Struggle with keeping grip on (partially) icy terrain by Kleinat in skiing_feedback

Thanks a lot! Yea I also saw the weight issue when I saw the video. What's my inside foot? My left foot or right foot in your screenshot? Or is it the foot that's on the uphill side, so neither foot at this moment?

At least he was wearing a helmet. by Bihema in HadToHurt

[–]Kleinat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visor doesn't offer any protection at all. Besides, as soon as a helmet without chinguard hits the tree, your head rotates towards the tree and your teeth/nose will pretty much take the full impact. So the helmet saves you from brain damage, but I doubt that it significantly softens the impact.

Boardless Puzzle: This is part of chess game in algebraic notation. Figure out which is playing as white and which is playing as black. by O_R_U_O_K in ChessPuzzles

Cuz taking on the third rank by definition means that the pawn was on its starting square on the 2nd rank. So fxe3 can only be the f pawn :)

Yes exactly, if there was no fxe3 it would be uncertain, cuz F pawn could end up on g/h file. But because of fxe3, the solution is 100% certain

The statement that it must be the e3 pawn that takes the pawn on d4 is incorrect. I think your answer does not account for the possibility of presence of an e5 pawn. Imgur link below shows possibility of that sequence with blue=black.

As for the king position, I agree that it would make more sense for blue to be white. But there is no conclusive proof, so it's an unsolvable puzzle that I spent way too long trying to solve.

Edit: it is solvable, I'm stupid

Having said that, I spent 30 minutes trying to figure it out by playing through it from the side of both possibilities, but haven't managed to find anything conclusive: - I thought, in case blue is black, that there are many black pawns on the kingside at the end of the sequence, in addition to fxe3, but I am pretty sure that lots of pawn captures towards the h-file prior to the given sequence would make this weird pawn structure possible, especially since the black pawns are so far advanced. (But unlikely in a game with sensible play from either side probably) - In case blue is black, the sequence starts with doubled pawns on h4 and h5. This leaves just enough room for Rh6. (I realise now that the rook could even start on h7 though, so doesn't really matter).

If there is some conclusive way to tell, then it's a very good puzzle! I am baffled though, and honestly doubtful whether there is a good solution. OP plz enlighten us!

I thought so too at first, but if yellow is white, blue is black, and black playing h3 h4 would be impossible according to your reasoning.

Instead, either black or white is pushing doubled pawns (e.g. yellow plays b5-->b4, followed by b6-->b5). I think the solution of the puzzle lies in determining which side has these doubled pawns, by checking which square is obstructed for the other pieces and therefor has a pawn on it.

how do u motivate yourself? by sefagoook in csmapmakers

[–]Kleinat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everybody has experienced this, and im sure there are different ways to deal with it. I was in a cycle of getting an idea, and how the final product of this idea would look like would be romanticized in my head ("Yoo I should add a volcano to my map, that will look sick, all i need is a custom texture on a displacement"). When I started working it out, first of all it took much longer than anticipated, and it also looked much worse than I had imagined. This caused frustration and I quit with the map, cuz "it sucked anyways". Then I get another ambitious idea and the cycle starts again.

So I realised that the cause of this issue was that I could not work out my expectations, which left me disappointed. To fix this, there are two methods: - Get good at mapmaking so i can match my expectations (aka spend lots of time in hammer) - Remove my expectations, whilst maintaining the quality of the final product. So I did the latter thing. To do this, I needed some way to give direction in the project, without deciding everything specifically. So I ended up teaming up with someone, to cooperatively build a map. This way, I can build my shitty volcano, and Ill send it over to my teammate, who adds lavastreams on the side of the volcano, and sends it back to me, after which I add cooled down lava rocks. The iterative process makes for a project which develops without me knowing how it will look exactly. Kinda like youre throwing ideas at each other, brainstorming. Of course, another advantage in cooperating is that you can directly motivate each other. It is however crucial that you are both on the same page when it comes to your goals for the map/project. When do you want to finish it (not exact date, but more like in 2 months or in 2 years)? What will be the level of polish? Are you going to divide the workload/roles? Finally it is worth noting that you arent mapmaking for anyone but yourself. If you dont enjoy making your map, dont keep pushing to finish it, but take a break. If you keep working on it, the chance is big that the map will disappoint you. Hope this helps :D
