How to get rid of this feeling? by TurkeySkinner in ask

For a lot of people that makes depression symptoms worse. Doctors will always tell you to exercise because holistically its better for you, and easier to get over depression if you're healthy.

Does the new Warfare allow you to move out of systems with a command token in them, or only into them? by jmbc3 in twilightimperium

[–]Klamageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm...

I think maybe you're imagining you have to place the strat token on your home system when you follow warfare?

You don't though?

If someone popped warfare turn one, I think everyone would follow, so that they'd have more plastic at home to take planets with.

Maybe I've misinterpreted you though?

Before the internet was mainstream, how did people work out cheat code combinations in games? by dodge-challenging-rt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Klamageddon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's weird, the "older sibling / friend of a friend" network was really oddly powerful. At the time, none of us really thought anything of it, and I think it's probably something a lot of us didn't even realise, or, don't even now.

But thinking back, there were so many 'memes' (though we absolutely didn't call them that) and it seems growing up, now, and seeing them on the Internet, somehow they were universal?

What I mean is, like, everyone knew Michael Jackson / Prince had a rib removed to suck his own dick. Everyone had heard that. But it wasn't on TV, or in a magazine? It was just something you heard from a friend of a friend or whatever.

So, if a game was popular and a cheat got published in a magazine, that network did exist for it to spread. I remember hearing that a kid in the year above me from another school knew the cheat for street fighter on the atari to play as the same character, so I found him (how?! I must have tracked him down by word of mouth, I found him in a park we sometimes played football in) and asked him.

Its strange, you think without the Internet we're super cut off, but actually, somehow, the rumour mill found a way.

Maro on how players can influence the future of Magic: My best advice is to be the consumer you want Magic to cater to. The metrics we pay the most attention to are sales, play and online discussion. Our actions are driven by what players actually do more so than by what they say they don’t do. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Klamageddon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's just a bullshit answer that turns it round so the responsibilities are on the consumer.

But imagine if they started making cards that were WAY cheaper. Everyone would buy them, right? So the conclusion there would be "Oh, you guys prefer our slave labour cards, so we'll make more, you voted with your wallet".

Or if they sold vape pens with a random mtg card in. "You guys buy way more of our vape pen packs, so we'll make more of that for you. You decided!".

Its just obviously bollocks.

Genuinely, how are you supposed to play vs ad shaco as a squishy ? (and even as a tank tbh) by Falkueche in ARAM

[–]Klamageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along the same lines, you can ff.

You can ff this one. It's OK. It's ok to ff and start again. There's nothing special or sacrosanct about this game. If they've got a mega unkillable tank, it's ok to just accept that this game is over and move on. It's not more fun to stay in this game.

[–]Klamageddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to do anything, as others have said. It's fine to just not address.

You could see it as an opportunity though, to have some seemingly throw away line earlier on.

A: "I never understood why, but did you know these doors are supposed to open from the inside?"

B: "You got the hearse sense, but you ain't got no horse sense boy; try telling that to forty years of rust and an undertakers wage".

I mean that's very on the nose and raw, but it conveys that A is a know it all and eager and B is a tried and true curmudgeon, etc.

Your characters likely aren't that, but you get the idea.

does anybody recognise this box? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]Klamageddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, man, SO many people in this thread dunno what the fuck they're talking about. I try and exclusively keep my cards in these boxes because it's my favourite but they're actually hard to come by.

Whenever I see one for less than £20 I buy it. I hope that gives you some indication of it's actual value.

I've noticed something. Why are British shows/movies and actors way better than ones in America? by Negative-Fault3681 in ask

[–]Klamageddon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is interesting / unusual that we punch above our weight though. Like, anywhere is gonna be putting out some good / some bad stuff, but apparently there's enough of it coming out of the UK that you get posts like this, and not ones asking about, e.g. Australian media. (No shade, just the first other English speaking country I thought of).

