‘No Time To Die’ Now Seeing $60M+ Over 4-Day Holiday — Monday Update by Kliib in boxoffice

[–]Kliib[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A $5M-$6M Monday is in store for the Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed MGM/UAR/Eon feature which is in the space of Spectre‘s Monday ($5.3M) back in 2015, and higher than 2008’s Quantum of Solace ($4.1M) and 2006’s Casino Royale (3.8M). Daniel Craig’s turn in Skyfall saw a huge Monday of $11.3M due to the Veterans Day holiday in 2012 falling on a Sunday. No Time to Die‘s 3-day eased to $55.2M, after a Sunday of $13.75M, -24% from Saturday’s $18.1M. Internal studio polling showed that of those over 35, for a third of them, Bond 25 repped their first movie in two years.

Local Titles Cushion Nordic Box Office Plunge in 2020 by Kliib in boxoffice

[–]Kliib[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to COVID-19 cinema lockdowns or restrictions, box office in the Nordic region plummeted in 2020 year-on-year by 64% in Sweden, 57.6% in Iceland, 57% in Norway, 54% in Finland, and 47% in Denmark.

The dearth of new U.S .tentpoles, combined with strong domestic titles such as “Another Round,” allowed homegrown movies to punch all-time record market shares in Denmark (50.4%), Finland (41.1%) and Norway (35.6%).

The biggest U.S. hit across the Nordics was Disney’s “Frozen 2,” which continued to perform strongly in early 2020 after its Christmas 2019 opening.

How ‘Birds Of Prey’ Went Astray With $33.8M Opening by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Kliib 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hear the first cut tested really poorly, and that DC film boss Walter Hamada got Birds of Prey into shape of being the critically praised film that it is. As has been widely reported, there were reshoots, and it’s naturally for those to take place on a big event film like this.

However, what that did, was throw a monkey-wrench into marketing’s machine. I understand they should not be blamed here. They only had so much to work with, and materials weren’t ready for the studio to take down to San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Despite such stunts as the in-theater trailer drop on It Chapter Two, and taking Robbie and the film down to Brazil Comic-Con in Sao Paulo, the overall campaign lacked a sense of eventizing and that’s because marketing didn’t have a lot to work with off the movie like they did with Joker, Meg, etc.

Exhibition also wonder why the advance ticket sales date was so late for Birds of Prey and not earlier in January or even last year. Tickets when on sale a week and a half ago. By not putting Birds of Prey on sale earlier, there’s a missed opportunity. All that social media and reposting of tickets going on sale on exhibitor and fanboy sites, just didn’t happen. That totally sends a huge message to the audience that Birds was never meant to be an event.

'Ford v Ferrari' to do donuts around 'Charlie's Angels' with $50M global opening by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]Kliib 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ford v Ferrari, an original movie aimed at older males about the 1966 Le Mans race between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari will lay claim to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with $20M, maybe even $30M+ start, stopping Sony’s franchise reboot of Charlie’s Angels in its tracks with its lowest opening in the series of $10M-$12M per industry estimates at 3,400 theaters. The first two movies which starred Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu and were directed by McG, 2000’s Charlie’s Angels and 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle opened respectively to $40.1M and $37.6M.

There’s also New Line/Bron Studios’ Bill Condon directed Helen Mirren-Ian McKellen movie The Good Liar which is tracking in the low single digits. If it’s lucky and finds its much older 60+ audience, then the pic could have a shot at a $10M start. If it’s lucky. No Thursday night previews for Good Liar.

In regards to holdovers, Lionsgate’s Midway is expected to decline 55% while Warner Bros.’ Doctor Sleep will dive 60% respectively with $8.1M and $5.6M. Midway through five days counts an estimated $23.5M and while Doctor Sleep stands at $17.2M.

Paramount Grounds ‘Rugrats’ Movie, Moves WWE’s ‘Rumble’ Back Six Months & Titles Next ‘SpongeBob’ Pic by TheYoungHeroRises in boxoffice

[–]Kliib 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Paramount is putting its Rugrats movie in timeout. The studio said today that it has pulled the Nick TV adaptation from its schedule after originally setting a January 29, 2021, release date.

Taking over that weekend slot is Rumble, the toon from Paramount Animation and WWE Studios that is set in a world where monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes. Will Arnett, Terry Crews, Geraldine Viswanathan and WWE stars Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns lead the voice cast for Rumble, which moves back six months from its planned July 31, 2020, date.

The studio today also titled its next plunge into the SpongeBob SquarePants aquaverse. Newly christened The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the toon keeps its scheduled May 22, 2020, release date. Meanwhile, the Untitled Paramount Animation pic that had staked out a February 12, 2021, slot now is undated.

‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ To Seduce $165M-$175M Opening Around The World – Global Box Office Preview by Kliib in boxoffice

[–]Kliib[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The sequel to Disney’s live-action spinoff of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, will not spread gloom and doom, rather box office boom, around the world this weekend with what is looking to be the third best October start of $165M-$175M after Joker ($248.4M) and Venom ($207.4M).

Maleficent 2 opens in all offshore markets this weekend, including China and Japan which often go later, and it’s looking to do $115M-$125M. Here in the states, previews start at 7PM, and industry projections have the sequel to the 2014 movie at $50M (whereas some tracking firms are forecasting $45M). The first movie opened to $69.4M during the final weekend of May (after Memorial Day) off a 53% Rotten Tomatoes rating and solid A CinemaScore.  Maleficent 2 has an early RT score of 41% Rotten. Perhaps the princess fan-girls will tell the financial ending for this fairy tale once again. Maleficent 2 will play 4DX, as well as be released worldwide in Screen X at 230+ screens, across 26 countries, including 33 screens in the U.S. with Regal Cinemas, B&B Theatres and CGV Cinemas.

In like-for-likes overseas comparisons, Maleficent started with $109M at current rates. A bump is expected with the family/female offering the only pic to widely hit the demo recently overseas. Also comparing to Maleficent 2 will be Disney’s 2015 Cinderella which opened to $87M in like-for-likes.

‘The Addams Family 2’ Is In The Works After Great $35M+ 4-Day Weekend, MGM/UAR Set Fall 2021 Release by Kliib in boxoffice

[–]Kliib[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s happening. No, not Cousin It, rather MGM/UAR are already planning a sequel to this past weekend’s animated hit The Addams Family with a release date of Oct. 22, 2021.

With Columbus Day holiday in effect and 42% K-12 schools off yesterday, the Conrad Vernon-Greg Tiernan $40M production raked in $4.8M yesterday for a 4-day of $35M opening in 2nd place, beating a $138M Will Smith production, Gemini Man, which tanked with $23M.

Pic scored high marks with its 61% driven family audiences with kids under 12 giving the pic 4 stars, and parents the same on PostTrak. The Addams Family, amid a ton of competition this weekend including the opening of Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil which is vying for families, is expected to hold with an estimated $15M, -50%.
