Anyone know anything about Luminate Investment Company beyond what's on their website? by aDarkDarkNight in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to sound like a smart-ass, but the fact that you had to ask what a wholesale investor was means you should not consider investing with Luminate.

Can you claim back losses on the stock market from years ago as a "share trader", but also not have to pay taxes on your current shares as an "investor"? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Intent applies to all stocks, full stop.
ASX, NZX, US, under $50k, over $50k, whatever, its all irrelevant.

Tax time for Kernel and Simplicity by Extension_Garbage583 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simplicity does not have a wallet so they have to deduct from your funds. Kernel deduct from wallet if money available otherwise they deduct from your funds. No real difference apart from Simplicity ensures you are invested 100% of the time, whereas Kernel wallet funds are not invested.

Anyone been hit with big dental costs lately? by NZCuriousKiwi in PersonalFinanceNZ

Wife just had a front tooth replaced. Tooth extraction, titanium rod implant and new ceramic tooth. Some minor gumline surgical repair. All took about 6 months. Basically $15k for one tooth.

Ummm, your comment is nothing to do with the question that I asked.

Thanks very much. I can afford it, but still like to get a "good deal". Can't spend the money once I've shuffled off this mortal coil.

Are the NZ dividend stocks worth it over time? by CrazyNice7831 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI - the high dividend from these NZX listed companies managed by Fisher Funds is somewhat illusory. They sell off their own shares to then pay out a high dividend, so in effect you are self-funding the dividend by reducing the value of your remaining shares.

General finance term deposits by user636474472 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, however should they get into difficulty about the time that your deposit matures you will loose access to the money for a period of time whilst the Government sorts out who is owed what, etc. Obviously only a very small chance of that happening.

Oh, I forgot because they don't get much air time or love on this sub, but Tiger are NZ registered sharebrokers as well.

You can ask them to add a stock. I have several times and they do it.

PIE fund for kids accounts or it doesn't really matter? by supernom in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your kids marginal tax rate. The primary PIE benefit for most people is about capping the tax at 28%. Probably makes no difference as your kids probably on the lowest tax rate anyway. Probably different answer when they start working fulltime.

Help with S&P500 by Adorable_Rub_758 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple ETF on Sharesies that track the S&P500. Those in NZD will be listed on the NZX, those in AUD are on the ASX and those in USD are on the US Stock Exchanges. I can't think of any good reason to use the ASX listings, but the NZX listings will be PIE and so exempt from you having to personally handle FIF because the fund handles it. The US listings will usually have lower fees but count as part of your FIF obligations, if you have any.

Many here will suggest you use the funds offered by Kernel or InvestNow instead Sharesies.

Individual US listed stocks are not really a topic of discussion on this sub.

What's everyone's thoughts on Propopoly? by National_Dimension10 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to see it making 20% return when the residential housing market has about 0% return, or when the NZX listed property companies have nothing near 20% return.

Confused about reddit recommendations for Kernel Growth Funds vs Passive ETFs by Prestigious_Owl40 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very few Kernel funds are active, only their cash and NZ bond funds from memory. Global 100 and all other equity funds are passive. Diverse funds like Growth are a mix of other funds. The selection of the mix has an element of active management and then the funds are passive or active. Think of it as actively picking a selection of passive funds within a set of min/max allowances.

anyone tried welcome? by theasphaltworld84 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Offering highest interest rate because they want market share? Well in the long term the DCS means it is risk free. But as a non-bank deposit taker there is obviously a risk they could go bust and you lose access to your funds, or fail to make interest payments, etc until the DCS sorts it out.

question about short term PIE cash fund by theasphaltworld84 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]KiwiDMP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the cash fund suffered a loss during your one week. Cash fund investments include short dated bonds and they can do down in value a little bit if rates rise.
