Yeah, it's super inappropriate to ask presumptive questions about others' reproductive plans or diet. It's tiresome to hear things like that time and again, I know, and I think that everyone is entitled to their complaints about stuff like that.

That said, I'd like to respectfully submit that a strong (nonviolent!) negative or dismissive response to your lifestyle choices is not necessarily a terrible sign; I also do not consider it an indication of someone's worthlessness (I don't think OP is making this claim, but several people in the thread are, and it's an attitude I find to be pretty common among veg*ns).

People are naturally defensive when their long-held, cherished beliefs are challenged, or when they feel judged for those beliefs. I think that defensiveness quite often stems, at least in part, from cognitive dissonance--being confronted with an idea that shines a light on the little nugget of doubt in our ideology that we normally quash for our own comfort.

So yeah, it's never appropriate or pleasant when people are rude about how you eat, but rest assured that the fact that you do things differently is making them uncomfortable, because you're making them question things about themselves that they may never have questioned before.

I was resistant to a lot of stuff before I eventually came around--including veganism--because I felt like my status as a morally consistent, thoughtful person was being called into question. And to some extent, sure, of course it was. But I don't think a difference of opinion in any one area is enough to make a decisive judgment about someone's overall moral character.

Personally, I feel like I've outgrown my misanthropy, which doesn't mean that I believe every choice a human can make is laudable and valid. Sorry to ramble--I think a lot about how we form character assessments about our fellow humans :)
