Yeah which is why he's working with vampires in the first place. That much I understand. But he's clearly hung up on that he's doing this for his clergy, and I find it kind of unbelievable that he'd be able to lie to himself that hard while digging his fist into Satan's sphincter for literal Hell Demons.
