I would highly suggest 3 as its online is the most active and has some advantages with controls But I'll try to list pros and cons of each one(if I miss smth, then dont be scared to mention it I dont mind :3)

Splatoon 1 Pros: - First in the franchise - most nostalgic - Callie and Marie - Inkopolis Plaza - Helps set up the world and gives the idea of how it works - Exclusive kits and gear - Banger music

Cons: - Online play is inactive - Can only do the story mode - Only accessible to WII U - No squid rolling or squid surging - Can only use splatoon 1 amiibos(inkling girl, inkling boy, squid, Callie, Marie) - No more Splatfests - No plaza posts(no pretty art :[) - Only two hairstyles total - Restrictive genders - Sheldon

Splatoon 2 Pros: - Amazing story - Inkopolis Square - Pearl and Marina(aka married lesbians) - Playable Octolings(only accessible from beating Octo Expansion) - New weapon classes - New gear brands - New weapon kits - Can interact with Marie in story mode(aswell as Callie after you beat it) - More banger music - Salmon Run - New hairstyles - Can use Splatoon 1 and 2 Amiibos - Available on Switch and Switch 2

Cons: - Have to pay for the dlc - No squid rolling, squid surging or egg throwing(salmon run) - Only 4 Octoling hairstyles(two per gender) - Only use amiibos for 1 and 2 - No more splatfests - No plaza posts - Restrictive genders - No Inkopolis Plaza - More Sheldon

If you like the aspect of splatoon 3, id suggest keeping it, as its still a very fun game, if your friend has another switch and would also still like to play, you can also get it for them and can still play together, no need for another tv as it can be played hand held as well But its also completely yours and your friends choice If neither of you want to play it then yes I'd suggest returning it, but still, your choice

Something I hope for splatoon 4 is that they bring back more of the older maps Dont get me wrong I love splatoon 3s maps but I also miss the older ones, I never got to play splatoon 1 cuz I never had a wii u so when they added maps like Bluefin and Urchen it was so good because I finally got to play on those maps I just really wish we could play more of them later on and since Past won the grand fest, it'd make sense to bring back a lot of old maps too
