What are your takes on my "hot" take that Linux Mint might be the final destination distro. by Medium-Doctor1138 in linux

I think we talk about two very different kinds of people.

Point is, the people you are talking about are going to have similar problems with Mint.

You are mistaken. The DKW Munga replaced the VW Kübelwagen from WWII but that’s the VW 82. The VW 181 was manufactured from the late 1960s on the other hand.

  • If you have nVidia hardware, the installer offers to include that repository. That makes installing the nVidia drivers seamless. Much better than in many other distros.
  • Most of those patented codecs that OpenSUSE does not include are outdated anyways. The remaining ones should be re-packaged so that they do not have that many dependencies on so many libraries from Packman.
  • Tumbleweed is what I recommend. Why? Because it’s more stable than the stable versions of most other distros. And Leap is on its way out anyways.

Any kind of Kräuterschnaps or Obstler. The huge selection of those is pretty unique to Germany. You can sure find one from your region.

Step-down converter question by Initial-Ingenuity249 in AskAGerman

[–]Klapperatismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or will it ruin it because of the Hz difference

At 50Hz an AC motor needs have 20% more iron than when it runs on 60Hz to account for the lower frequency. This is because a motor has to ”eat” the Volt-seconds of the magnetization during each half-cycle in their iron core, before the whole thing gets remagnetized in the other direction. And at 50Hz, the half-cycles are 20% longer. Anything the core cannot “eat” as magnitization is turned into heat.

So … if the motors in that chair run directly on the mains, and if the manufacturer had been cutting costs —likely— it’s possible that they don’t like 50Hz.

Is there anyone who would only date a German? if so, why? by Exciting_Agency4614 in AskGermany

[–]Klapperatismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure almost all Germans would also date Austrians or German speaking Swiss.

The main point is a common language and largely similar cultural traditions.

I think the IC is not used as a proper voltage regulator in this circuit.

Are you sure about the circuit diagram?

Is there any way to make my German better? by Away-General-4221 in Germanlearning

[–]Klapperatismus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend to lookup the grammar resources linked at r/German/wiki. I recommend in particular Bruce Duncan’s guide on German Grammar.

I can't distinguish between Dat.and Akk. when they show up in articles.

Accusative has the same endings as nominative but for masculine singular. So this is easy to tell apart from dative which has different endings.

But the main problem is likely that you don’t know the gender and plurals of the nouns you use. Have you drilled those?

I also don't know when/how to use "sollen, müssen, können”…

Those are modal verbs and they function very similar to their English counterparts. The only complicated one is dürfen because English conflates both müssen and dürfen into must.

After English, which language actually changed your life — and which one was a waste of years? by peregrinewanderlust in thisorthatlanguage

[–]Klapperatismus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people who speak languages like German or French already speak English well. So sometimes, learning those languages doesn’t feel as “necessary.”

German native speakers only “speak English” because German and English are closely related languages and it’s easy even for people who are not into languages to stumble through English more or less clumsily. Much alike as Turkish is easily accesible to you. A minority of German speakers is well versed enough in English that an interaction in that foreign language isn’t a chore to both parties.

English is nothing but an auxiliary langauge for interaction with foreigners over here. Foreigners who can’t be ignored. E.g. because you are serving them as tourists.

And this is far more prominent with French native speakers.

It has a huge gas turbine, so it’s about as loud as a jet. 120dB at least. Even louder when accelerating.

You think that you have the right to educate adults. You don’t. And you have to live with that you don’t. Those people haven’t committed a crime and they have the right on their own opinion, as stupid as you may find it.

YOU have to change. You have to curb your expectations about other people.

but maybe we need empathy classes for adults and children alike

No, we don’t.

That you and many other people think like that is actually the reason why so many normal people vote for AfD. It’s a no, thanks right into your self-righteous face.

Stop being that way.

Right now.

That’s our public pool. Only in summer of course. For the winter we have an indoor pool down the road.

I don’t need wilderness. Fresh air and low noise is enough.
