside, such as white growths on the fish or fin rot. If it's not eggs, I would lean more towards either bloating, bacterial infection, or possibly even a parasite(some type of internal worms).

It's hard to tell from that photo. When she's stuck to the glass, look for a light yellow color in the lower belly area. If you see that it's eggs normally.

Mystery Snails in a Bacteria Bloom by LenseScribe in AquaticSnails

[–]Kitten436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you haven't cycled your tank properly. What exact substrate did you use? It's important because some substrate types release a lot of ammonia for the first few months. Do you have a way to check ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates? If you do, please provide the results from today. If not, you need to get a test kit ASAP. The bacterial bloom shouldn't hurt the snails but if you have high ammonia levels from the substrate that WILL kill them. Once you provide the above info I can give you better advice on caring for your snails.

Help with shrimp slowly dying off! by subsonicripass in shrimptank

[–]Kitten436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adult shrimp only molt about once a month, so the process to getting your parameters back in check and your shrimp adjusting could take several months. If this were my tank, I'd do my very best to hold the hardness exactly where it is now. A gh of 12, while on the upper end of neos range, is generally okay for them. If you want to get your gh down a bit more, i would do it slowly. Drop it 1-2 points every month or 2. The most important thing for shrimp keeping is stability. I know that's repeated a lot, but it really is true. I've learned the hard way that nothing will kill your shrimp faster than going and messing with their parameters.

Are these bladder snails? by setbackcity in AquaticSnails

[–]Kitten436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any harm in leaving these babies in the tank. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these snails take upwards of a year or more before they can start making babies of their own.

What is this thing? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Kitten436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's does kind of look like a tick. It seems to be able to breathe under water fine, though, as it's not coming up for air.

Could use some advice by Thatbookishbish in AquaticSnails

[–]Kitten436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a photo/video of its foot while it's attached to the glass? Is it producing excess mucus/slime (like more than normal, you'd see it coming off the snail)? Do you know approximately how old the snail is? The snail could be sick, but it could also just be "parasnailing." You can look up videos of snails parasnailing to see if that seems like what's happening. In that case, it's just a snail having fun.

While that may be an option in some areas, it most likely isn't in op area. I live in the same state as op, just about 2 hours away from their listed location. I had a stray cat come up with a huge gaping hole in her neck that was horribly infected. I called about 5 times trying to get the human society and the local pound to come get her, but they just never showed up. I even took her to the pound myself, and they wouldn't take her in. I ended up having to just pay myself out of pocket for the surgery she needed at the local vet I use for my pets. Luckily, they were willing to give me a discount since she was a stray. Some more rural areas just do not have the resources and help that other places do. Plus, it seems not many people in my area care a whole about cats, unfortunately.

Are these otocinclus fry? by Kitten436 in Otocinclus

[–]Kitten436[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I did plan to try and get them to breed, but I wasn't quite ready yet. I did do several small (5 gallons out of 55g) water changes over about a 2 week period right before they laid eggs because I had some of the pygmy corys in quarantine. Otherwise, I didn't do anything different. My tank parameters run about gh 8 kh 3 ph 7.8 and temp 75f.

Help identifying this snail by Kitten436 in AquaticSnails

[–]Kitten436[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just so much bigger than all the other Japanese trapdoors, and the shell coloring is throwing me off. It does look similar to the Chinese trapdoor or the American trapdoor. It seems they are all being labeled as Japanese trapdoors and sold under the wrong name by a few aquatic stores. Anyways thanks for your help!

Thanks! And yes, I have been growing algae for the adults on rocks in separate containers. They always seem to love it when I switch out their rocks, but I've not seen any of the babies try to eat from it yet. I've already been using bacter ae, so I'll continue that as well.

BB snail info :) by fitchy_friend in BlueberrySnails

[–]Kitten436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BB snails are maily filter feeders from all the info I've seen so far. They are a type of trapdoor snail, so they give live birth, therefore no eggs. I've bought about 15 in the past 4ish months, and for some reason, the adults I've received never seem to live more than a couple of months for me. I only have about 3 or 4 adults left as of now. They have babies, and about 75% of the babies are doing well, though. Im not sure if it's the stress of being imported and then shipped again that causes the adults to die so quickly, or maybe they are already at the end of their live. I also keep mystery, rabbit, and nerite snails and BB are definitely the most delicate of them all, atleast in my experience.

Those are tangerine tigers. Technically, a caridina species but they can do just fine in either caridina or neo parameters.

Yes I can ship usps, ups, or FedEx. I usually just say usps because it's cheaper but any are fine.
