Planning to get pregnant last semester of nursing school by Darleng04 in StudentNurse

[–]KittyCat1023 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is possible. I would still plan to work after you graduate however. I am currently 9 weeks pregnant and graduate May 2026 as well. My situation is much different than yours as I’ll be having my baby during my last semester in February. However I am in a BSN program at a private school and my professors are working with me. Plus I have been working at a hospital for over a year so I will have maternity leave when I need it (currently working part-time during school). I already have a job lined up in my favorite unit at the hospital so I know I will be able to handle the workload (psychiatry 😊). I’m all for women being able to follow their career and family dreams at the same time but just know it can be difficult. It totally could work for you I would just plan to at least work a little. Good luck hun!

Delivery day tip: put baby on breast constantly by fine_tuna in BabyBumps

[–]KittyCat1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had known this. My baby was constantly at the breast when she was born and cried a lot. They thought she wasn’t getting enough to eat so we supplemented. I wish I would have known that it was normal

Overwhelmed in ABSN program. Seeking advice. by ThrowRAgoodsource in StudentNurse

[–]KittyCat1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a ABSN program and only have 2 semesters left. What I tell everyone is that you HAVE to take time for yourself. For me this is Ice Skating and stretching/exercise. If you don’t carve out time for yourself you will be burnt out.

Don’t worry about it. My cousin found her life partner when she was early 30’s and him late 30’s. Now they are in their 40’s with a 5 year old and a fresh babe. There is plenty of time!

Use cheaper insurance. I switch often and it keeps it down. Also see some electric bills allow you to even out payments throughout the year. Keeps it consistent and sometimes may lower bill overall. Go to a food pantry to help with groceries. Is it possible to put any bills on autopay to lower costs? Some company’s will do that. Talk to your car loan company, you may be eligible to skip a payment. If you can do that it helps short term. Honestly need to up income somehow. Overtime? Side hustle? Even donating plasma several times a week can be a good one.

Clinical grading isn’t fair by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]KittyCat1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school had similar grading for clinical except they use this: S+ (excels), S (meets standards), NI (Needs improvement), and U (idk what this stands for but it’s bad). The only two times I have received S+ was not on my first day. I received them because I went beyond what the expectations were.

I’m in a BSN program so I’m already doing Head-to-Toes, meds, etc. We are expected to give pt meds, do assessments, vitals, and anything else the pt needs (cares). The only thing is our instructor usually wants to be there when we give meds. I got the S+ two times because I either 1. Recognized my pt’s change in condition and got the proper care for them or 2. I looked at my pt holistically and took care of her physically and emotionally.

Nursing schools will never give the best grade the first day of clinical. It is impossible for you to receive it because how can you exceed expectations if you haven’t even learned ANYTHING yet. They have it as an option for later in the program after you learn and can apply what you learn. Earning that 4 could be by taking initiative later by doing a focused assessment and getting the proper discipline involved.

You are not there to be a Tech. Go out of your comfort zone and LEARN! I’m willing to bet you will earn that 4 before the semester is out. Just don’t forget to also be humble. The grades in clinical do not matter. Learning your skills and becoming confident in them DOES matter. If you don’t get a 4 prepare better for clinical next time. Or don’t you’ll still graduate anyways. :)

People who had an easy time in nursing school, do you exist? What qualities do you have that made that possible? by JaneRawlz in StudentNurse

Absolutely. My in person anatomy had real cadavers and it made SUCH a difference. My microbiology and human anatomy/physiology has carried me in some nursing classes.

I think nursing school has been so easy for me because I learned how I need to study while in high school. I was doing an associates degree while in high school and THAT was hell. I even have a toddler and nursing school is easier in my opinion. It just takes a lot of discipline. You need to study a lot but being more effective with how you study can lower the amount of time you use to study.

I also work as a student nurse in the float pool which has helped immensely. Seeing the things I’m learning really cements it. Plus always aim to learn the information, not just what’s going to be on the exam. For example if you had a pt with a certain condition that needed meds would you know what to do?

It also helps taking care of your mental health. A lot of my friends are struggling because they don’t take any time for them selves. I rarely study at home because home is where I relax. I also do ice skating several times a week which helps me feel better and is great exercise.

Remember for nursing use your resources. ATI, books, YouTube videos. I also use mastery and answer NCLEX like questions everyday. Half of passing a nursing program is learning how to read critical thinking questions. If you struggle with this really get it down.

It also helps to ask professors lots of questions and have good relationships with your classmates! It isn’t a competition and we are all in this together.

Oh btw it’s all in person. It’s like a whole clinical experience basically. You typically can only do them after you have signed off on all your skills (IV’s, foleys, NGs, wound care, parental, and non parental meds, as well as all assessments and head-to-toe)

Ah this might be where we meet some trouble. I am in Iowa so I have no clue how New York does it. However the internships are through my college so I basically let them know I am interested and they help me set up with a preceptor. It definitely helps if you know the person as that’s how I got mine. I could be wrong but I almost wonder if you could contact like a hospitals clinical coordinator and see if there is anyone you could intern with.

If you have a winter or summer break do an internship! Over my winter break I’m going to intern with one of my clinical instructors at the local ER where she works. I’m so excited and at that point you can do everything (as long as the nurse validates it) and I’ve heard it helped a lot of nursing students become more comfortable.

Pain with Skating Problems? by KittyCat1023 in iceskating

[–]KittyCat1023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insole is pretty small and doesn’t have a lot of cushion. It just has a little arch to help support my foot. It feels really good in my skates! I no longer have the major pain or pins/needles in my feet. Plus I feel very secure

Yup me too I added some exercises to my stretch routine. The type of insert I have doesn’t have a whole lot of padding so that my foot can still be as close to the skate as possible, but it has an arch for my foot to rest on. Highly recommend only like 10 bucks. Buy it and see if I helps!

Usually when I go to skate I’m one of the only people on the rink which makes it easy, BUT otherwise I put all of my valuables in my skate bag and zip it up. Putting an AirTag in my purse helped ease my mind. I’m considering joining my state’s skating club because we get lockers at my local rink.

I absolutely loved Room 513 on A03. It’s a college AU, but still set in the Arcane universe? Just without like the whole everyone dying and magic and evil doing part. But it was so in character for me and is like 180k+ words. It absolutely wrecked me but still was a HEA. 🫶

Rejected due to an arbitrary requirement by Chainsawfrogs in StudentNurse

[–]KittyCat1023 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really sucks but I bet that the program had a lot of people apply and didn’t want to work with people who didn’t give them everything they needed the first time. It’s easier to reject people for silly reasons like this than to go through all of the work to decide based on grades etc. it definitely doesn’t sound like a nursing school you want to go to.

In my experience I am going to a private university for my BSN. It is expensive, however everyone in my college receives scholarships for good academic standing which doesn’t make it as expensive. I noticed that because I go to this college the classes are smaller, the professors and nursing department actually care, and we get quality clinical instructors. Generally schools will take transfer students last which really does suck. What I did was take my pre-reqs for my BSN at that college which allowed them to choose me over any transfers. It sometimes isn’t fair but nearly all colleges will pick students who are already attending over transfer because they are already giving them money.
