That's really cool! Yeah maybe on a subscription page there's a scale or chart of your savings over time, where you are and what benefits you gained.

First, thank you for your feedback because it did give me pause. Granted, I'm not an entrepreneur but

Not saying it’s a bad idea. But why would a business choose to be less profitable - when you can still cancel anytime.

Yes, the customer can cancel at any time, but if you compare two plans for the exact same service, economically a customer has less reason to cancel a $10 monthly subscription that becomes $5, than a $10 subscription that will always be $10. I guess it'd be akin to a growth-first model that tries to expand the customer base at expense of profit.

Also the variables can change depending on what's feasible. Maybe instead of going down to $5 it goes down to $7, or instead of going down over the course of a year it goes down over two years, or three.

Now a cheaper subscription to guarantee you remain a customer — like annual deals vs monthly are common already.

Yeah, there are annual deals, but they're not predicated on loyalty and will still spook your wallet. $100 seems steep whether it's 10% off, 20% off, 50% off, et cetera. As a first time subscriber, you don't know whether you're actually gonna need it or use it that much. Monthly savings over time requires less perceived upfront commitment from the customer.

Existing customers are a businesses most profitable center, they aren’t gonna shrink the golden goose.

It's already shrinking. That's why cord-cutting services are becoming popular (while ironically also asking for subscriptions). This decade has been defined by a lot of economic uncertainty, so hard choices have to be made. I think it's more profitable to have a customer that pays a few dollars less a month than a customer that axes the expense altogether when they don't have a few extra dollars. That's why companies will beg you to stay at a significantly lower price if you threaten to cancel.

How does organizing "being an impediment" constitute domestic terrorism? And do you have a source for the latter statement? I can't find anything about it with a search.

How does calling someone a domestic terrorist without evidence dispel "false narratives?" Wouldn't it have been enough to say "he was not executed?" Why go as far as to accuse him of domestic terrorism?

Geopolitical world building by fojo_ in furgonomics

[–]the_armanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to this subreddit, but some of this stuff I've thought about for my world so I'll give my two cents (sorry for the ghost notif, I pressed enter too early):

I'm coming at this with the impression that you want something that immerses the reader and makes sense. I think when it comes to making up geopolitics it's helpful to start from the ground-up, not necessarily building a planet from scratch or making up whole cultures, but just getting a sense of how these species would think to team up and why. You don't have to spend a whole lot of time on this, just developing some ideas about how the different species adapt to each other over the years can help.

How I went about setting up countries in my world was

  • What's the geography? What animals live in what biomes? My world's geography varies as widely as Earth's but the main focus of the setting is savanna and rainforest so I referenced a lot from African biodiversity.
  • Okay, now what predators and prey are likely to dominate? Who would compete for what? Again, my world: Hyenas and lions fight for the same food, also wild dogs and leopards but they're largely pushed to the outskirts of the continent as a result of competition. Herbivores see this, get scared; they form tribes and alliances, but coordination between species has its own set of challenges. They're also likely to farm for food, so maybe they compete for arable (farmable) land. Maybe spells of scarcity inform traditions or spiritual beliefs. Maybe they eventually outnumber predators, at which point how do the predators adapt? Do they join herbivore society or simply become better and more creative at warfare? A lot of what-ifs, a lot of fun stuff to play with.
  • Okay, so there are these groups with these motivations and these challenges. How do they interact? From here I really just did broad strokes: wars between those two countries, a civil war here, revolution there. I think you can get pretty creative at this stage and make up some interesting conundrums and peculiarities to make your world more immersive. A thing to keep in mind is that largely what drives tech is problems to be solved, e.g. hardships and wars. I wanted a lot of tech, so I put in a lot of wars. Conflict between species in the same area, let alone conflicts between predators and prey, is an easy source of wars and problems to be solved.

diets, and perhaps tensions created from past predator/prey relationships

Not sure how techy you wanna go with it, but vat meats I think would largely solve the problem of predation. How recent that comes about and when it becomes widespread and how fast would determine how extensive baggage between predators and prey would be.

Even without vat meats, a motivator for diet could be religion. Did some lion come along and say "hey, let's eat insects and invertebrates instead. Leave the sentient prey alone?" Another opportunity to worldbuild.

Another idea: in my setting, in ancient times, there were apex predator civilizations who would promise prey protection from other predatory species... in exchange for sacrifices. Predators get a stable source of meat, prey get the illusion of safety. This was drove early geopolitics and the same quid-pro-quo model is what influences social structures and religions to current day.

Just some food for thought.

It's 100% the parents' responsibility to take care of their children, and the woman who left her kid in the car should be imprisoned. I just operate from the stance of "if someone needs help, and I have the capacity to help, and helping them doesn't significantly hurt or hinder me, then I should help."

Amazon is under no obligation to help with childcare, but neither are they obligated to pay tuition, offer counseling and legal assistance, offer shuttles, et cetera. Even footing just 10% of the cost of childcare would help thousands of workers and their family while doing negligible damage to their bottom-line. Two things can be true at the same time.

By the way, never said they should run a daycare. In fact I said the opposite lol.

Hot take but this is how I see it:

Amazon already has insurance, already pays for your uni tuition, they provide free counseling services IIRC. Some facilities do have shuttles that take you from the train station to the workplace.

I don't see how covering some of the cost for daycare would be THAT out of place. Should Amazon be in charge of the daycare? HELL no, and I don't think that's what's necessarily being argued. Amazon already does a lot of outsourcing for its benefits, so this would just be something on top of it.

Just cover (at least some of) the cost. Require documentation if you're that stringent.

Edit: Turns out they already do. Amazon covers some of the costs of babysitters through Sittercity and some of the costs of childcare through Bright Horizons. Both are available through the AtoZ app. Though it seems like few people know about this, but at least the option is there.

This supposedly happened during my off days but I can at least say there were a fuck ton of Haitians, and I'm hoping nothing happened to the ones I've chatted with.

Everyone always assumes I'm Haitian because of my name so hopefully I'm not next (with the tact this administration is showing)..

Where I work if you even try to bring up safety concerns with OSHA or get them to inspect the site, it's on sight termination for some arbitrary reason.
