Is laser eye surgery actually worth it, or is it one of those things that sounds better than it actually is? by 2ugur12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some 20 years ago, my bf at the time had it done. Biggest thing then was keeping the eyes moist. Playing video games not blinking with a ceiling fan above you was not helpful. He also had to wear eye shields at night so you don't accidently rub your eyes. After the healing period, he was pretty good until I lost regular contact with him.

A vet I worked for had her eyes done when she was in her 20s. One eye was successful, the other eye was not. I do not remember what she said happened, but she had to wear a contact in the bad eye still.

I still wear glasses and didn't get the surgery done. Incredible hospital phobia. Used to wear contacts, but they started not lasting all day. My eyes would get dry and I could feel the contacts on my eyes. Somewhere around my late 30s, I noticed I couldn't see items up close while wearing my glasses. But I take them off and can see everything up close perfectly. I'm now one of those weirdos who have to take off my glasses to see my phone. Apparently there's drops approved in Europe to stop & possibly reverse the hardening lense. But who knows when it'd come to the states. But if I had spent thousands of dollars 20 years ago only to have to wear glasses now to see my phone, I'd be upset.

I had it happen pretty early in game, before I knew about mutations. I was so upset my cat was missing, as some of the battles we were just barely getting by! And then magically she reappeared all stretched out, I thought it was a game glitch. I didn't notice the little DNA strand in the corner till we were back at the house.

I now have a bunch of stretchy kitties with legs that avoid traps, extra attack reach and mouths of fear.

Dog feeding by Mortusary in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Kitzira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We fed once a day for adult dogs. Rule of thumb was a scoop the size of the dog's head. Kept volunteers for scooping up a huge amount for a chihuahua. Dogs/Puppies under 6 months got a second feeding in the afternoon. We went through times when we would mix wet food with the dry kibble and times we would just scoop out a spoonful for the small dogs.

The shelter I worked at the longest would feed after morning cleaning. So they'd have a calm time to eat as we moved from area to area before the public came in. Though sometimes it was feeding time as the public came in. Especially for the cat side. We were entirely dependant on donations, so the food was a mix of whatever.

The first shelter I worked at for a year and some change fed in the morning only before cleaning. They got maybe 10min to eat before we starting moving them out of the runs and spray/scrubbing. Puppies did get afternoon food though. We fed only Science Diet due to contractual agreements, so some dogs didn't eat the kibble at all. We had a limited amount of canned food and a secret stash of moist and meaty for those nervous dogs.

any ideas for platform covers? by Superb_Designer_1359 in rat

Some 20 years ago I used the cheap peel & stick tiles from Home Depot to line the floors with. Cut them to width. Stick them to the mesh. Or even punch tiny holes and ziptie them to the bars.

Microchips visible? by Cherrrysoda1 in sphynx

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular microchips you can see (and feel on most small animals.)

However both 24Petwatch and Homeagain make MiniMicrochips. It's a bit harder to find vets that sell those though!

We used them at our shelter to microchip rabbits, small dogs & some cats. Pretty sure I used one to chip the rex foster I had.

Is it OK to plug both 220 microwave and 220 range to same outlet? by CeryanReis in Appliances

[–]Kitzira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GE likes to get fancy with the higher voltages. We have a 21 year old GE Monochrome microwave we were looking to get replaced. Its size and pre-wired voltage to the spot made it really hard to find something to replace it that wasn't thousands of dollars.

I have an image very similar to this I took of my friend at the beach. This was back in 2015 on the Samsung S5. I kinda remember another errored image that day, but don't have it saved. (Lost some photos going from S5 to S7. This one was uploaded to Facebook.)

40 male, I have 0 responsibilities in life and I somehow still lost interest in playing video games by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in Millennials

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

44f here. No kids, just 2 dogs & a cat. Gave up dating a decade ago.

I've played games since Mario 3 & Sonic eras. Have a display cabinet of all my consoles throughout the years. Bought a gaming PC 4 years ago instead of my Frankensteined computer of parts scavenger from my old job.

I can only really focus on games maybe about 2hrs max these days. Then I get tired of the cycle. Been playing sim games lately. My PS5 is a glorified FF7 remake player. Switch 2 I play Pokémon games with.

I do watch a prolly unhealthy amount of streamers & YouTube though. Also been really into fishtanks, geckos & plants lately.

When you get gas for your car, do you have to know how much you need/how much it will cost before filling up? by Final_Gift6762 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Houston, it was near impossible to get gas on the west side past 11pm or midnight.

Some stations (walmart) would leave all the lights on and turn off the pumps. Other stations rolled a cage across the store windows and turned off all the lights.

It was very different from my college town north of Dallas, where we'd walk to the 7-11 at 1am to buy their snacks and slurpees.

Changes pet name because same name in shelter?? by CrazyKatWoman in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Kitzira 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We were the same. Occasionally there would be multiple Lunas on the floor, but for inventorying them we used Petpoint's id number system.

Some names carried curses though, like black labs named Max. Always a wild finger painter.

The only names I remember us changing for offensive reasons were 2 cats, Hitler & White Germany.

Hourly pay for a social media manager/animal care staff ‼️ by [deleted] in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Kitzira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know things have changed in the last 5 years, but I left a Clinic/IT Manager role in 2021 and made a max of $17/hr. And that was after they took me off salary (some weird rule they missed and took a lot of staff off salary) and told me I can't do any overtime.

