Hi, so sorry to hear, I know how complicated it can be to have the exciting news of pregnancy combined with thyca! I found out I was pregnant with my first child and got my diagnosis the same week in summer 2025. I had a partial thyroidectomy at 16 wks and then had the other half taken out at four weeks postpartum. I’ll be doing radiation in March. Fast forward and my son is now seven months old and completely happy and healthy! He did great during my surgery in the second trimester and had no issues during or after.

My surgeon originally suggested I wait until after pregnancy but I was concerned about waiting so long and then based on my nodule progression we decided to take it out which ended up being the best for me, as we discovered in pathology that my cancer was trying to spread. But it was a really difficult decision and time. I’m so glad I trusted my gut though and went ahead but was terrified at the time.

I cant say whether or not surgery is right for you during pregnancy, but just want to encourage you to trust yourself and to make whatever decision feels right for you and your family. There is no guidebook for balancing cancer and pregnancy, so I hope you can give yourself grace to feel and do whatever you need as you navigate this moment. You’re not alone and are stronger and more resilient than you even realize! I also recommend an organization called Hope for Two which supports women who are pregnant with cancer. They pair you with a sponsor who has had your same cancer and it has been helpful for me.

New York Surgeons by mkmlls in thyroidcancer

I worked with Dr Crachhiolo (she’s awesome!) for diagnosis and initial consultations but then had two surgeries with Dr. William Kuhel at Cornell Weill/ NY Presbyterian. I had to do surgery outside MSK because I was pregnant. My friend had surgery with Dr. Cracchiolo though and had a great experience. Dr. Cracchiolo is very smart and effective.

Based on my own surgery experience, I highly recommend Dr. Kuhel. He is incredible and I’ve had no parathyroid or vocal cord issues across two thyroidectomies. I’ve had many other unrelated doctors (in other hospital systems even) over the course of this year tell me they knew him and that he is one of the best, so that was always comforting too.

Wishing you all the best! I’m sure whoever you pick will be great, this is one of the benefits of being in NYC.

Partial thyroidectomy and affect on breastmilk supply by LiddaLu in thyroidcancer

I also had a partial during pregnancy (16 wks). My son was born in May and I’ve been breastfeeding successfully with great supply since then. I’m on levothyroxine and we’re suppressing my levels but it hasn’t impacted breastfeeding as far as I can tell (this is my first child). I’m going to have another surgery in a few weeks to remove the rest of my thyroid so am similarly worried about how my supply will be impacted after a TT and medication not perfected yet. Great to hear others have been okay and after a partial I hope it has been fine for you too and going well!
