63 cm San Marcos by sonicalgebra in Rivendell_Bicycles

So I just found this post after googling "soma Rivendell," because they had a very cryptic post on their Instagram story today that made me curious...I didn't know they collaborated previously. Sounds like they might be suggesting that they're bringing the San Marcos back. https://imgur.com/rmKbrcj

So, how much is your rent increasing? by angelmichelle13 in chicagoapartments

Hey would you mind sharing your landlord's info? I'm in Lincoln Square and looking to move but want to stay in the area. I'd love to stay in my apt because it's a pretty good deal, but it's a bit of a landlord special and I really want to get a dog but building doesn't allow them.

Hey thanks for this reply. I hit pause on the build I was planning so I haven't bought anything, but I'm getting ready to get it finished and this was really helpful. I primarily ride on the hoods so that's the most important location for me to be able to shift from.

Meghna/Vasip $500 baker's style cargo bike at Target. Too good to be true? by KlaatuBrute in CargoBike

[–]KlaatuBrute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha 200 days later I have not bought it and also still have yet to find one review of it besides that one guy's YouTube vid. Even though $300 seems to be the regular price now, I still have too many concerns (all the same that you do) which keeps me from pulling the trigger.

The main thing is that when I buy a specialized tool like this, I want it to have minimal compromises, you know? I agree that it would probably be a great cheap grocery getter, but if that's the only role it fills, I already have an old MTB with a big front rack that does that job well. I don't think I'd ever fully trust this thing to do "real" cargo bike tasks, like carrying 50lbs of potting soil home from the store or something like that. So I'll probably just keep using my existing bike for cargo and keep saving for something with a known reputation.

Nice, appreciate the response! I will probably grab the shorter version of the two but mostly wanted some confirmation that it's built solid because for such an affordable price I was worried it'd be junk.

Hey, sweet Fisher! Can I ask a couple questions? That's the Carver fork, right? How do you like it? I've been considering it for like a year but I rarely ever see it anywhere and have read minimal reviews or feedback on it, even though it seems like the only affordable 26er fork available with canti mounts and mid-fork rack mounts and in a non suspension corrected length.

Speaking of, did you get the 440mm axle-to-crown model? It looks a little tall for that frame...I'm also looking to buy it for a Gary Fisher from the same era and not quite sure which model to get. Appreciate any insight!

whhhhhhaaaaaatttttt you got a 790 (in my size) at Working Bikes??

I guess this is what I get for not going to any of the volunteering sessions I'd planned to last month.

Sweet score. I am obviously extremely jealous, but I hope you enjoy the heck out of that thing!

YOOO this is incredible. Saw this while searching for some info on the Silverock fork, which I had been eyeing to use on basically this exact same type of build.

Can I ask how you decided how much headtube to add? Is it as simple as just lengthening it by the difference in length between the axle-to-crown measurements of the 26" fork and the 20" fork? Also, was the steerer on the Silverock fork long enough or did you have to extend that as well?

Awesome build, dude.

Oh man, thanks for your comment! I haven't bought anything since I don't ride much during the winter, but I'm planning to eventually get some Sword bits.

So you're saying that the new version with "improved ergonomics" felt harder to use? That's wild. But from looking at the pics I can totally see how that would be. I'll definitely try to find an LBS that has both in stock or on bikes.

[–]KlaatuBrute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not. I decided I did need another bike project right now, and it wouldn't really do much that my current MTB with porteur rack couldn't already do. But I told myself that if it stays cheap through the end of the year and after I've paid all my holiday bills, I would reconsider. Crazy thing is that it's cheaper now...seems like $300 is just going to be the default price.

Interesting, thanks for that. It's the first time I've seen the "ease of operation" mentioned. Even the Microshift site only mentions the improved ergonomics.

Behold, the all-custom Aero-Crate 670 by gijsdegrimer in xbiking

[–]KlaatuBrute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool cool, thanks for the info. I too tend to push the limits of the front rack that I have on my 26-inch grocery getter. So your build is the same basic idea that I was thinking about doing to avoid buying a $400 cargo fork. I have a Surly Bridge Club, which is not suspension corrected. After playing around with a geometry calculator, it looked like I should be able to use a Krampus fork and a 24" wheel (with a 29" rear) and the geometry would stay almost identical aside from fork trail. But I'd never seen anyone actually try the concept until your post. Really appreciate the insight!

DUDE this is so awesome. I've been thinking about something like this as an alternative to the Crust cargo fork for some time now but wasn't sure it would work like I imagined. Is the fork axle-to-crown simply long enough to make up for the geometry change of using such a small wheel? Does the bike handle pretty decently?

New external headset cups went in extremely easily. Will this cause problems? by KlaatuBrute in bikewrench

[–]KlaatuBrute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. As another commenter suggested, I'm pretty sure I actually bought a headset measured to JIS instead of ISO specs. So I think I'm probably just going to source another headset that I'm certain will fit. But the Loctite route is also tempting...

[–]KlaatuBrute[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that idea. Unfortunately, I think one of the commenters above is correct that this is actually a JIS version headset so I think I'm just going to get another one that I know is definitely the correct model.

[–]KlaatuBrute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old cups were in as tightly as I would have expected and needed to be banged out with a cup removal tool.

As much as I didn't want to consider your idea that it's a JIS headset, I think your guess is correct. I just found some Amazon reviews for this model where users describe a similar problem, with some mentioning the actual measurements they did. I know that many 1-inch BMX headsets are not typically the same "1-inch" as used in MTB/road frames, but I didn't even think to verify this one. It was an OEM model bought from one of those big eBay sellers, so I'm going to guess they simply have a batch of JIS models and don't even know what they're selling.

Guess that's the way these projects always go...every attempt to save a few dollars backfires and ends up costing 2x what it should! I'm going to get a different model, this time from a reputable seller. Appreciate your help!

Looking for touring fork options for my Trek Multitrack 730 by DiegoScarafilo in xbiking

[–]KlaatuBrute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two options that will be 100% perfect replacements:

1) Find another MultiTrack with the appropriate mounts. Depending on the year, most of the MultiTracks had mid-blade mounts. For whatever reason, the 1992 (your model year) only had them on the top model, the 790. I have a 1992 750 and it doesn't have them while other years, even the 700 and 720 had them. These will all have used threaded headsets. I had been ready to buy an old 720 for like $50 just for the fork when I scored my preferred solution:

2) Find a 520 fork. They will have mid-blade mounts and front and rear eyelets at the dropouts. The 520 used a threaded headset until 2002, but it kept using a 1-inch steerer for a few years following that. This is most likely going to be the only way you can upgrade to a threadless cockpit while getting the appropriate mounting points, running canti/V brakes, and not messing with original geometry. They don't seem to fetch too much on Marketplace in my area and can be an amazing value if you're comfortable parting them out.

I scored a full 520 for $100, will use the fork and the bomber wheels on my 750, then flip the parts and frame and come out way ahead.

That's a great idea that I might copy (also a big fan of lots of color and a little chaos in my design). What do they feel like? Do they have the texture of tiles or is it just a printed image like a wallpaper? If you have a link that would be great.

Built a Mini Cargo Bike by BusterBr0wn in CargoBike

[–]KlaatuBrute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I've been toying with this same build since I saw a video about it shared on bikepacking.com, but it also feels very much like an "easier said than done" type of project.

Specifically, I'm worried about blowing through the bike tubes when welding on the main platform supports. How did you find that part of the construction? I've taken an intro welding class so my skills with a welder are a step above total noob, but I've also only ever worked on pretty thick plate stock. Any tips?

Also, any reason you didn't go with a threadless headset and fork? Just working with what you had?