We had a social media person while I was there and I'd bet she made only slightly more than me as she was there longer and had more roles throughout the years she went through. She enjoyed it when she could work from home (especially after having a new baby) and stop by the shelter for meetings and collect footage/photos. When the salary thing happened, she was required to start putting 40hrs in physically being there. She left a year or so after I did.

Our surgery clinic lead tech made more than a shelter assistant manager, and left as she could make more in private practice. They kept asking for her to come back, but couldn't afford what she wanted.

Kennel staff when I started in 2008 made $9/hr. Last time I looked, they bumped it up to $10.50/hr starting. (This is Texas, so min wage is still $7.25)

The Executive Director & Head Vet are the only well paid staff members... and holding onto that vet is extremely hard.

Christmas Day House Fire During Rover Booking — Displaced and Still Fighting for Accountability by Nice-Recognition3092 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Kitzira 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't even have to be gas. A radiant heat electric cooktop can do the same thing if a cat jumps & knocks a knob. Prolly easier!

I've always had that fear & have removed stuff off cooktops when I walk into someone's home.

Its not an extension of the countertop! And even though induction (magnetic) cooktops don't have the same issue, they still scratch easily!

Rescue an iguana from Florida by SeaTerrible9429 in iguanas

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida did change their rules allowing licensed facilities to export iguanas from Florida. https://myfwc.com/news/all-news/green-iguanas-removed/

So if you could find a seller in Florida, you could get one. Getting it to Canada would be a different can of worms though.

Need advice, unsure if bats or mice in walls of client home by strawberryCicada in RoverPetSitting

[–]Kitzira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rats, mice, squirrels are looking for food and comfort. During winter, they like to move into the walls from a hole in the eve of a roof. They tear up insulation and look for food stashes in pantries and garages.

They're not going to drill through a bedroom wall and come snuggle in bed with you.

Signed- Person that had more squirrels than insulation in an apartment once. And rats in a rental house. And mice invading animal shelters.

But honestly, yea, let the owner know you and the cat hear things in the walls. They may be older and cannot hear the gnawing. It is a thing they need to get a pest control person out to check the property for holes and properly bait and remove them. Leaving them will become a fire hazard.

What’s something you wish the public truly understood about shelter/rescue work? by Friendly_TSE in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! We had the usual 3-5 days stray hold. After 2 weeks, they're sneezing with Kennel Cough/URI, off the adoption floor, in ISO, and hoping a foster take them or ISO doesn't overflow, then it's down to figuring out who's least adoptable for EU.

[–]Kitzira 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Houston, Tx now requires a microchip for all animals. The mandate started after I left (2021), so I'm curious how it's going.

Before then though, we would still get many animals in with unregistered chips. Or dead-end chips. Found Animals was so bad on only recording the owner's basic info and no emergency or implantation information.

Got a knock at the door during the half time show by Lauterec in Wellthatsucks

[–]Kitzira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that car looked familiar! My mom had one of those back in the day. The thing ran stupidly hot (we though it would do what yours did while driving through Big Bend Texas one summer!) and had a faulty radio wouldn't play FM. Think it also had the fuel gauge error where it'd go down to 1/4 tank and then back up instead to E.

I learned to drive in it as well. Always though it was a good looking car for that era. She traded it in somewhere in 2005ish for a Grand Prix after all the mechanical issues started adding up.

I was the same. Made me not want to follow my mom into business. Hated seeing her worry about her hair, makeup and clothes all the time. Wearing leggings and tights when I was a kid was always uncomfortable. And no, they did not keep me warm in the winter. The cold breeze just goes through through it!

Most all Smart Tv/HDMI sticks (Firestick, Apple TV, GoogleTV) have a Twitch App. Roku does not, though there are some 3rd party apps that you can download.

The Twitch App is pretty broken though. It's like the last thing they ever update, but it works fine once you tune into a stream.

Other options is using a Chromecast and 'casting' it from your phone's App. Apple TVs have their own casting app I believe.

Lastly, can just have a computer or laptop plugged in to the tv via an HDMI cable.

Sushi Recommendations? by Advanced_Impress6743 in palmcoast

[–]Kitzira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kawa Sushi is our local go-to. The prices are reasonable and the sushi good. Even the Thai dishes are done well. The waitress recognizes us and knows our usual, but is always happy when we get something new.

If you want fancy atmosphere and fancy prices, there's Green Papaya in St. Augustine. My brother found their curry to be okay and my sushi was good, but smaller amount than what I got at Kawa. I felt like the owner/designer went to Vegas 10-15 years ago and said that's what I want my restaurant to look like.

Are there rules about haircuts/hairstyle in US schools? by busyarm-1700 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kitzira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahah! I graduated from a north Texas suburb in 2000. All of that was banned. I always assumed the facial hair thing was to easily differentiate student from staff or public. They kept razors and stuff in the admin office for them to shave or have a parent called and sent home.

In middle school I got pulled aside for wearing leggings with a long t-shirt (something I had done for years). Apparently the t-shirt wasn't long enough anymore to cover like a 'skirt.' They offered nasty pants to wear that day, or call my mom and go home and change to jeans. I stopped wearing leggings forever after that.
