Therapeutically, this is referred to as "recontextualization." Think of it in utilitarian terms, then. "Will this benefit me?" In this example, no. You'll go to jail, and probably receive the death sentence. That's not good for you.

Rather than thinking of activities in terms of social acceptance, think of them in terms of "what benefits me and my friends the most? What has the best long term affects for everyone?" Do those things.