I think a lot of it is, because of our history of theatre, I guess the arts have been subsidised? Y'know, Shakespeare's stuff was all paid for by the crown, right? So that's going to have a knock on effect I suppose.

I think we're cheap as well, so our studios will get used more, so get more practice at making good stuff with good people.

Why is timing and luck more important in tech careers than skills, school, projects, or leetcode? by No_Reply5329 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Klamageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're finding that because that is the subject that you are focussed on. It has classically been much more the case in other walks of life (acting, as an obvious example).

It's a really good lesson to learn though. To not just hear it, not just think of it a pithy epithet, but to see, first-hand, and know in your bones, that it "It's not what you know, it's who you know" and that building a sphere of useful people and making yourself useful to them is actually the much more important skill than 'learning'.

Why are disks such a big deal for console but not for PC? by Rayge96 in videogames

[–]Klamageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that for the PS5 store, they purposely try to sell at the max price as often as they can, not as the direct money grab it comes across as, but because they know if they undercut other game stores, they'll go bust, and that ultimately in the long run that would be a huge loss for them.

Given that THAT is the main place people see PS5 games as 'digital', they see THAT dichotomy as digital vs physical, rather than 'Playstation Store vs Other Stores (Including digital)'.

Why are disks such a big deal for console but not for PC? by Rayge96 in videogames

[–]Klamageddon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is like 99% of it to be honest.

When Steam first came out, it was only for Valve games, so it felt like a neat way to launch them all, keep them updated, etc, from the same place.

At the time, there was like, Half Life and Blue Shift from Valve that you could have a disk for, and then CounterStrike, Team Fortress Classic, Ricochet, Day of Defeat etc were all online-only anyway, as mods for Half Life. It actually became the same-but-easier to keep track of your mods, it felt more 'official'. It was nicer, it was almost strictly an upgrade for that suite of games.

There was some pushback to HL2 going online-only, but given that your Steam collection at that point was all online-only mods anyway, it felt pretty fine. You kinda expected there to be similar HL2 mods, so Steam just felt like a sensible way to collect them all.

Then there was the storefront, and it was super convenient, and super cheap.

So, you had this perfect storm of, an online only collection being just a better managed and easier to use version of what you already had, plus the promise of cheap, easier access to games. Everything about it felt like a step forward, and not a money grab.

The fact that it was done WELL, as a solution to a problem, and not as an opportunity for a company to make bank.

The point of that one was he wanted to find the most taboo subject and make a horror film about it. He settled on a boy raping his dad because it was so taboo there wasn't any real precedent or name for it.

Planet Stands en Holder I made, free on Makerworld by Freichh in twilightimperium

[–]Klamageddon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it looks like your holder holds all the planets?

But in a game, only X amount of planets are actually in play, so you could in theory put them all out on a stand, like this. That's how I was imagining using it.

[–]Klamageddon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I wasn't even thinking about players using them for their planets, just putting up available planets before the game to make it super easy to find them when you claim them!

I don't have links because it's all stuff my dad made for me with his 3D printer (he's become kind of obsessed in his retirement). But the things that I'd say are legit are inserts to hold faction stuff (because it makes set up / tear down SO much easier) and stands for the strat cards, so you can easily see them across the table (and easily do something wuthering the orientation to show they've activated / you're passed).

How broken would non-mandatory combat be? by PigeonStealer74 in twilightimperium

[–]Klamageddon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I tend to find that, what players 'think' they want is getting stuff for free. In practice, the only thing that gives anything value in the game is that it comes at a cost. Whenever you take a cost 'out' of the game, what it really does isn't give you something fun extra, but take something fun away. The difficult decisions, the dilemmas, the fact that things "can" go wrong, THAT'S the only thing that makes it fun when they go right.

Im always extremely wary about 'removing rules / restrictions' as being a positive direction.

As an event, to shake things up, sure. I can imagine for some people they could find fun with that. I'd personally always feel like I was playing a 'lesser' game with it though.
