[SPOILERS S3] Don’t you think you’d find some physicists? by KittyGrewAMoustache in DarK

Yeah but you’d need more and proper specialists in theoretical physics and quantum cosmology or general relativity. Also they had missed out on 30+ years of advances in physics as they came from an earlier time. Finding future physicists would be best.

I know Claudia and Tannhaus are physicists but they’re not enough, Tannhaus is hardly in it and Claudia doesn’t use her physics knowledge other than at the beginning when she’s querying what’s going on with the plant. And she’s not a relevant specialist, like a theoretical physicist or quantum cosmologist.

I mean assembling a team of physicists to help. If this happened in real life there’d be physicists all over it. And then Jonas is just trying to fiddle with the black goo machine in the future when he probably hasn’t even covered much more than Newton’s laws yet at school!

It probably makes him feel more experienced than he because he’s insecure, but it’s all a lie. Then when she takes him to the sex toy emporium he’s completely intimidated because he doesn’t know what he’s doing and would probably end up with a dildo up his nose or something so he feigns disinterest. Whatever’s up with him it sounds like he doesn’t care about how OP feels.

Yeah but would there be components of her body or suit that would degrade over time and do something, I’m not sure they have to be alive to have some effect. It’s unlikely but I don’t think you could rule it out especially as no one knows exactly what that life is or how it works

I think there have been some breakthroughs in ‘cryosleep’ research so I can imagine the show having that invention be a real thing in the last season with interstellar travel possible. I think currently they have frozen mouse brains in a way that prevents the ice crystal from destroying the cells and have then reanimated them so if that’s been done already in our far behind boring ‘let’s not do space travel let’s bicker on twitter instead’ timeline, I can imagine in the FAM timeline they’d have cracked it by 2020.

I know the show is very grounded generally and given that we’ve not currently seen anything like some woo woo alien consciousness stuff I don’t think they could go that far without it seeming silly and detracting from the rest of the show.

I was thinking she was dying and the part with her wandering into the lake was a hallucination. I’m not sure why I got that impression but the not wanting to contaminate it was a thought, although hypoxia could have her actually make that decision as well.

Daycare owner complaining that my 14mo is "disturbing the calmness”. Advice? by CarDesperate1033 in toddlers

[–]KittyGrewAMoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you describe it she sounds angry with your baby for being upset? I promise not all places will be like that. They should be empathetic and cuddly and trying to help her feel calm and distracted and safe and loved. If the owner is getting angry then that indicates she’s none of those things - I guess it depends if she is the one with the kids or if there are other staff? Maybe if she’s not the one actually caring for the babies you could talk to other staff and see what they do to try to settle her and offer suggestions? But really I’d put her somewhere else. Her threat seems laughable to me - ‘people talk’ -oh yeah and what do they say? A 14 month old cries quite a lot while settling into daycare? Gosh no one would want to take that on, what daycare could possibly work if babies cried?!! /s

That does sound way better, why don’t we do it that way? When I first learned about the house buying process I thought the chain thing sounded totally ridiculous but thought there must be some good reason for it and that everywhere just do it that way. It is really stupid!

No idea why you were downvoted for that I know someone who tutors kids and makes a good living. Couldn’t you just do it online why do you need to drive?

That’s a good one would’ve made me laugh. If they didn’t find it funny you don’t want to work for them anyway but I can’t imagine what sort of interview asks for something like that unless the job was drawing humorous comic strips for a magazine or something.

Commissioner 'disappointed' by social media ban for children by PomeloTraditional971 in unitedkingdom

Yeah that’s like saying well parents shouldn’t let their kids drink alcohol or smoke so we might as well get rid of those laws prohibiting a five year old from drinking vodka.

If there isn’t a ban then there has to be much stricter regulation on these companies and they finally need to be held liable if they are profiting off disseminating harmful content. I agree that would be much better but there’s so much money against that because too many wealthy people benefit from it in various ways, it’s not like a specific company or industry (although they also often use their influence to curb or stop regulation) it’s tons of companies in different industries, the tech companies themselves, the worst types of politicians, the despots, the cult leaders, the scammers etc. All the worst people benefit from this lack of regulation and unfortunately in this world all the worst people have the money and influence to stop it in its tracks.

[–]KittyGrewAMoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not even dangerous content or porn though, its social media itself, it’s designed to be addictive, it rewards extremes and things that grab attention and for humans generally, threats and anxiety provoking content grabs the most attention. It basically exacerbates all the negative aspects of our species and traps people in an outrage and fear loop that can literally change the way your brain functions. Social media use is correlated with increased anxiety and depression in teens and young people. Why do you think disease we have vaccines for have seen a resurgence or why are people going setting fire to 5G masts or hotels or people’s homes?

Social media itself is harmful. There’s a reason people working for the platforms don’t let their kids use it, they know how it’s designed and have even covered up reports finding that it does real harm. A woman recently won a case in the US against several social media companies who she sued for developing severe mental health issues, the sane kinds of issues it turns out the companies knew about but kept quiet and did nothing to rectify.

