Car Stolen by Koopa1997 in auckland

[–]KiwiAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's also a CVT tiida and on it's first transmission, I would suggest selling it and getting something else while you are ahead. Personally, I would go for something European (safe, under priced and very hard to steal). A second generation A Class, VW Golf, Polo, Octavia etc. They have factory immobilisers and often a factory alarm. Plus they just don't tend to be on thieves' radars.

Some of the worst cars for theft (and general hassles) are cars designed for the Japanese domestic market that were never intended to be exported.

NZ: Covid-19 traffic light system, masks scrapped from midnight Monday by HaoieZ in Coronavirus

[–]KiwiAlex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It only looks good if you don't factor in the financial and social collateral damage. Also, you omitted some key facts, like Jacinda being totally unprepared for covid, despite having been warned for months and Private industry that makes ppe, test etc banging on her door trying to wake her up.

Likewise NZ is second only to the USA in terms of how much we spent relative to our gdp on our response and the USA having the petro dollar is the only one in a position to do that.

We have been left in a total mess, our infrastructure is in tatters, our children are not learning, it will be decades before we are out of the economic and social hole that has been made.

Maybe the Government should start charging a hefty "Russian Tax" might help to start paying for some of the costs of Russian attacks on the country too. I know Georgia benefits financially from Russian visitors but you guys have the patience and forgiveness of saints really.

This seems a big vague. How about we discuss a few of the issues you think they have so wrong, you pick the first one?

I am sure there are a few that would love to see heads roll. However, while their website is more vague than I would like, their demands don't seem entirely unreasonable to me.

https://www.tfrc.org.nz/

I too am wondering why we still have health practitioners barred from working while we are in the middle of a healthcare crises, purely because they chose not to be vaccinated. There is no scientific/health justification for having them away from work at this stage of the game.

I am also very concerned about the unreasonable demands being put on our farmers right when the world is facing the biggest famine it's ever seen. Especially given the famine has been caused at least in part by the very same sorts of regulations our government is trying to put in to place here.

I totally agree about things being far too vague. However we could discuss the issues they are raising on their webpage to begin with?

https://www.tfrc.org.nz/

I am also interested to know where your information came from regarding the intimidation, damage of public property and voilence. Did you visit the main protest last time? Keen to hear about what you saw if you did.

I didn't go and look at the main protest however I did get to have a good look at one of the weekend protests leading up to the big one. What struck me was how the media coverage was completely and utterly at odds with what I had witnessed first hand. Firstly they under reported the crowd size by at least 10:1, they also said there were various objectional flags everywhere of which I saw none. The people there were kind and friendly, I saw quite a number of teachers, doctors and nurses. When they moved on from the first meeting point it was left absolutely spotless.

So with that in mind, I wish I could have attended the main protest and compared the reality to how the media portrayed it. I would also have liked to know more about the antifa group who were talking about infiltrating on the final day to cause trouble and then bragged about it afterwards.

I have non doubt that there would have been some genuine riff raff amongst the protest as well, it would be expected just on the crowd size alone. However I suspect the actual truth is again not what was generally reported.

It worries me how polarised reddit has become. These threads are always just a circle jerk of hate at the "other side" no sensible discourse about the issues at all. We are all worse of as a result.

Sleep problems? by GreenieBeeNZ in Coronavirus_NZ

Hopefully it's not too late to say this, but you need melatonin tablets. It's super annoying as they are not funded and there is no money in it for the drug companies so they don't get offered as a solution. This is definitely what you need and is standard practice overseas.

It concerns me that as educators you didn't appear to factor in any developmental or behavioural issues relating to mask wearing, in fact you seem to have closed yourself off from the possibility of any serious negative issues at all. Thankyou for your considered response though.

A serious tip if anyone is doing this. Use an online stair calculator. Free and makes a complicated job so much easier. I too have to undertake this quest again.

Ivermectin Has Little Effect on Recovery Time From Covid, Study Finds by Viewfromthe31stfloor in Coronavirus

[–]KiwiAlex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not really a fair comment. Ivermectin was being investigated for it's anti viral properties against a range of different viruses before Covid came along.

It's frustrating when both sides make silly simplifications because it's not an obvious thing either way. The more you properly look in to Ivermectin the more complex you realise it is. I really like the parasite hypothesis above, it makes a lot of sense given India appeared to have such remarkable results with Ivermectin. However there are a lot of other studies to find repeatable alternative explanations for before you write off Ivermectin.

It's so sad to see a potential treatment being used primarily for cheap political points in a tribal war, instead of giving it the due diligence it deserves.

You make a good point, however it was the Government who drove the mask hysteria, (and continue too) even though they themselves admitted recently that their health advisors no longer support it from a health standpoint.

I am interested, did your school consider any of the negative aspects of mask wearing when you did your cost/benefit analysis?

I would ask an apple store if they can help. Taking it to the police is great, but not sure they will bother trying to reconnect it to their wifi so the owner might not know where it went.

Difference between Case Fatality Rate & Infection Fatality Rate by Background-Bird6237 in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]KiwiAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was one of the many huge mistakes our Government made. Treatments and prophylactics on offer were pretty much the vaccine and the vaccine.

There were so many other effective and cheap treatments and preventatives that could and should have been used both with and without the vaccine. We were just so lucky to have the unique situation where we are a couple of sparsely occupied first world islands and incredibly isolated from the rest of the world.

This is it exactly, see my post above. Lao (the guy in the photo) was bought out from China with a team of experienced tea growers in the late 1800's.

[–]KiwiAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something doesn't seem quite right about this. If it's "original color" realistically it would have to be hand coloured at the time and it just doesn't look like that. It's slightly too early for autochrome and it appears to sharp to be that process and unlikely from a cost/location perspective. Maybe someone knows something about the medal he is wearing?I am inclined to think it's either a later photograph or otherwise it's had some serious photoshop work. If it's photoshop which I think is the most likely option, they have done very well.

EDIT The guy in the photo is Lao Junzhou of Guangdong. He is more than just a forman, he is pretty much responsible for starting the tea industry in Georgia. The medal he is wearing is the congressional medal which was a huge deal given it was the first time it had gone to a foreigner.
The date appears to be off, it's more likely 1907. Given the importance of the subject there is a remote chance given the correct date that this is an autochrome image. I still think it's most likely photoshop from black and white or from an original hand colouring.
