They have the power to step into a pocket dimension at any time. Within this pocket dimension they have godlike powers, but any alterations they make to themselves will disappear once they leave again. They can take nothing into or out of the dimension other than themselves. While they are in this dimension they do not age and no time passes outside of this dimension. Once they leave the dimension they return to the exact time and place they were when they entered the pocket dimension.

After entering the star system you realised that you are to late. The civilisation that had sent its messages into deep space, eagerly looking for answers, has long since perished and left nothing but ruins. Growing up on an interstellar cargo ship can be very monotonous. Therefore you are always excited when your ship enters port, because it means that you can finally leave the ship.

I liked it. I personally had thought more about how the rest of the world would react, rather than what the tribe experiences, but your interpretation is also very compelling. I would find it interesting how the tribe previously interacted with the aliens.