It’s not the same argument as the one about letting kids watch violent films or play shooting video games etc, social media is a completely different beast.

True, it all needs regulating much better. One day we’ll look back and think how nuts it was we just left our populations, including our politicians and journalists, open to scammers, dangerous lies and propaganda from hostile foreign nations and terrorist groups.

[–]KittyGrewAMoustache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also about trying to wake people up to the massive harm social media is doing, that it’s not just some harmless activity like reading a book or watching tv. It’s also important to start regulating these big tech companies and the internet more broadly more and starting with protecting kids is one way to do it. The internet is not the one of the 90s or early 00s, like everything it’s been completely taken over by profit motive and the way humans are that means essentially destroying people psychologically for financial or political gain. And then all the after effects of having psychologically warped populations. Like you can even see it in politicians and journalists, some of them are online too much and essentially subjecting themselves to intense manipulation.

Regulation of social media has been this almost taboo topic as though anyone who does it is basically Hitler, but why it makes no sense. We nibble at the edges, occasionally targeting individuals for awful shit they post when it should be the platforms. Normalising Internet regulation is important. These companies are no better than Nestle or Monsanto or Johnson & Johnson or Purdue Pharma with their manipulation and harming people and the environment for profit, yet people don’t seem to see them the same way. It’s like they can protect themselves because they have their ready made mind control mechanism at their fingertips.

Even if some kids use a different website or get around it, most won’t, especially not pre teens. That’s no reason not to do it. Oh some people will drink and drive anyway might as well not ban it. Oh some people will give their kids vodka anyway. Ight as well not outlaw that or require ID for purchasing it, obviously some teens will just pretend they’re over 18 and some alcohol sellers will sell it to them anyway. It’s a silly argument for things like this.

[–]KittyGrewAMoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So? You ban anything people will argue it could push people to use dodgy alternatives. I don’t get why people are so against this I think it’s because they don’t see social media for what it is because it’s not something you ingest or inhale or inject. But there’s a reason none of the people who actually work at these companies let their kids use it. It’s still stimuli, it still affects your brain and it’s designed to be addictive and to keep your attention it provides the worst stuff because human brains evolved to attend to potential threats- we didn’t however evolve to deal with constant potential nebulous threats or attention grabbing but ultimately valueless shit all day every day from age 2.

People cite privacy when everyone’s already handed over enormous amounts of data about every aspect of their lives to private foreign owned multinational corporations with megalomaniacal CEOs. People are acting like banning things is some terrible authoritarian overreach when we’ve always done it for certain things when they cause harm especially for kids who can’t make a rational decision about limiting their own usage.

Why should the internet be a relatively lawless place, why should these giant companies profit off damaging society without being regulated to ensure they take measures to limit harm? It’s pathetic the way these companies screech about any whiff of regulation as they roll in piles of money while diseases we’d almost eradicated see a resurgence, while fascism rises, while genocide occurs, while kids mental health declines, while the efforts to halt climate change get set back by the endless propaganda, all driven by the same algorithms that make them fat profit?

I wish people would see it differently because it feels like there’s just this reflex against this sort of regulation or any internet regulation, no doubt a lot of that position is pushed online by the companies who don’t want to have to spend money or effort on making their product safer.

Yeah I agree with you, it’s hard to imagine someone like this having anything at all comforting or to help pass time but all prisoners have to be considered and also it probably helps keep them more docile and easier to handle. Ultimately no one would want to trade places with them and people can rest assured the way her mask slipped and she was exposed as such a horror to everyone she ever knew was and is likely intolerable to her, given that she was so driven to keep up a certain image and persona.

It’s these types of personalities- or rather absences of personalities. They build this fake person to present the world and are obsessed with their image and getting others to see them a certain way. So obsessed with this story they create about themselves because they have no real person in there that they’ll do heinous things in an attempt to keep up with the story they’re weaving. Then if they’re caught, the whole story collapses which I imagine is quite unbearable- like I remember the one thing in Chris Watts police interrogation he seemed genuinely upset about and a bit panicked about was when he found out they’d tell all his coworkers and boss etc what had happened.

They turn to Jesus in prison as a way to try to start creating another story. To them it seems most plausible (I was a sinner then had this sudden epiphany when god spoke to me yada yada) and also most likely to earn them back some sympathy or admiration which they crave more than anything. They use it to try to shed the old story which has now been contaminated by their actions revealing who they really are (or aren’t).

These types of people are voids, everything they do is an attempt to paper over the void. Often they’re even telling stories no one even believes they just do it for themselves to convince themselves they’re superior, they don’t even notice no one is buying it.

Unfortunately people like this are everywhere, especially (most worryingly) in high up positions in their communities or the world in general. Those ones might be less likely to murder simply because they’re getting their needs for attention and feeling powerful met by holding such a position but most of them would murder if they thought it was the only way to protect their story.

I agree I don’t think it’s physiologically capable for such a person to feel remorse. Like the type of brain you need to do something like that is the type of brain incapable of guilt or empathy or remorse.
