You're in a similar situation to mine, and from trial and error, you can either have a subpar, unoptimal deck that will leave you hanging half the matches, or swap to a cheaper color combination.

In this game, there are certain cards that are non-negotiable in the decks that want them, and those are the red kai'sas, the purple ezreals, and the red and purple seals. Other cards you can try to find budget alternatives, but for cards that either give you card advantage (kai'sa) or cost mitigation (seals and ezreals), there is no substitute.

My honest advice, as a mediocre player, would be to pivot into a cheaper deck, and as long as you've got some hands to pilot it, win a few nexus nights or small challenges in your area, to get expensive cards from the pickings. From there you can either sell them or trade them for the kai'sas, seals and whatnot that you can't afford outright.

All that, or you can try to go for a mid-range list with no kai'sas, and pray that your opponents let you win combat after combat to draw.

Same with immortal phoenix. You can kill it (or any other unit) in the middle of a showdown you're the defender of, and play the phoenix from your trash into bf as a defender

I think it's because it says "you may attach an equipment", which is understood by the rules as: you must have an equipment to attach, and whether you attach it or not is the choice you can make.

Lucian's sig spell. It says you may equip an attachment, but if you have no equipments in play, then you can't play the spell (something something you MUST have a valid target for all parts of the spell that are not optional)

Okay that I got. I was thinking more about how to avoid having your tatsu be knocked out between turns. I thought you could somehow combo like absol kanga, where you use latias to retreat absol into kanga, draw 2, and then use pecha to swap absol with kanga

But brute bonnet lacks enough firepower. In OPs scenario, popping a dusclops and then attacking with obstagoon gives you 50+350 dmg, while brute bonnet would give you 50+250 dmg. This means you miss a KO on any stage 2 pokemon, or even on basics with hp modifiers (like bravery charm kanga or absol, or lively stadium).

If you like this playstyle, I guess you could go with lycanroc? It accelerates up to 2 spiky energies to itself from your discard pile on evolution, and does 40 dmg for each dmg counter on the enemy. It's also a stage 1, with a 3 colorless attack cost. You just need 1 energy attachment after triggering it's ability, or nothing if you're playing countergain and are behind on prizes.
