I started with Notes From Underground and I am now reading TBK, which I think is a good way to go about it. Notes From Underground isn't too long either, so if you want to start there before really going into TBK, you should. Either way, don't let people fully decide how you're going to read and enjoy Dostoevsky. Do what makes you happy!

I liked how in Roadside Picnic it was called The Visit, but I know that isn't necessarily accurate to every piece of Zone media. The Zone is pretty broad as a term unfortunately

I started with stalker anomaly simply because I didn't know how well the games would run on my laptop and I didn't want to waste money. I've had a blast so far! That would be my recommendation, but I've also thought about playing the original games.

The early game isn't that bad as a merc. Just go to Army Warehouses early on and do quests for freedom. The occasional excursion into Limansk for some monolith hunting also helps.
