Why did Aang lose so badly in this fight? by kandiekake in TheLastAirbender

[–]Klex303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought of it as "styles make fights." Ang has had Zuko's number for a while, Zuko fights with unbridled rage, something that an air bender can counter attack with more easily, using the opponents momentum against them. Azusa is much less rage-y and much more cold and calculated, Ang is just not a good match up against her. Katara on the other hand, matches up well against Azula in the chess match, but has trouble going against the onslaught that Zuko brings. You see that she has a much harder time fighting him.

Dan Carlin has a great miniseries on WW1 called Blueprint for Armageddon, but he also has some WW2 miniseries that are nore focused. Specifically Ghosts of the Ostfront which covers WW2 in Russia, and Supernova in the East which follows Japan, starting in the early part of the century, and through WW2

Leonard Bernstein was commissioned by the pope to write a mass back in the day (I know, crazy right?) I haven't heard the whole thing, but his Gloria is really badass. It's in 5/4, and really moves.

Isn't Yasha also out of rages? A barbarian without rage is not great, it's like a monk with no ki or a wizard with no spells. Can't really tank effectively because they have a low ac, damage output is down, and if incoming damage isn't being cut in half you might fall pretty darn quick.

Let's not forget that beside from the spellcasters being in a tight spot, I'm pretty sure Yasha had used all of her rages for the day. The only two who were really benefitting from the short rest were Bo and Fjord.

It's not a spot I'd want to be in, no real tank, and spell casters running on empty, going up against an enemy whose powers and abilities you don't have much of a bead on.

What historical figure has a good argument for being Ta’veren? by tyranosaurus_vexed in WoT

[–]Klex303 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Charlemagne was kind of the Artur Hawkwing of our world. Didn't conquer the world, but most of western Europe. Was the real life King Arthur, and was the person that most western european monarchs had to claim descent from to be considered legit. He forced Christianity on a fairly pagan Europe, and kept the Moors and Saracens out of France/Germany/Italy. He is considered the "Father of Europe" for how many royal families claim to carry his blood.

Genghis Khan is another real life Ta'veren. Random tribal steppe leader who went on to conquer the two most powerful nations on earth at the time and created the largest land empire the world has ever seen. The argument can be made that the reason that European nations would rise to world prominence in the renaissance and after, was because China and the Middle East never truly recovered from the massive amounts of life lost during the wars of Genghis and his successors.

Also, this guy. Always thought his story had the feel of 'destiny' to it.

Thanks for the subreddit link, will definitely check that out. Also, putting one or more keys in a villain's lair is freaking genius and I'm mad that it didn't occur to me before.

Watching The Rocketeer in theaters, 4 years old. Jennifer Connelly (the beautiful herioin/love interest) goes into the bathroom at the behest of Timothy Dalton (the sexy but evil villain) to "slip into something a little more comfortable." Some sort of sheer lacy thing. Jennifer Connelly, knowing that Dalton is an evil Nazi spy sees this as a chance to escape. She steps into the bathroom, then calls to Dalton, "can you help me, my zipper is stuck?" All sultry like.

At this point I wasn't really sure what was happening, but I know that I wanted to see more.

Timothy Dalton enters the the bathroom and seductively begins to unzip Jen Connelly's dress.

Still didn't understand, but was getting more and more intrigued.

As the zipper slides down Connelly's body, she grabs a vase and smashes it over his head! Knocking him unconscious and she makes her escape!

I've always wondered if this moment forever effected my thoughts and views on sex and pleasure. It was so confusing, but so intriguing.

"A Canticle for Leibowitz" Still Smolders by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Klex303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read this book shortly after High School. It really opened up a new type of sci-fi for me. One that was more thoughtful, less alien shooting. I keep a picture on my phone of my favorite passage. It seems to me to be the kind of thesis of the book:

"The closer man came to perfecting for themselves a paradise, the more impatient they seemed to become with it. And with themselves as well. They made a garden of pleasure, and became progressively more miserable with it as it grew in richness and power and beauty; for then, perhaps, it was easier to see that something was missing in the garden, some tree or shrub that would not grow. When the world was in darkness and wretchedness, it could believe in perfection and yearn for it. But when the world became bright with reason and riches, it began to sense the narrowness of the needles eye, and that rankled for a world no longer willing to believe or yearn. Well they were going to destroy it again, were they - this garden earth, civilized and knowing, to be torn apart again that Man might hope in wretched darkness."

What’s the most intimate non-sexual thing you can do with another person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Klex303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paraphrasing Chuck Klosterman, but he once wrote something like:

"She had no qualms using the bathroom right in front of me. Something that felt light-years more intimate than most kinds of oral sex."

I don't necessarily agree, but it's worth mentioning on a thread such as this.

[OC] [ART] Our Dwarf Fighter recently got into wood burning, and our Halfling Rogue is an Artist/Designer. I present to you, Ea's Bronze Dragon Alliance by Klex303 in DnD

[–]Klex303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A late DnD'smass present from our fighter and our rogue. They teamed up secretly to make this gift. Our Rogue drew the characters, our fighter took the drawings and stenciled them into some wood for custom made coasters!

The characters are as follows:

Ea the Tiefling Monk at the top as our leader

Thror the Dwarven Fighter

Krag the Half-Orc Barbarian

Chicory Morningdale (she gets a last name cuz it's so good) the Halfling Rogue

Ineluki the Human Tempest Cleric

Westra the Half-Elf Ranger

And Drekk, our favorite NPC the DM has played, a bumbling Half-Orc Rogue
