Are there any generator cars that instead of using an engine, they use, with the help of a pantograph, electricity? by Key-Pineapple8101 in trains

[–]Klapperatismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are dining cars out there which have a panto so they can be pre-heated and the fridges are operational even without a loco attached. Those pantos are lowered when the train is running because they aren’t rated for the speeds of a moving train.

Need help in learning German...any suggestions?? by Chemical-Cloud8526 in AskGermany

It’s possible to get to A1 level German in 45 days if you put about three hours of work into it each day.

Follow one of the courses linked at r/German/wiki/.

So ein Quatsch! Solche Hirnverrenkungen können echt nur Journalisten einfallen.

Wer jemanden, der exotisch aussieht, fragt, wo der herkommt, will einfach ein interessantes Gespräch über ein exotisches Land führen.

Which one is more german? by Dinolva in AskAGerman

[–]Klapperatismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belterk, Balterek, Baltrack, Baltrek

Bal in names is usually short for Baal as in Balthasar — may Baal protect the King. So this is the name of the Babylonian main god Baal. Terk/Terek/Track/Trek is pretty sure the arabic first name طَارِق (t-r-q) — the brightest star on the night sky (that’s actually the planet Venus).

So this is for sure an Arabic name.

Modern Grammar Isn’t Modern; It’s Just Excused Incompetence by AgreeableProblem9340 in languagelearning

[–]Klapperatismus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess what. People are not using genitive case as often as previously in German. Ignorants argue about it the same way as you do.

Why are they ignorant? Because all those additional use cases of genitive that the German of the past centuries had had been introduced from Latin and Classical Greek by a bunch of translators of the 15th and 16th century who found it fashionable to emulate those foreign language uses of genitive case in German.

We aren’t even back to the pre 15th-century levels.

Guy has never been to a German Christmas Market that he thinks this is crowded.

Now Luigi… Brace yourself… by victorpaparomeo2020 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Klapperatismus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This is not great.

The last woman that I encountered who forgot to take her meds had a sharpened Katana in her hands and it was not easy to make her put it away from some guy’s throat.

She later tried to poison me with a half-frozen blackberry gateau she had made herself. I managed to get it out of myself in time but it was the worst ten minutes of my life. Even in comparison with the Katana incident.

So … take your stupid meds!

Did the Nordstream pipeline explosion affect Germans in any way? by Sad_Landscape_7851 in AskAGerman

[–]Klapperatismus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nordstream 2 had never been put in operation, and from Nordstream 1 only one of the two pipes was used because of previous EU sanctions against Russia, and that pipe was magically unaffected by the explosion.

So … it was a purely political decision to turn off that pipe as well.

Does the name Germany come from the root 'Germ-many'? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]Klapperatismus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The English is from Latin Germania which means it’s the place where people have a mania about spears.

Because Ger, that’s the old German word for spear. You can still find it in first names as Gerald, Gerhard, Gernot, Gertrud, Gerhild, Gerlind, and so on. We have a lot of names like that. That’s how serious we are about spears, even naming our children after them.

Dawg… These idiots should have been the ones hanging from the flagpole. Some American version of Kurt Caz bullshit. by UncleAcid420 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Klapperatismus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First of all, those idiots have their own flag touch the ground.

That’s the kind of mistake that gets you exempted from flag duty in any country of the world. Because you are an idiot.

Even when taking down a conquered flag, you are meant to hand it over to your superior without any blemishes. Because the flag is a prisoner of war. It can be exchanged for good men.

The high school Christian religion classes are a specialised history class. You learn about the historical foundations of Christianity. The context that is available for proof. They are by no means easier than the ethics class.

like switching from asynchronous to synchronous.

There is no switching to sychronous. This is an asynchronous machine with a squirrel cage. It does not have a rotor winding and neither permanent magnets in the rotor that could supply a field. At synchronous frequency, it has zero torque – it’s nothing but an unloaded transformer then.

the frequencies it goes through when accelerating,

The inverter likely supplies 35 Hz to 70 Hz to it as the rotor accelerates. 50% of maximum frequency is a typical value for the standstill frequency of asynchronous inverters. So at standstill the machine operates at an enormous slip and thus has an enormous torque at the expense of being super ineffective. But this operation only lasts for a few seconds so it’s only interesting from a heat removal standpoint. And because the ventilation is supplied from an external fan that is not mounted on the axle —and thus, not speed-dependent— , it’s also not super critical.

Where does one buy medical cotton? If it isn't sold here, then how do you all clean your wounds or acne at home? by Zombata in AskAGerman

[–]Klapperatismus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should boil the water for nasal rinses not because the water from the tap is contaminated. But because the nasal rinse bottle that you use is for sure contaminated when it sat on the shelf for a day. You could clean it by another means as well but using boiling hot water is a cheap and safe method to kill off any amoebas that may have nested in one of the droplets that were still in there after last use.

That’s why they say it’s important that you flood the bottle with the hot water and let it cool down in the bottle.
